As a captain of an international team he was a terrible role model. He regularly lost his temper on the field and was fined multiple times for showing open dissent towards the umpire - most memorably his ten minute on field rant at Aleem Dar in 10/11 Ashes. He was also famous for trying to get opposition captains to agree to accept a fielder's word on contentious catches even though his team was notorious for claiming blatant drops.

What do you think young cricketers out there who've seen his antics on the field (and are now witnessing the adulation he is receiving) will think is acceptable behaviour on the pitch?

The Aleem dar rant was a disgrace.

However, are you trying to tell me the English NEVER claim catches that bounced?

Sad to see Ricky go would have loved to have seen him in another ashes.

I respect him for his stand on asking players to be honest.  as we all know tv pictures at one point were showing good catches as questionable when on tv replay so given n.o.

Also can see his point re Englands use of sub fielders within the rules, within the spirit of the game no.

I will miss him up there with tendulkar if not better IMO.

he should do the same analysis for batting first and shaping the game. also odis in India are usually played on roads. so there will be a statistical slant in sachin's favour.

An Indian doing a comparison with Tendulkar coming out on top - I didn't see that coming!

I have just read this and my conclusion very different.

I would say that BL and RP are match winners. There lower average on losing games shows that the teams needed there runs. But ST average which is closure to his winning average shows that he is not a match winner, but a score builder.

The truth is probably somewhere between the two - I think that averages are tough to take in context because they are not totally like-for-like.  Tendulkar, like or not, has made a lot of easy runs on dead Indian wickets that distort his figures, just as Ponting's are arguably distorted by the sheer dominance of the Australian side in which he made most of his runs.  Lara, meanwhile, has an average distorted by two huge scores on a shortfront...

Wonder if my all time favourite Brad Hodge will come out of retirement now...

Better test average than all 3 of them average players to boot :)
