Title: Matt Prior unsponsored
Post by: Colesy on October 30, 2012, 04:59:10 PM
Couple of tweets from the big man:

Matt Prior ‏@MattPrior13
“@olliepope1015: @MattPrior13 what's your new sponsor?” Free agent at the minute so blank bats for this series. Will keep u all posted.

Matt Prior ‏@MattPrior13
“@JordanOwen89: I wonder why @MattPrior13 was wk in SS gloves today” not with Slazenger anymore & someone is designing my own gloves for me

Who do we think he'll sign with? (I'm going GN) Big loss to Slazenger I think.

Yeah I noticed he was wearing SS gloves when I saw some pics on cricinfo earlier.

I heard Vantage were designing some new WK gloves!

haha, that would be nice to get a player like him on board!

Kook could be in the market too as I believe wade rather than Haddin picked for aus.

Other possibles I suppose SS or Puma?

Glad I got a reply from that tweet, I personally think he's going to use Puma or GN. Don't think I've ever got so many mentions off of a single tweet before though

Somewhat surprising seeing as he was the main man using the retro range not too long ago as Paul will vouch for after his personal grip delivery service.

Do you think that Bairstow is taking priority for Slazenger now he's got his foot in the door for 1 day T20 formats?

I think so, I saw something yesterday where he was getting some promo photos taken for Slaz in the retro range.

Shame about the black grips (as I was told he would be using them on the India tour), but selfishly, I'm more concerned about who will be using the V12 now.  We have several on the way, and at that price, we could do with a big name player using them!

I hope he goes to GN as I agree about the comments on Strauss.  I also feel they need an England player to use the Maverick, so that's where I'd put my money...

Thats a strange one. Do you think someone will get in before the 1st test?

I think I should tweet him to ask for one of his old V12's could do with an extra bat to use.

So Slaz used him for product promotion and dumped him after that.

Who was the dumpee and the dumper here? That's what I want to know! This has come as a complete shock to me, and I know their Ultimate wicket keeping gloves are very much inspired by his feedback, as well as all the product promotion stuff - he's pretty much been the face of the brand in recent months, so I'd be intrigued to know what the actual reason is - can anyone shed any light on this?
Title: Re: Matt Prior unsponsored
Post by: Tom on October 30, 2012, 07:26:13 PM
Strikes me as something very hasty, Prior hasn't had time to find a new sponsor and I can't see Slazenger having him as the face of the V12 if they knew he was going to leave.

Have put the question on Twitter out to his agent, Luke Sutton.

Lets not kid ourselves here though, it will be about money. That's what it's all about these days.......

Going to India unsponsored is hardly the worst move in the world with the financial power that some of their brands have......I'm sure someone will stump up the required cash sooner rather than later...

Yeah I'm backing SS too, out in India I'm sure he'll have the chance to go to the factories and take a great pick of their kit + the quality v12's he'll get stickered up
Title: Re: Matt Prior unsponsored

A substantial wedge for a full England international who doubles up on coverage as he has the gloves/pads on when keeping and is a middle order batsmen too so you get the double whammy of kit coverage!

Probably in the £100k ball park.

"not with Slazenger anymore & someone is designing my own gloves for me"

From that comment, I'd lean towards Spartan getting him but could also be SS as they also do own ranges for players.

100 k is a huge amount for any size company in the uk ,that's a fair amount of bats to sell, ss must be the biggest company in the world ? Do they pay less tax/rates in India ?

Not sure that Newbery sponsor mate! They do make bats for the international players though! :)

Do Adidas sponsor a keeper? I'm thinking they might offer him sponsorship, but they already have Tendulkar and KP on board, which I reckon is more than enough to keep the sales going!

Pietersen was reported to be on £200k+ though by the Telegraph/Times 4 yrs ago. Clarkes was reported as in the high-six figures (AUD) for his 3yr deal, plus he has stock in Spartan.

Was told 95k bats sold a year under SS branding in India, and can sell at a higher margin than any UK manufacturer (as they make in india)

They also get a government kickback on exports.

Yes all SS you can see the ton stamp on his bat. His keeping and batting gloves look quite nice. I think they are his new sponsor as if he was a free agent surely he'd just have his Slazenger softs with a blank V12?

But in this photo the SS branding on the gloves is covered up?

Personally I'd like to see him at Puma or Gray Nicolls.
England do now have Compton in the side so that fills the space Strauss left at Gray Nicolls.
Title: Re: Matt Prior unsponsored
Post by: petehosk on November 01, 2012, 09:42:12 AM
England may have Compton, but that's on a trial basis at the moment!
And with a big fat duck to his name currently, then he may not be staying long.
If he gets another low score then he'll be in danger. Also if they play Root next match to try him out, and Root scores well then he'll be in danger again! So Compton only has his little toe in the door at the moment! He'll need runs to get his foot in!  ;)

Not sure about GM for Prior, maybe they should just let Samit Patel fly their flag now, and give him a bit of a push instead.  Based on current form, there's absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be a regular on this tour.  Nice to see him using the Argon too!

I'd imagine many costs are lower in India; labour and property being the main two. Possibly, Health and Safety and environmental obligations are not be so onerous. Also their volume of production will help bring economies of scale.

completley off the wall to this discussion I know, but one day, just for once, i'd like to see a top pro use one of the small brands and when charles coaville/nasser/knighty asks them post match(after a big ton):

''the viewers might be interested in your bat sponsor matt/cookie/trotty,they are not so well know, why are you using their bats out of interest?''

I agree - if they were being paid £250k a year, it would be fantastic of they used a brand like SAF, Redback or Kicking Horse for free.

However, could the small brand then cope with the potential demand they would receive, and would that change everything?

Also, I don't think there are any International players using Newbery with Newbery stickers are there?

fair point fattus cattus, I suppose the smaller brands may not be able to cope if 500 people emailed in wanting at H4L or SAF/any other....
dont know of any international players using Newbery (with stickers) the most recent pro's are dominick cork(retired i know) van jarsveld of Kent and Murrey Goodwin(glam now I think)
Prior's deal with Slaz must of expired or he could'nt agree sponsorship with them.
It's unusual to see a pro without a sponsor these days, remember watching Micheal Clarke get 300 with an unstickered bat and then get a huge deal with Spartan.
I'm sure some players have favourite bat-makers they stick with, did hear on the grapevine the fussiest was Rob Key who had been using the same batmakers for years.I was also at a Dinner in Middlesex when Ramps was the speaking(he was great) and he said it is true he had 100 bats in his house-all virtually identical in weight and pick up.
