I play at a standard where most of the time we all take in turn to umpire (10 overs each). I absolutely hate umpiring. My team is a very social team and we are all mates but we are very competitive (2 promotiona in 2 seasons). The last thing i want to do is give one of my mates out. there has been a couple of occasions where if i were a neutral umpire i would be more temted to give it out. There was an occasion last season when we had to score 20 runs with 1 wicket left. I was umpire. every time it hit the pads, all their players were appealing. There were some very close calls, but i couldnt give my mate out and that meant us losing the game? We won the game and i still feel my decisions might have been biased but they were not PLUM lbw. But i dont want to be in those positions, i want to play not officiate.
I would happily pay extra tea money each week if it meant us having umpires. I open the batting and i have had a very good season and luckily havent had to umpire too many times.
With my succesful season i am tempted to move to a higher division and the silver lining would not having to umpire. The only problem is moving clubs is that i have some good friends at my club and i do enjoy playing there.
What does everyone think? I know i just have to get on with it but that is just the way i feel.
-
I hate umpiring but if I believe something is out I'd still give it. The only time I haven't given a plum LBW is when we had 5 wickets left and needed 2 runs and I couldn't be bothered to wait for a new batsman to come in. Some horrendous LBWs are given at club level and I try not to given anything unless I'm absolutely certain it's out.
-
Do the scoring instead of umpiring ;) best way!!
In all fairness we have club umpires normally in our league and those are from the teams and not neutral. You'll always get umpires who are 'biased' shall we put it politely, towards the team that they umpire for. Unless you have completely neutral league umpires.
Nothing worse than getting triggered when you get hit on he thigh pad, or when you get a huge inside edge
-
I take pride on giving out my friends! They deserve it for batting higher up the order than me....the more I give out the more chance I get of having a bat! :D
-
I know what you mean, there is always one umpire who doesn't give anything and its because the batsman is his mate.
But I played one game where the umpire is one of the under 18s from the oppositions club and we seemed to get every close call and they got nothing.
To be fair though our bowling that day was on form and the only controversial one was the opposing captains LBW. It was plum but he moved his leg out of line after being hit, moaned a bit then walked off.
-
I genuinely don't have time to think! I just do it instinctively - though my judgement (and hearing) is terrible apparently!
-
I actually dont mind a bit of umpiring espically when a few of out better colts juniors are batting as it gives me an opportunity to watch what we have tried to coach over the winter or nets etc. I also enjoy doing my part on a sunday.
Luckily the standard i play we have panel umpires on a saturday so don't really get to many dodgy decisions, actually hardly get any as the umpires are all normally senior in age and a lot used to be batsmen so never think a LBW is out.
On a sunday i wouldn't say i enjoy giving a mate out but i would hate it far more if i knew i had cheated another player or team out of a wicket. I think a lot of the time you know instinctly if its out or not and you just have to give it if you have to.
I also like staying silent to the big gobby opening bowler when they appeal for the most stupid of appeals and they look at you like you must be blind to have not given it out even though it would have missed a third leg stump lol
-
I gave two lbws against team mates on the weekend. Sure they were pissed off at me, but I it's out it's out....team mates or not. Nothing worse than playing a team who will never give their own players out, just gives the entire team a really bad name
-
If I think it's out, I will give it out
-
If i think its out then I do give it out...I try to be fair as I know one of these days I could be the bowler or batsman....only time i dont give someone out is if I can't see it, i.e. the bowler has run directly in front of me, which i usually warn the bowler and let him know that he is running on the pitch...
-
I couldn't think of anything worse than approaching umpiring with any favouritism. It just goes against everything I play the game for!
-
It just goes against everything I play the game for!
I agree with this. I also play the game for a good laugh and trying to hit that dam piece of leather as hard as I can, but it always goes on the edges and into the keepers hands.
My team mates always give me out and dam right they should as I was walking anyways.
But lucky for me, ive not been around long enough for an LBW.
-
If its out its out.. simple
-
If it's out, i'll give it.
*confession time* i have given a mate not out once before when he was on 49 as he'd never scored a 50. It was taking out middle and leg. I knew how much it would mean to him so i couldn't bring myself to do it. Especially as we only needed 2 runs to win and had 6 wickets in hand
-
If its out you have to give it - by not giving decisions when you think they are out is basically cheating, and that is not the way to play the game...
-
You have no business umpiring the great game if you are going to cheat.
I don't like giving teammates out, but its part of the game.
-
I absolutely hate scoring so go out and umpire. If your out your out, simples!!!
-
fairly sure some of our youngsters go the other way and are more likely to give their mates out...
-

Do you guys still use manual scoring sheets? we use the ipad/ipod version of total cricket scorer...once you learn how to setup teams etc its really easy to use and you can see graphs etc while scoring makes it a lot of fun :)
-
I take the usual process! And if I have gone through everything (including left handed bowlers/line of run in, etc) and then the obvious height, turn, distance hit from wicket, etc, etc! and if I can't find any doubt, then the finger goes up! Their team, my team, who cares! If it's out then I would hate to cheat! After all, there is no point in 'winning' a match when you know that you should have given out to a couple of your players! Then it becomes a farse!
-
I remember a match when the opposition 'won' the match and their best batsman knicked one the the keeper and their umpire (the other teams captain) didn't hear a thing! The rest of their team at the boundary heard the knick so maybe he had a hearing problem!! :(
Then their next best batsman was absolute plumb LBW taking a step back to the stumps, dead in front and squared up, and got hit on the ankle from a ball that stayed low! The ;umpire' reckons that the batsman was too far down the wicket to tell! >:(
By that time, the game had turned a little nasty and it made the game not enjoyable! I (for one) avoided shaking hands with the captain and the guy who knicked it, making my feeleings obvious!
-

Opposition tend to try and pressure young umpires into making decisions. I find it's sometimes the case that a decision which should've been not out are given because the umpire feels pressured into giving it.

Unfortunately you do see quite a bit of that, to the extent that it is very obvious that there are far more appeals when youngsters are umpiring than when they are not.
I think that we are mainly talking LBW here, and the one that used to grate with me, Re: do you give your mates out? Was that if you weren't one of 'the mates' you were in increased danger of a dodgy LBW, simply to keep the stats up and make them look even handed!
-
In tour game a few years ago, one of our players gave another out to a ridiculous LBW. The guy umpiring knew he was on 49 - which may have influenced his decision.
Unfortunately the bat didnt take it in good jest, and the 2 ended scuffling on the pitch. One of the oppo players was dutch player van Troost - pretty sure he hadnt seen anything like it before.
-
Easiest way to avoid umpiring - stay in! Don't mind umpiring, any opportunity to trigger my team mates lol. Seriously, if it's out it's out. Benefit of the doubt is fair enough if you are the same for both sides.
I've seen so much cheating in the Wetherby League, we once went 6 games without an LBW because oppo teams wanted to beat us by any means possible. It turns the game into a farce and cheats win.
Umpires in the Wetherby aren't any better. Get £30 a game to moan like hell and give shocking decisions. More than once last season both teams agreed they could do a better job!
-
I remember playing in a work league and there umpire didnt give any wides, when there were practically on another wicket.
Our Captain (my boss) just told him to get off the wicket and get someone else out to umpire who wont cheat.
-
Mistakes will happen, but I've always maintained the philosophy that an umpire only gets a chance to make a mistake once a batsman makes several. You get hit on the pad near the stumps instead of using the bat or go swinging and missing outside off..... Any mistake the umpire makes is on you. You wont get lbw hitting it though midwicket or caught behind pushing it through cover.
I think its important to walk when your mate is umpiring too.... If you don't walk, its your mate who will wear it for cheating.
-
Got triggered this year by our mate in a crunch game, right arm round to a right hander, pitched half a mile outside leg and hit me in the crown jewels. Safe to say we didn't chat much after the game but that's cricket.
Firm believer that if it's out, then you go. I don't care if it's your brother standing at the other end. Rules are rules eh boys?
-
I remember getting triggered by one of our umpires the one time when the ball went clean through 'the gate' and I swear it touched absolutely nothing, not bat or pad (so you can see my technical deficiencies straight away!). Anyway, there was a noise, the keeper pouched it, there was an appeal and I was gone. I asked the ump about it after the game and he said 'you were plumb LBW'. However, the keeper was equally convinced that he had taken a catch. What I actually think happened was that the ball tickled the stumps without knocking the bails off, hence the noise. I think it was also down as caught in the scorebook. TBH I wasn't too dischuffed (well maybe a bit) these things do happen, and when you've got to go, you've got to go.

funny you should mention it because I gave my brother out playing no shot. It was at Buckingham and there was a slope on the track running downhill towards the off side. A few nipped away down the slope so he thought he would be clever and leave the next one. Only for it to come back up the hill and hit him in front of all three. Don't think he spoke to me for a week lol
-
I think some LBW's are a hard call for a player umpiring a game, unless it is really plum, stepping back across the stumps.
But most of the other descisions are easier, but there will always be cheats wides not being given to their bowlers then later on giver when wickets are needed and overs running out
Batsmen nicking it then looking up at thier umpire for a decision? Ive said what you you looking at him for, get off
-
Yes, defiantly.
-
i dont do much umpiring but dont mind the odd bit. did a bit for our seconds this year as our game was rained off. benefit of the doubt to both sides, if its out its out. the opposition bought me a beer afterwards and said its nice to see someone fair for both teams. they felt they should have got a couple of lbw's but then also said they felt one or two of their guys were out so it ended up fair. probably the same in most games. I dont get enjoyment out of cheating to win and i hate it when you end up on the wrong side of a decision/game. friends or family members it doesnt matter. if your out ill give you.
our club umpire is useless. we really believe his main aim is to make friends with the opposition and then give them a few decisions. he costs us more games than he wins us. its an embarassment at times. how he ever got a qualification is beyond me
-
If its out then I give out. When I umpire at square leg, I often interact with opposition team fielders and we always have amicable chat. So when its not out and I give not out they complain to me, and its other way when its out.
lol
-
Only if there is no reason not to
-
It's a bit difficult if you are only an occasional ump. As an example, unless it is an absolutely massively obvious 'boomer' I do have a tendency to 'give' a new bowler his first wide if it is a bit of a close call, mainly because I have to have a bit of a re-run mentally as to where he actually pitched it etc., and naturally how wide it was. Then again, I do play at a very low level.
-
Its easy to say "if its out its out" but over the last year or so I have started to move slightly from that position simply because I get sick and tired of playing for an hones team against dishonest ones. This year I reckon we conceded over a thousand runs in league cricket to batsmen after they were indisputably out - one game we lost after the oppos only bat was given not out to the plumbest LBW shout you'd ever see (hit on the toe by a yorker behind the crease line in line with off stump) and went on to score an extra 98, the week before we kept a side to 165-9 off 52 but they had one lad score 92* - despite being caught behind, caught at slip (seriously) and run out twice...
...makes you see where those cyclists who thought everyone was at it were coming from!
-
I try and be as honest as I can. I love cricket for the 'spirit of cricket' as well as the game. I have not been playing long but in the 3 seasons I have been playing I can already see general standards dropping in terms of 'cheating' in the game. Whether that be batsmen not walking (which of course some believe rightly or wrongly to be justified), umpires not giving run outs or LBW's OR of course giving people out when they are not etc. Add to the that level of 'sledging' that is around now. Now I'm not on about the light hearted general banter but when it's directed on personal stuff it's a bit off. Again, some think that being personal is acceptable and 'part of the game' but for me it's not.
The 5 teams that have personally 'sledged' me have come to rue it though as it pee's me off and then I just don't get out. won all 5 games from losing positions purely on the back of my innings.
Yes play hard, yes be competitive etc. But at the end of the day 99% of us no matter if you play ECB prem or lowest of the low have to fork out your own cash to buy kit, pay membership, tea fees etc etc. Accept we are are no Flintoffs or Cooks and just enjoy playing the game. Remembering the oppo's are also there to enjoy the game. You cheating really does ruin it for oppo's AND the good guys in your team (because if you are a true sportsman you won't want to win a game if your team cheat).. Again, some people think winning no matter what is the key so don't care.
Still.. each to their own. I expect umpire type cheating to continue AND I expect to see more clubs going with the view 'they won't give us anything so don't give them anything'. Board umpires are a mixed bag.. some are really good, some are really bad. Luck of the draw.
-
I think there is a lot of the`don`t give much as you don't get much philosophy., but then again, our neutrals give worse decisions (both ways).
On the odd time I umpire, I explain at the beginning that if there's any doubt, it`ll be not out. I tend not to give LBWs unless they're hitting middle.
It is a no win position, even if you are truly fair, you will always make mistakes and then you are classed as `playing favourites.
-
I don't mind going out to do my share of umpiring, but I prefer to get behind the book and score. But I will give an appeal out if it is out, regardless of batsman or opposition.
One of my past captains used to tell us to walk if we knew we've edged to the keeper, rather than put the pressure on a teammate to give the decision. I don't think many teams take that line because I've played against some who have blatantly cheated in not giving a caught behind or plum lbw. Nothing worse, especially as a bowler.
I also have a good grasp on the laws, and again you just can't say that about every opponent. Some are absolutely clueless. Just got to go with it. Sadly some of the paid umpires aren't much better!
-
Playing last year quite a few times the opposition players were plumb lbw's but their guys never gave them out, and yet when it came to us batting one of our players gave 3 guys out caught down the leg side needless to say there were some very angry faces in our changing room at the end of the game but we got a draw out of it.
-
I do a fair bit of umpiring as a bowler. My usual attitude is to look for a reason why it wouldnt be out and if I cant find one its out. I hate being out there for more than 10 overs, but love it when its close or if someone is batting well! That doesnt happen much for my side though!
I once gave a team mate out for a plum LBW, then when I went into bat, he promised me he would give me out the first chance he got! Sure enough a ball smashed me in the ribs and without even an appeal from the oppo up went the finger!
I love umpiring for a while, as a bowler you can use it to see how the others use the pitch, which end you would like to bowl from and where the dodgy patches are.
-
Oh dear, that sounds pretty petty!
-
luckily we get board umpires or club umpires for most games so I would say there is literally only about 10 ish games a year when I may have to umpire. I just make sure I bat for long enough not to be asked :), doesn't always work though. I tend to only umpire if some young lads are out there and there is some arsey oppo's who are trying ot pick on them a bit. I'll go out and then just talk to them while they are batting, usually helps them ignore the oppo's then and not just slog.
Board umpires are not always the best though as people have said. Quite a few give decisions by numbers.. some give every appeal.. The best one I've found (Ron Groenland) is awesome, everyone says so as well. He literally will only give an LBW if it's pretty much plumb. I think if everyone applied that rule everyone would be happy as we'd all know where we stand.
I can only remember one dodgy decision this year. First team game, on 40 and going really well.. Right arm around bowls.. pitches outside leg, hits the top of my front pad... Triggered. The only thing I did was smile and ask 'YOu sure it wasn't pitching outside leg sir'.. Got a response of 'F off from the bowler' and nothing from the umpire. Nice game this cricket!
2011 season I got 3 shocking LBW's from board umpires which considering it was my first year as a batsmen and my first 3 games for the firsts really didn't help my confidence. Still, I have to say I now just try and never let it hit my pads, try and give them no reason to trigger you. I literally expect to be triggered, as sad as it is.
-
Is it sad that I know who will not give me out when im batting? For example one player will literally ask me for my thoughts on if im out or not! A shake of the head n he shouts not out!
-
im my team from last season playing in the 2nd and 3rds there were lots of young lads, me, and 2 maybe 3 adults. now we had some very promising talent but the Capitan (not a fan of his) was NEVER out all the time and when he would be sent packing he would go mad, i mean mental! now some of these lads (and lasses) are 13? 14 maybe? how can a adult man going mental help them in the slightest? im not saying every decision was wrong but it was pretty much 50/50 over the season of right and wrong.
Lucky for me when i was needed for the 2nds i would go out and do square leg and chat with the other umpire to learn the trade so to speak.
-
All the rage at the moment - last season I called a dead ball because the bowler knocked the bails off in his follow through. Our skipper told me that it wasn't a dead ball - my excuse was that I don't know all of the rules (and if he wanted someone else to umpire I would happily relinquish the coat of shame). As to the rules - he was correct I think - ah, but you see, where I lead, others follow! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
-
we normally only have officials but with games when we don't yes i have given mates only if i was a 100% sure and it was overly obvious.. otherwise.. im a real bad ump!
-
I take pride on giving out my friends! They deserve it for batting higher up the order than me....the more I give out the more chance I get of having a bat! :D
Thats quality! :D
-
I hate having to umpire in the league, and never give an LBW unless the batsman has committed "back foot suicide" as we call it.
On Sundays I personally don't want to ruin peoples day so never give any LBWs (only being a friendly). Have a mate however who's finger is up before the bowler has released the ball, he loves watching us walk back to the pavilion after a poor decision, especially if he scored more runs than us!
???? Sounds like a t****r
-
He gets told it too regularly, with my batting ability I'm never too bothered when he gives me LBW off a forward defensive, we've usually lost by the time I have to get my pads on anyway.
haha, fair one. Bit selfish of him but I bet he's not the only one.
-
I have league umpires

yeah a fair few of us do fella, only problem is they are fairly regularly as bad or worse for triggering people! :)
-
im taking a risk this season, using a bb lam
-
Ive given my old man out on a sunday, LBW. Id been put in down the order a bit so had to umpire. I jokingly said i would give LBW so I could get a bat.
I gave 2 LBWs, one to a rubbish batsman and then my Dad. They were both pretty plum though, back leg so didnt really have a choice.
I came in and scored the winning runs with a classy 9* 8)
