Thanks to Fattus, I've got an idea to start a topic that might provide a little bit of use during the pre-season. A bit of a coaching clinic. For those of you that have a little bit of a problem with your technique, post it on here (preferably with a video, if not a video then as much detail as you possibly can), and myself and hopefully Buzz, Nick Saunders (haven't asked them yet), and any others who might be coaches could try to provide small bits of wisdom.
The Rules
1. My topic, therefore my rules, and any talk of trigger movements are hereby banned ;)
2. He who posts the first tip shall hold the high ground, and cannot be shot down until the reasons for their advice are made clear (would probably help if you justified your coaching points before needing the discussion, but each to their own)
3. No-one is wrong! Even if it may be to suggest a *shiver* trigger movement, it would be extremely boring and we would all be robots if we were coached the same!
4. Share the Knowledge: make clear your reasons for your advice so that we can all learn from it and become better coaches and better cricketers!
5. No more than 3 coaching points at any one time.... any more will dilute the message and will result in a complete breakdown of technique which may just need a tweak!

Dear Coach
Is there a right or wrong way to hold the bat?
-

Same time of year, same nets, I've tried to work on a few things over the last 12 months but only having 2 hours of a 1 lane net once a week all summer makes it a little harder than normal.
Any comments on differences or just technical deficiencies in general are very welcome.

Not sure you can really tell from either video (I can't) but my main issue is planting the front foot and then having my weight going the wrong way when the ball is straight or outside leg. I've previously been told
One piece of advice - just before delivery you 'bounce ' so that your kness bend a fair bit and therefore causing initial weight movement to offside. Try just relaxing the knees and open up the shoulder alignment slightly to leg side and keep upper body still until you decide which shot to play. this should help in moving to correct alignment at point of contact
which I'm trying but finding difficult after doing it for over 10 years.

Buzz, going by the two pictures you posted does it matter how your back-lift is? One is halfway through the stumps while other is on top. I understand the higher you have, more time you have but overall does it make a notable difference?
Just to let the public know how helpful Buzz is, he has been helping me for past few months now (behind the scene) and he has been enormously helpful, gone out of his way to help me. I'm grateful and indebted to him really #TopTopBloke

well the three Indians in the picture have a few test runs between them and the have similar back lifts, so that may give you an idea, personally I usually say go with what is comfortable.
p.s. thanks for the kind comments!
-
That picture does not show thier backl lift though. All 3 have much higher back lifts which helps generate the power. If you only lift you bat stump high you are not going to hit it off the square.
-
humm difference between back lift and pick up.
you are of course right. these guys all push the bat back higher when the play a shot.
-
As the bowler is releasing the ball, what angle should my legs/ back be.
Start of netting I always get lower back ache and play withy
Posture to find the right fit.
Posting as a batsman.

I see my stance as similar to Mr Priors (albeit a little more timber on me) when the ball is being released but it's probably not. I need to get a video of me on the bowling machine when I get access to it!

Not sure you can really tell from either video (I can't) but my main issue is planting the front foot and then having my weight going the wrong way when the ball is straight or outside leg. I've previously been told
your right about the foot planting. I watched the second video thru twice and for every one of your front foot shots your foot lands in exactly the same place pointing towards cover, even when you are playing the ball to leg. it means your bat has to come round your pads for anything that is straight so you're more likely to get trapped LBW. you're in the perfect position for anything just outside off but if the ball's a little wider you're reaching.
couple of things you can try. The first is open up your stance - have both your front foot and back foot pointing towards cover in your stance. this will help you play the straight ball and the leg side better and it shouldn't effect your offside shots. You'll feel like every ball is going to hit you in the box at first so use a softer ball until you get comfortable.
That is the quick fix. The real issue is muscle memory. All shots are muscle memory. We pick the ball up and without thinking, put our feet in what we hope is the right place. In your case your feet always go to the same place. You've got to reeducate your muscle memory. One method is to get a mate throw tennis balls down at you. Get him to throw them as low full tosses everywhere from wide of off to outside leg. All you have to do is put your left foot down so the tennis ball lands on your foot. Obviously you're not going to do that with 4oz of leather coming down at you but what you will do is get you moving so your muscles know there is more than one place they can land your front foot

Having read Greg Chappells coaching book recently I would say there are some good pointers n there to aid batters and bowlers. From a batters perspective I think there are a number of batters who have had a high bat lift in the past, the indians in the afore posted pic show they initially hold the bats at varying heights, but what the pic would show on delivery of the ball is a 'coiling of the bat' another lift of the bat and this can simply be a cocking of the wrists which basically puts you in a better position to hit the ball. Its not a huge lift of the arms.
In essence I think if you can simplify your method and setup so that you have three things you look at then it makes problem solving quite easy. I look at feet, head position and shoulders positioning.

Guess i would be considered as predominantly a bowling coach! Look forward to seeing your video!

First things first mate, during your run up your weight is backwards, try to get your weight forward! Running technique is key to getting good pace. This weight backward approach is carried into your leap and bound, when all weight should be 'towards' the target. I would suggest trying to 'pump' your arms towards the target like a sprinter, increasing your speed steadily to full tilt. Other than that, we need much much better videos
-
Of course but I will keep that in mind for tommorows nets and the videos tommorow
-
you wont have that run up next sunday ;)
