Title: Look what I made!
Post by: wilkie113 on December 23, 2012, 05:41:12 PM
Today I was bored, and had some fleece materials, and a sewing machine so went crazy making a few drawstring bags for my kit. It still needs a little work, and I'll be making them again, but they've gotten better after each one I've made.

First up was a bat sock, I've always wanted one since seeing laver ones, but I can't justify buying one. So I decided to make one!

Second up, a helmet bag! Masui and Ayrteks come with lovely bags, but poor old albions just get battered in the bag :(

Lastly was glove bag, I always rush around when padding up to get that glove that's escaped. Now there together :D! This bag's the best one I made, and I'm really happy with that one.

I'm definitely going to be making more of these bad boys after Christmas and experimenting with some different colours.

If anyone's interested in sets of these I'll be making more after christmas so drop me a PM

Comments please, good or bad, criticism is always welcome :)

Well my talent isn't in cricketing form ;)
So I might as well make so soft fluffy goods for you all to protect your kit in hadn't I :P!

Being serious you might have stumbled onto a gap in the market, annoys me when softs don't come with decent bags to keep them tidy in your kit bag. Maybe change the colours though......

Think its a great plan to keep kit safe as my mum used to make all of ours to start with in a similar method with her sewing machine....think after 300 odd she got fed up and I had to outsource the job!

See plenty of £200+ bats with stud marks and dents on them as they aren't kept in a bat cover or protective sleeve!

I can imagine mate!
It's not that I would get fed up lol, it would be how quickly I could do them. Obviously once you get into a cycle of making them it'll get quicker an quicker!

I made some for my gloves because the amount of times I've left a glove at home, or at the club is silly, and the ones they come in haven't got a very nice feel to them. Plus for the albion lids not having bags, aero strippers as well, and also with the new expensive stretton foxes, you need to protect your investments IMO.

Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: Johnny on December 27, 2012, 09:43:11 PM
And in keeping with one of my Christmas presents (a pair of TOMS) for every bat cover you sell you should give one away to a bat that really needs one
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: wilkie113 on December 27, 2012, 09:44:03 PM
The fleece I picked up today was far far thicker than the puzzle stuff I bought for my own.

Thicker than some bat covers I've had before, but I can certainly experiment with a double layer foam inserted bad boy bat cover!
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on December 27, 2012, 09:45:11 PM
Thicker with foam would be good for a bat cover, gives some protection for the bat as well whilst in transit.

+ a shoulder strap!
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on December 27, 2012, 09:47:35 PM
yep, and shoulder strap.

Do people not have Bat Caves anyway?? I do. Don't think I've actually carried a bat outside a bag.. well ever (in all 3 seasons :) )
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: wilkie113 on December 27, 2012, 09:48:24 PM
Trouble with adding the foam to it would be I'd have to use two pieces of fleece which is twice the fabric then the price of the foam as well.

I will certainly give this a go though!!

Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on December 27, 2012, 09:49:40 PM
nah, just one lot of fleece. some foam and then just some thin sheet type stuff on the inside.. something smooth so the bats glide in.. silk like
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: wilkie113 on December 27, 2012, 09:51:52 PM
Silk like?!

But yeah I get what you mean mate, the fleece on the outside then a lining material on the inside. I'll see what I can get

I should get some compensation for introducing everyone to the Red and Black range ;) A stroke a genius if I must say so myself!
Although I see Ayrtek stole the idea from my head then went back in time and did it themselves (Sneaky)

These are for Jake, but I'm debating making a few of the pink for myself. They look sweet!

If I keep liking all the colours myself I'm going to have a silly amount of bat socks and not enough bats!

Post by: ProCricketer1982 on January 03, 2013, 03:20:07 PM
Did someone say they need to buy more bats??? I'm sure there are more than enough around for you to buy up :)

Pink.. Uh oh, I won't mention that to the mrs. She loves the darn colour and I've had to get pink grips just to keep her happy :) (I like the pink Blueroom kit though so it's ok)

Cheers Graham. It was just something I had a look at in the material shop.
I may whip up a pad bag from it as well, see what they look like

Top stuff Tom, really like the glove socks. :) Are they soft though? ;)

Used my lid bag the other day, and have to say that it is worth every penny to buy one for a £200 lid! 8)
Title: Re: Look what I made!
Post by: gdb19 on January 30, 2013, 05:12:20 PM
Tom decided to add to his legendary collection of gloves and bought my ayrtek elites off me giving me some of his new softpocket stuff in exchange. It arrived today so thought I'd post some pics and review them, apologies for the rubbish quality of the pics but they're just done on an older iphone.

As a general comment all of these are really well made, I tugged a bit at the stitching to check and there's nothing loose or anything that looks like it'll rip. Being fleece they're obviously light and I'd guess you can probably wash them if you need to after sticking smelly kit in them. The fleece is also pretty thick too, quite a bit thicker than I expected so it should protect kit well in your bag. Its probably as protective as a traditional cover though I didn't get a bat cover so I can't compare to my existing GM ones.

First off the helmet cover:

You can't really see much from that but it fits my aytrek premier very well, its snug but not too tight so you can take it in and out easily. Its certainly better than the bag which came with the helmet (no offence Tom) and will protect it a lot more which given the cost of the lid makes it well worth it.

Next the pads bag:

Again, fits pretty well, only thing would be that thought it fits my regular mens pads fine it could do with being a little longer for anyone buying OSM pads as they might stick out of the end a bit. If you do buy one of these and use OSM I'd let Tom know so he can make it a little bigger. The second pic shows the new drawstring toggle that Tom has started to use and it works well, adds a little quality touch too which is nice. This toggle is also on all the other bags but I've not taken specific pics of it.

I've also got a fleece glove bag which fits my regular mens gloves really well and is similarly protective that I forgot to take a pic of, but my favourite of the stuff Tom sent me is this one:

Its thinner than the fleece and won't be as protective but for softs that should be fine. For me this looks better than the fleece and having holes in will ventilate your kit better. To me this looks like it should be far more expensive than what Tom is selling them for.

Overall I'm really impressed, I thought they'd be good as Tom is a good bloke and wouldn't sell any old rubbish - but to be honest they're better than I expected. Very well made and protective and I'd definitely recommend them.

Got a load of these coming!!! Very happy with Tom's contact so far. I think Tom should put a pittards style label on these as to differentiate from a random fleece bag. They are the latest must have!!!

Thank you for the review Graham greatly appreciated mate.

With the pad bag, I ask everyone what size pads they are so I can make them a little longer for OSM :).

Glad your happy with them.

When I was at school in the 60's and 70's (yes I'm old) we had something very similar called a 'pump bag'

For the uninitiated, a drawstring bag made normally out of old certain material that you carried your plimsols around in.

Who would have thought it would have evolved into what we see on this forum today :)

There are some talented chaps on here :)

Really love the design of the bat cover, and the other 2 are exactly what I asked for. Tom even ordered the white mesh material specifically for this. Top work as usual!

Have you made any small random kit bags before Tom? Just want a little bag to put tape, wax, etc. in as they disappear in my kit bag?

And I'm not surprised you wanted to keep it, it's awesome. Your covers are so much nicer looking than traditional bat covers!

Just a thought, could maybe be done with a zip? (The odds and sods bag not bat cover)

Collected my softpocket helmet bag from the post office today. Its absolutely brilliant, the quality of the bag is second to none. I'll be recommending to my team mates so you might get a few more orders coming your way Wilkie!
