Haha it's a very common theme, we must remember this for when the Ashes is on. Only big up the Aussies!

Same as - my first reaction? No. By breathing maybe, but no.

You forget he was playing Durham UCCE so chances are that they aren't the same calibre as most county teams.

Apparently a lot of Journo's weren't impressed with him doing it. Then again the other argument is what choice did he have? Its a little degrading to just retire as if they weren't ever going to get him out!

I agree with this. A bit like me this week. Well not quite the same.
I set up a net for my work team, I was batting and a lad who has never played cricket before was bowling, the first couple I just left and edged one which was going wide. He started saying he is in my head and giving it out. So I proceeded to hit the next few over the top of his head and exclaimed "you know what it looks like"
The moral, you can only play what you are playing against, its not his fault, it does look like he was hogging the strike a bit.

Cant have done himself any harm, FC average of around 40 now.. Albeit it was a game featuring no predominant spinners or young blood. You have to take your chances when they come mind.
Might be slightly off topic, but does a jack of all trades (of his ilk) still have a place in international cricket? Nothing entirely special yet offers some concrete options. I think Bresnan is much the same, although the talent he has had to contend with doesn't help.

Yes - do you include Paul Collingwood in that (master of Fielding and just good at hte other stuff)

Was he ever good enough for the England side, that is debatable..He has failed to perform for England when they need him. He was liked by management.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!

I have always thought that Patel is a reasonable cricketer! He is decent with the bat, and can bowl pretty well most of the time!
His fitness has probably improved but still nowhere close to where it should be (resist the pies Samit!) But the biggest disappointment is his fielding!
It's shocking 95% of the time! :o

So so wrong, he stood up and played well for England so many times. I seem to remember him being the only batsman to look in any sort of nick in the Australian tour after the 2005 ashes.

Was like by management because he was a wonderful player for us incredibly admirable performer and him going has left a big hole in the test side

And he averaged just over 40 in tests which is quite a good record.
