After going through some of my gear, I found last years batting pads. Having seen a few comments in the past week I've thought about trying to turn them into coloured batting pads but would need some help and information to start off with!
Firstly, is it actually possible to do? They've got a few scuff marks from diving in but I'm hoping that won't really matter. If it is possible then how would I go about it?
Any ideas are appreciated,

I went on tour to Barbados in 2007 at the end of my final school year. We had a T20 game lined up as part of the tour at the 3W's Oval against the University of West Indies under floodlights, with coloured kit and a white ball.
Being 18 and having just spent all i had on the tour, I didn't really fancy shelling out for a set of coloured pads which were both rare and expensive back then.
I used a can of spray paint on an old set of Hunts County Modulus pads. I still have them somewhere, the colour has begun to come away around the knee roll, but I have slid on more than one occasion in them.
If they are an old/spare set, spray paint should do the job as a low risk easy to apply option. I've seen fabric paint mooted as an option, never tried it myself so can't really comment.

absolutely fine to do just ensure you use a even spread of spray paint so its the same colour all over and dont hold the can too close as it may start to run plus give it a couple of coats to ensure the colour will last

You will need some plastic bags, can of spray paint (colour of your choice, i recommend pink :) ), can of clear coat spray, painters tape that is treated to not let paint through
Steps
1 - Tape the plastic bags to the edges of the pads so all the insides are protected, this takes the longest but worth the effort and attention to detail
2 - lay the pad down on some newspaper or other things that can get paint on but would not damage the surface underneath.
3 - Spray the pads with color, keep the can about 6-8 inches away from the pad at all times. Don't worry about totally absorbing every inch of the pad on first go but make sure edges are well covered by paint but not so much as it starts dripping or running down the sides.
4 - give it a few mins and then remove tape and plastic bags.
5 - Once the paint is fully dry give it a 2nd or 3rd coat that covers any missed spots but try to stay away from edges so the paint doesn't get on the insides
6 - let it dry completely and then spary with clear coat, which will protect the paint from chipping off.
hope this helps, use gloves as its a pain trying to wash off paint from your hands.

As a short team option I played in a colour kit game once where the team had put coloured tape on pads for teams to use. They were old pads but they pulled the tape off afterwards and it didn't look too bad.
You can also get PVC tape which may do the job and come off easily. Won't look the best mind.

when i need a set when i was a boy lol few of used marker pen stayed on fine didnt come off etc just need about 4 pens lol

I've done this with a pair of wicketkeeping pads. Used spray paint, two coats. Did a good job. Paint starting to come off now but that was 2 years ago so I can't complain. Make sure you leave them out for 24-36 to fully dry the paint or it becomes very sticky. And when storing them, dont leave them touching each other (either face to face or face to back) as if they are face to face in any sort of heat the paint can come off when you separate them

Do you guys have any pictures of your own efforts? Would love to see some examples before I even attempt this haha

I just keep them at the club these days, far handier than having the smell of paint around the house. Will try and find them tomorrow evening when I'm down and take a few photo's on my phone

Spray paints came off after using them for nets a bit! But they look much better in person!
-
I don't think they look that bad at all! I guess you could just keep topping them up if need be?

Thats where a spray of clear coat / sealant helps
-
I used vinyl/leather paint which is used to spray car seats..... The colors are limited, but the finish looks awesome :) And it is fairly durable.
-
I think I would be going for the traditional navy kind of colour thats used!
-
Funny, thats the exact colour I used, came up an absolute treat! :D I think the brand is VHT Paint?

These were my spray painted pads after about 3 years of use, they seemed to hold up okay but were starting to look a little tatty by then! If I remember rightly it was just a can of spray paint from B&Q.....not really good enough to play at that level any more so haven't bothered painting them again.

Still trying to decide whether to attempt this or just look to move the pads on to somebody who might want them! Thanks Bez and 123* for sharing your pictures, are there any other members who have got some pictures? :)

You can buy these things from clads4pads and they are essentially a coloured sleeve that fits over your pads. But you have to buy them in from australia and they are around au$30.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. The idea with this would be to actually get the material coloured as they aren't exactly needed and would be a little experiment/something to try!
Clads are also available in England mind such as - http://www.morrant.com/cricket_equipment/clads_4_pads/10315_0c.html (http://www.morrant.com/cricket_equipment/clads_4_pads/10315_0c.html)
Clads4Pads would certainly be the safer and more convenient way but where would the fun be in that? ;)

that is so true!!! I myself would probably use spray paint as it is so much cheaper :)
-
Did anyone succesfully do this? Im thinking of sorting some of my old legends out and putting some dark blue on them? Any advice from experience which has worked would be brill
-
theres no point in doing this when you can just buy some clads off the internet that are just a material and slide over your pad.

Clads are £25 and are risk free.
You can get rattle cans of paint in my local poundland, at 1/25th of the cost of Clads there's a lot more fun to be had going for the cheap option!
-
I have two pairs so have nothing to lose. Im definitely going for the spray option. What paint shall I use? Do I need to coat them in anything afterwards to protect the paint?
-
Am I only one who doesn't like Clads nor like spray painting the pads?
-
Anyone have any advice on colouring them or shall I just gamble?
-
Rub them down, like really good. Cover the softs as well as you can, 2-3 layers of paint, 20-30 cm away to limit running of pain - is it happens, wait till its dry and shave it off with 1000'ish sandpaper. When youre done paining - will take you 2 days with dryingtime, apply 1-2 clear coats. Ive done it a couple of times - here on my Islands:

I needed a pair of navy pads for white ball cricket. Found this thread and decided to give it a go. Here's my efforts using the VHT cloth/vinyl dye mentioned above and a couple of coats of VHT clear coat. Bought it all on eBay. Pads are a couple of years old and very well worn.
Taping up the backs was the hardest bit and you need to take time over this of you want a really tidy job. I sprayed them in the garden so didn't worry too much about making a mess. First coat was fairly light. Second coat applied 10 minutes later and final coat after an hour. Was told not to spray too close so did it from about 12" away. Touch dry in an hour and cured in a couple of days. I then applied 2 light coats of clear coat lacquer. End result looks pretty good and finish seems very tough. All in cost less than £15.

looks a really smart job that mate

Not so sure on the clear. So shiny!
In Matt form I love them!

I guess they will wipe down better though!
-
£15 materials, £800's worth of tape!
Looks good though, don't mind the shiny finish, dazzle the bowler on his run up.
-
Should have used a matt lacquer rather than a clear coat, they'll be blinding in the sun. But top job :)
-
Update - the lacquer cracks when the pads bend. Should have used a flexible lacquer instead or just left them with the matt paint finish because that doesn't crack. Doesn't look too bad a the cracks disappear when the pads go back to normal shape.
-
Love the matte finish.
-
Been asked a few times about the paint I used. It's this
VHT SATIN VINYL & CLOTH SEAT & CARPET PENETRATING DYE
http://www.vhtpaint.com/specialty/vht-vinyl-dye (http://www.vhtpaint.com/specialty/vht-vinyl-dye)
Readily available on eBay and Amazon
I don't recommend using the lacquer as it doesn't stretch and will crack. The vinyl paint flexes nicely and looks good in a matt finish.
-
@bk ..top work
-
@kaartman Thanks. A bit of trial and error but a good cheap way of getting coloured pads.
-
Looks great!
Might have to try this with a pair of old pads!
-
I tried this but found that the vinyl spray does crack a touch, miles better than ordinary pray paint but not as good as anticipated.
-
I used Plasti-dip, looked awesome, but peels if it tears at the edges. Leaves a white pad if you peel it all off though, as it just sits on the surface.
-
Struggling to find any red VHT vinyl dye online. Anyone know when it's sold in the UK?
Alternatively, has anyone used this stuff? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260923656314 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260923656314)

Last year sent two emails and a website info request to gccc. Heard nothing.
Made a phone call, was told emails are down, phonecall going well before being told "will phone back with a delivery quote"
2days and hear nothing.
Make another call and told "sorry no one in that can help currently, send an email we reply to them all within 24hrs" when I questioned why I was told emails were down previously they hung up the phone.
So
Sent one email to kingsgrove, 10days later had a fully knocked in Warner in my hands.
WRONG THREAD ALERT! :D
