Extremely sad day for cricket. Simply a legendary batsman, would be extremely hard to replace him.
He will be surely missed, he was a blessing to cricket! A remarkable and sensational batsman.
-
Yep sad day for Australian cricket! Such a great player over the years! Will be missed even though he hasn't been scoring many runs of late still be hard to say goodbye and replace him!

Concur your statement. A wistful statement by Ponting at press conference. Showed how he considerate he was, there are often players who are not contributing much to team's deficit and they are still playing which is quite embarrassing for a player who has played thus long.
-
Always was, and forever will be, a legend in my eyes. I'm going tomorrow, so I really hope we win the toss and I get to see him bat for Australia in the flesh one final time. Saw him score a century on Boxing Day in 2008 - reckon I would lose it if he did that tomorrow.

A link that shows the press conference...poor Clarke holding back tears!
-
Legend of Australian and World cricket.
He sighted non performance as the reason for him stepping down, so what are the chances of him getting a big hundred, or centuries in both innings? Which then sets up Australia for the series win and to reclaim the number 1 test ranking. Now that would be a way to go out.
-
I will be honest here, at times I did detest Ricky Ponting guts but I always admired his batting. He was treat to watch.
Not lying but his announcement of retirement certainly made me emotional, it always saddens me and hurts me when I see such a great player leave the game.

Cheers for that, top lad is Clarke. Have heap of respect for him!
-
It's not the full press conference obviously...it would be great to see him bow out with a ton...either way will be an emotional test!
-
truly a sad day Ricky will be missed. Go out on a high.

the player who has played in more test wins than any other.
absolutely awesome player. I wouldn't put one last hundred past him.
-
Sachin should take note of this, a true cricket legend.
His impact on Clarke as a cricketer and a man shows in his reaction to the news.
Hope he gets a good send off and it should hide the fact the Aussies have picked a whole different pace attack from the previous test haha
-
An absolute legend of the game, whether you love him or hate him, I actually hope he gets one last ton before he goes and I wouldn't be surprised if he does!
-
Is now a bad time to remind people that most of us (the English at least) have a Ponting T-Shirt with the legend "never trust a man whose eyes are too close together"?
No, seriously - for all Ponting has had a love/hate relationship with English fans, you have to respect his ability to shape and define a series (at least until he began to slip eighteenmonths/two years ago).
-
any one else think it is amusing that George bush was the 41st us president, ponting was the 42nd Aus skipper and George bush II was the 43rd us president?
-
Sad to see him go. I always worried when Hayden or Langer got out, as Ponting would usually come in and score a bucketload. Congratulations on a brilliant career and good luck in the future!
-
Wonder whether he'll get one last pay day as an overseas player in county cricket next summer?
-
I will be forever surrounded by Bush is one statement Bill Clinton released with pride
The only Australian captain to lose 3 Ashes series.
Hopefully there is time for one final rendition of 'Don't look back to Ponting' somewhere someday to say goodbye properly
-

Zummerzet, perchance?
-
Clarke is a great PR man.
Farewell Ricky. That knock at Old Trafford in 2005 was amazing, how crushed he was after getting out was almost as poignant as the Lee/Flintoff handshake.
-
I read this morning I think it was Hayden who said that Ponting wasn't appreciated in England as he was booed.
I think he was Boo'ed as everyone knew what a danger he was.
Ponting is a legend of the game and has done great things over the years, none more than the 2005 Ashes thank you for that Ricky.
-
Ponting was booed in England because he was a knob, it was nothing to do with his ability or lack of it! Everyone knows what a great player he is! It was the rest of the stuff that went with him that people disliked. The constant whining and whingeing, the questioning of umpires decisions and the complete lack of any humility. He just isn't a likeable person. Great player but , like Hayden, not a particularly nice guy.......on the field at least.

Completely agree. His behaviour towards umpires has been a disgrace at times, even after he handed over the captaincy I can remember him pointing his finger at the umpire and trying to run the game himself. I have enjoyed seeing England win 3 Ashes series in recent times but I have enjoyed seeing Ricky Ponting lose them just as much

Give it a rest guys - from the last 2 comments.
Haven't you heard of the term whinging poms - thats exactly what you are doing.
Give the guy a break, he is a legend of the game and needs some respect. Only if the english had a player of his calibre..........

Bumble seemed to suggest so on Twitter earlier.
Great player - Aussies on here -who replaces him? Khawaja?

He was the ultimate competitor, no champion likes to loose, thats why they have got to where they are.
Did you watch the video you sent - Warney summed it up and the tag line of the youtube clip is spot on.......
Give the guy some credit...... He is a legend in our life time, not a "legend in their own lunchtime" like most people are......

Bradman was a knob as well but that doesn't preclude him from being a great of the game. No one has said Ponting isn't a great player. A legend of the game? Well, maybe, but only in the same way that Schumacher is a legend of F1. His legacy will always be tainted by the antics he got up to on the circuit as Pontings will be by his behaviour on the field. As for the whingeing...you're going to have to try harder than that. It's just a go-to little chirp the aussies use when they can't think of anything else to say.......
-
Is it sad that my abiding memories of Ponting will be the words "we'll have a bowl mate" and him completely losing his rag with Fletcher after the Gary Pratt run out!
-

Good from you, very much a great of the game but very much a bit of a dislikeable character!
-
The more I think about it Ponting and Schumacher's careers are quite similar. Both disliked by their peers for their antics but both supremely talented, both once working for the best team then moving to an average one and both extending their careers for too long!

Lets remember him for his talent;

I'd love him to play for a few years over here similar to what Langer did it Somerset.

every hot streak needs to come to an end - how many years was it ?
Anyway the upcoming back to back series in 2013 are shaping up as a pearler......
-
Great player
Hard as nails
He taught England a few things about how to win and the manner
Thank you for that but your time has come
Goodbye legend
-
Tendulkar's turn next, long overdue
Never liked Ponting, cos he was an aussie and abusive, but an outstanding player and competitor so got to respect him for that and a great career
-

Aye, they are - indeed, the closeness of standards between England, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and (at home) India together with an up and coming West Indies side means there is a lot of very good Test cricket to be played over the next couple of years. Every week seems to ebb and flow a bit in terms of how I read these series going...
At the moment, I make England favourites still; they have the stronger top order, keeper and spinners and a seam attack that is as good as Australia's strongest (and far more likely to actually turn up fit). Against that, Australia have a potentially excellent middle order if they get their next selectoral decisions right - as you'll see below there is a hole in their batting that Hughes, Khawaja, Marsh, Quiney, Smith and Forrrest have not looked comfortable filling and I am really not sure who will be the chosen man.
How would they line up? Possible as follows...
England - Cook, Root, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, Bairstow, Prior, Broad, Swann, Finn, Anderson with Compton, Bresnan, Meaker and Panesar in reserve
Australia - Warner, Cowan, The Mystery Man, Clarke, Watson, M Hussey, Wade, Siddle, Pattinson, Lyon, Hilfenhaus with Another Batsman, Cummings if fit, Starc and, if I were involved, Henriques
As for the much vaunted MM Combination XI, I don't think the following would attract much argument:
Alistair Cook
David Warner
Jonathan Trott
Kevin Pietersen
Michael Clarke
Shane Watson
Matt Prior
Graeme Swann
Peter Siddle
Steven Finn
James Anderson
So 7-4 to England...
-
Haven't Somerset already signed Alviro P?
Give the guy some credit...... He is a legend in our life time, not a "legend in their own lunchtime" like most people are......
He might be a legend in Australia but as you have found out there are mixed opinions elsewhere
His behaviour was, at times, appalling for a national captain. His batting and fielding undeniably brilliant
-
I think you'd have Hussey in there purely on current form, maybe Shunt Watson up to open and Ditch Warner ;)
-

Possibly, though I don't rate Watson as a batsman alone and he struggles to open, bowl and stay fit...

Well quoted...

As a captain of an international team he was a terrible role model. He regularly lost his temper on the field and was fined multiple times for showing open dissent towards the umpire - most memorably his ten minute on field rant at Aleem Dar in 10/11 Ashes. He was also famous for trying to get opposition captains to agree to accept a fielder's word on contentious catches even though his team was notorious for claiming blatant drops.
What do you think young cricketers out there who've seen his antics on the field (and are now witnessing the adulation he is receiving) will think is acceptable behaviour on the pitch?
-
Blimey MM you've dropped Compton already :o Cut-throat selection style not seen since the days of Illingworth!
From the combined XI, I would have to argue against Siddle, granted he's a tryer but so is my labrador. Pattinson if fit provides much more threat in my opinion
I am confident that England have a better team going into these Ashes series BUT if Australia get and keep Pattinson and Cummins fit they will have some genuine firepower for the first time in a while
-
Not sure if Trott would make it into a combined XI at the minute.
-
Compton - yes, I have. I just think that Root is going to be the man going forward.
Siddle - has done pretty well of late and would be a good enforcer for an attack fronted by Anderson and Finn.
Trott. Best of a bad pair, but has the advantage of a great record and the thought that anyonbe can struggle for a game or two.
-
Cowan
Warner
Watson
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Wade
Patterson
Siddle
Cummings (or Starc, if not fit)
Lyon
Granted the English have a more settled side, giving you the edge at the moment, but now that watson is back in the team and most likely Khawaja will come in for Ponting because he has an excellent technique required for the top order (and is in form), the team will play the next series together and gain some more momentum before the ashes - The best bowling team will win the ashes.
The key for Australia is getting them fit. Patterson, Siddle, Cummings will be a good combo.
Patterson for his sheer stump to stump venom with away swing, Siddle as the workhorse who wears his heart on his sleeve and Cummings as the x-factor (height, speed, swing), backed up by the under rated Lyon and Watto's partnership breakers, lets not forget about Clarke's ability to bowl.
Can't wait, its like watching a juicy T-Bone steak grilling on the BBQ - mouth watering..... I'll be there at Lords....
-
It's not just getting the bowlers fit, it's keeping them that way. All the aussie young guns seem to keep breaking down. Maybe it's too much too young...
-

Seems like its only a recent trend of the last year or 2
Your possible right or is it a case, "the kids of today are just not as tough as the kids of yesterday".
Most kids are consumed by xbox, ipods, etc and just don't do the physical exertion that past kids did - riding bikes, playing sport all day long, climbing trees, etc. When i was young, i had nothing but a bike, football and cricket bat and lived and breathed it - mum wouldn't see me all day.
I know in sport (as i coach juniors) everything is regulated and this breeds mediocrity and weaker sportsman - each kid gets rotated and there are limitations on how many overs one can bowl and how balls one can face before having to retire. This frustrates the better cricketers and keeps the weaker cricketers in the sport longer who deprive the best cricketers the opportunity to improve and excel. What happened to survival of the fittest and the pecking order in sport, where you had to earn your spot.
This make you tough, which in turns makes you stronger when you get into the senior ranks.
or do you think, that us parents are making our kids play too much sport too early because we all want the next Flintoff, Federer or Tendulkar..........
Now this is a discussion for the masses - will be interesting to see what people think.
Might be worth creating another thread for comments....
-

Agree! Not a fan of Warner at all, flat track bully, will get found out over here! Watson on the other hand is a top player! The current Aussie team is definitely 'getting there' the batting looks strong if they can find an extra couple of players. As for the bowling I have my doubts whether any of their seamers (other than Hilfy and Siddle) will actually stay fit long enough to make a difference. What is it with Aussie fast bowlers? So fragile! My own thought on it is that if the Aussie back room boys concentrated more on getting them to bowl within themselves and do something with the ball and less on getting them to bowl at light speed then they might find their bowlers last more than 2 tests in a row! I've seen so many 90+ Aussie bowlers recently who can't seem to last a session let alone a series. You'd think they might have noticed by now!
-

Your possible right or is it a case, "the kids of today are just not as tough as the kids of yesterday".
I'm really struggling to think of fast bowlers who haven't struggled with injuries throughout their careers. The only one who springs to mind is Styen (who I can't remember ever having a long lay off). But the vast majority have problems - just thinking of England quicks of recent years - Anderson (especially early in his career), Broad, Tremlett, Onions, Bresnan. The Aussies too: Johnson, Lee, Tait
With the playing schedule the way it is it's just something a modern professional fast bowler has to deal with.
-

Like :)
-
On the whinging that Punter did after the Gary Pratt run out, he was on Talk Sport today and spoke very highly of Ponting after the event. He received loads of memorabilia off Ponting a year or so later as a gesture.
So the 'he's a (No Swearing Please)' opinion isn't gospel I don't think.
-
Great player
Single handedly killed India's chances in the 2003 world cup final ...still remember those one handed sixes that he hit
Amazing fielder
Certainly one of Australia's best
It will be interesting if he comes back as a commentator and sits in he same box as gangly or Hussain :)
-
He may not be my cup of tea off the pitch, but my god was he a world class cricketer. People often took his fielding for granted but he's one of the best in that discipline and then there was his batting, even for an Aussie I loved watching him bat
-
This is quality - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/nov/30/joy-of-six-ricky-ponting
it includes a link to a video of Ricky Ponting's fielding - run outs only.
It lasts 55 mins!!!!

Ah Robelinda, I've watched his video of everyone of Mark Waugh's Test wickets.
I am a saddo.

The Aleem dar rant was a disgrace.
However, are you trying to tell me the English NEVER claim catches that bounced?
-
Sad to see Ricky go would have loved to have seen him in another ashes.
I respect him for his stand on asking players to be honest. as we all know tv pictures at one point were showing good catches as questionable when on tv replay so given n.o.
Also can see his point re Englands use of sub fielders within the rules, within the spirit of the game no.
I will miss him up there with tendulkar if not better IMO.

he should do the same analysis for batting first and shaping the game. also odis in India are usually played on roads. so there will be a statistical slant in sachin's favour.

What Benjamin Disraeli said.
Lara

An Indian doing a comparison with Tendulkar coming out on top - I didn't see that coming!

To be honest my favourite batsman is and will always ve viv, wasnt alive in his time but never get tired of watching old videos!

-
http://i3j3cricket.com/2012/05/29/whos-more-clutch-tendulkar-lara-or-ponting/
I have just read this and my conclusion very different.
I would say that BL and RP are match winners. There lower average on losing games shows that the teams needed there runs. But ST average which is closure to his winning average shows that he is not a match winner, but a score builder.
-
The truth is probably somewhere between the two - I think that averages are tough to take in context because they are not totally like-for-like. Tendulkar, like or not, has made a lot of easy runs on dead Indian wickets that distort his figures, just as Ponting's are arguably distorted by the sheer dominance of the Australian side in which he made most of his runs. Lara, meanwhile, has an average distorted by two huge scores on a shortfront...

Wonder if my all time favourite Brad Hodge will come out of retirement now...
Better test average than all 3 of them average players to boot :)
