Title: Visiting Newbery
Post by: ItsJustCricket on January 02, 2013, 02:14:52 PM
Just to let everyone know, I will be visiting Hove on Monday to hand pick our Newbery bats for 2013.

I have a pretty good idea of what to take, but there's still time for additions if necessary, so if anyone fancies a new Newbery bat for this season, please do get in touch with your desired specs, weights etc. and I'll do my best to match them whilst I'm there.

Apart from Jamal (mally777) who else fancies a new Newbery bat? I'm going to Hove on Monday to hand pick, and will gladly match anyone's requests on here and pick out some beauties for you!  :)

Yep but not the pro-grain one.  Mainly getting a token one so we can do a video review of it!

I'm interested in getting a Krakatoa SPS or if you can get a Tomahawk without the nasty stickers then one of those.

Ah damn, too late! I only picked out mjolnirs, thruxtons, GTs, a tomahawk and a tour (in SH). Only got krakatoas in junior size, sorry! Maybe the Tomahawk is worth a look though? It's a Players model and weighs 2lb 8.1oz...

I expect some reviews and pics soon... 8) Also a longer Thruxton review wouldn't hurt Paul! Hahahaha :D

Chad, that Tour absolutely has your name stamped all over it! But yes, that Thruxton review I did before was hideously bad, so I don't think it'll take much to deliver a better one for the new bats...

Really want to see those pictures of the Tomahawk. I get the impression it's Newbery's "Laver" shape.

Yes I did. The tour impressed me the most. One of the most booming ping noises I have ever heard! They all pinged well though. Only a couple that I thought were worse than good or 7/10, and I went through close to 100 before making my pics...

Chad, Jason did a review of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UHpGchMYa4  But you're right, I hadn't heard much about the Tour before the Lord's Trade Show and then Jason sold it to me in this vid! Is it just me, or is this one of Jason's best ever videos? He really seems into it...

By the end of the week.  I just think there's too much choice with Newbery - too many different bat models - and unless you're a huge retailer, you can't really stock them all.  We, especially, have to be very selective! Besides, I ended up taking nearly double the amount of bats that were on order anyway!

Most of the SPS bats looked no better than the Players, to be honest.  There was one 22-grain Thruxton SPS, but it weighed in at 2lb 12.5 so I wasn't convinced.  Again, we have to be very selective!

Fair enough, just didn't know if it was a deliberate move to avoid the top priced bats. I know the lower Newbery ranges are brilliant performers

Agree that they have too many bats, Krakatoa should be shelved as a senior bat and the Uzi has also had its day I think, a line up of - Tour, Mjolnir, Thruxton, TT, Tomahawk, GT is more than sufficient

Glad you say that, James, as that was exactly what I thought about the Krakatoa and Uzi! We will still stock the Krakatoa in junior, as you can see from the pics (it seems to be becoming more of a junior model with the bag and new bright and colourful softs to accompany it)...

By the way, the Tomahawk I picked taps up a lot better than it looks, and was picked more for that reason.  It also weighs 2lb 8.1oz...

Did you look at the bags when you was there Paul? If so what's your opinion on them?

I think the new bags are a real eyesore! I was told they'd generate a lot of attention in the shop, and I'm sure they would, but I don't really care about generating attention if they won't sell, and I haven't come across a single person who likes them! However, their tried and tested bags like the Test and Tour will always have a place on our shelves...

Do like the look of the Tour bag (the blue looks great) but for some reason I actually quite like the new TT bag.

Just question whether the Tour bag is too big.

Hopefully it doesn't sell straight away then Paul!

Yes I think they've made an effort to appeal more to kids, Newbery has always really been a mature cricketers choice for a few reasons but the Krakatoa graphics and the vandalised TT bags are certainly aimed at under 18s

The Tour bag looks lovely and is in my clubs colours but have heard mainly bad reviews about it so far. Can't go wrong with an SPS or Test, very well made bags

what do you make of the TT Bats - have you ever stocked them? For me, for a supposed 'biffing' bats, they always seem to have disappointingly small profiles.

I don't think he does, Ciaran, he's already got a beautiful shoulderless RK that pings very nicely indeed (I knocked it in for him so I know!)

I agree, they do look a bit small for this type of bat, and they compete directly with the Willostix Stick and Slugger (both of which are bigger), which I will always prefer...

My problem with the Willosticks slugger is just it just didnt seem to feel right in the hands! No ideas why!
Its actually Fattus's fault that I love shoulderless bats. He sold me one years ago he sells so many bats Im sure he wont rememeber but it is all his fault!

I will be backing up the fact that the Willostix slugger is a great bat, as my one weighs in at 2.12 which is the lightest that it comes I believe or I think that was the lightest slugger the Andy's had at the barn when I went last. it is absolutly massive as well but really well balanced, aspecialy because it has all the wood from the shoulder put into the middle; But even so it still picks up so, so well almost like a 2.9/2.10 and with the ball on the end of the handle they do feel great when using.

If u couldn't tell I'm a big fan

I think certain bats, such as the Uzi, have lost some of their appeal, but overall as a brand, I think they are still very strong.  We sold more Newbery SH bats last year than any other brand! Even more than Gray-Nicolls, Kookaburra etc.

Nice to see another Willostix fan on this forum!  :) Well, there are a few others, but still love hearing feedback like this.  Yes, 2.12 for a Slugger is the lightest they come in, and I agree, they do pick up a couple of ounces lighter than they actually are...

No doubting the quality of their bats and I'm sure this is still the case but I think they should stick to what the are good at and renowned for

The graffiti bag is part of a half-hearted attempt to break into the youth market. In my opinion kids want what they see their heros using and unless Newbery get a big name player on board and using their kit their recent attempts to become more 'popular' only cheapen the brand and will.never see them competing in that market against Adidas, GN and the other big guns

Hi mate, we have a 2.10 Mjolnir 5 Star, a 2.9 Mjolnir Player and a 2.10 Thruxton Player left.  Doing a video of the Thruxton tomorrow, so look out for that.  The Mjolnir 5 Star has a cameo appearance in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbpjP4iGTpo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbpjP4iGTpo)

We only have one bat left from what we took from our last Newbery visit, so I've arranged another trip to Hove tomorrow to pick some more bats.  As always, please let me know if anyone has any specific requirements, or a burning desire to get a new Newbery bat!  :)

I will be making my 3rd visit to Newbery on Sunday, in conjunction with the Sussex vs. Australia game that I have tickets for.

As always, if anyone is looking for a new Newbery bat, or has any special requests, please do get in touch.  There's normally some lovely willow to choose from down there! Newbery are also our biggest selling brand, which I don't think is a coincidence...

Paul,
Any tomahawks in the new stock?

I had a good look through them, despite not being my favourite Newbery bat.  In the end I decided not to take any, as although they had quite a few left, none really jumped out at me!

Regarding the C6 handles, sorry, I only read that post after I got back!
