Title: Test players playing club cricket.
Post by: potzy248 on February 06, 2013, 08:56:40 AM
Just wondering if anyone has played/plays against current test players?
Trent Boult (opening blower from NZ) was playing for his local club last weekend. The poor sods who played him on Saturday had no answer, He took 8 wickets.
Kane Williamson is a member of my club but was apparently injured last week otherwise he would have played.

I used to play Yorkshire league and if you were unlucky you could end up playing the likes of Craig White or Chris Silverwood on their free weekends.

Jamie used to play Northern League - not been re-signed for 2012 - replaced by Doolan, the Aussie, who I believe is on the brink of the national team

He was at Leyland yes - they terminated his contract under mutual agreement, as it sounds as though Leyland are strapped for cash.

It seems the trend in the Northern League this year is to sign local lads as the 'pro' -  sounds like they're all skint

I would think 2012's weather has hurt both big and small clubs alike. I'd go as far as to say if 2013 is as bad or even half as bad the game will lose a lot of clubs and so players (as 99%) of players have no interest in going to a club and being rotated or not getting regular games.

The days of 5 figure pro coming over have seemed to have disappeared althought there a rise of Asian professionals steadily and the fall of Aussie and Saffas Iam finding.

The rise of the Indian touring academy's has helped a whole generation of cheap professionals into the uk with many on less than 150 a week.

Had some big pros in the Lancs League of late. Faf Du Plessis played with Ramsbottom a few years back whom is now scoring many runs, now my club have signed Brett Pelsar who will be a great addition. In the 90's we had Shane Warne at Accrington when he was 19!!!! Chris Cairns at Bacup also!!

Lou Vincent sub pro'ed for us last year, top bloke! came and did a few senior practices too. Ramsbottom have a LOT of money and seem to get very very good pro's and amateurs to go and play for them. However some of the littler clubs such as colne have had some big pro's such as Anwar Ali a few seasons ago.

Brett is an established 1st class pro, whereas as Luis is a local lad playing county 2nds, so not sure how you've come to that conclusion.

I suppose Luis is a proper all rounder (in fact playing for the unicorns he seemed to play more as a bowler) whereas as Brett is really a batter who's bowling is handy at league level.

I remember the story either last year or year before when Mohammed Amir turned out for a village team illegally. Opened the batting scored 50 odd and took a few wickets with the new ball. Asif also did something similar. Akhtar had a game once in the birmingham leagues to get fit and of course Akram turned out for Smethwick in his top of the line sports car about 5 mins before start of play and bowled serious wheels. Donald turned out for K&D years back also and was lethal!!

Loads of players played club cricket before and after playing test cricket but how many played club cricket whilst they actually we playing international cricket ? Not many in this country now but I think it still happens more often in Australia. In the old Lancashire league it happened all the time while some of these international were in their pomp. Shame it doesn't happen now as much

I have played against Grant Flower (before he played tests) and Joel Garner (after he had retired)

Also to play in the Somerset League - Richie Richardson (Staplegrove) Shane Warne (Bristol) An Aussie Spinner, cant remember his name ? (Knowle) Ian Botham (Yeovil) WG Grace (Downend)

Basically all test players will have played club cricket at some point in their early careers.

Wasim Akram and Akhtar were certainly playing international and or test cricket at the time but yeh not many now. Why would they? Only reason would be for part of the rehab process from injury. For example James Pattinson and Watson recently played in the sydney grades.

There used to be loads in the Northern Leagues - when I was young I got to play against Clayton Lambert, Ijaz Ahmed, Phil Simmons, Kenny Benjamin, Ravi Ratnayake and a fair few others.  In recent years its less frequent - you get the odd one, but only that, and mostly Zimbabweans and Kiwis from what I can tell.

Steve Smith has gone down so rapidly as a cricketer. I know he was never brilliant but he's now bowling very occasional off spin as the leggies went belly up and his batting is now even more unorthodox than ever.
