[Twelfth Man]

After going through some of my gear, I found last years batting pads. Having seen a few comments in the past week I've thought about trying to turn them into coloured batting pads but would need some help and information to start off with!

Firstly, is it actually possible to do? They've got a few scuff marks from diving in but I'm hoping that won't really matter. If it is possible then how would I go about it?

I went on tour to Barbados in 2007 at the end of my final school year. We had a T20 game lined up as part of the tour at the 3W's Oval against the University of West Indies under floodlights, with coloured kit and a white ball.

Being 18 and having just spent all i had on the tour, I didn't really fancy shelling out for a set of coloured pads which were both rare and expensive back then.

I used a can of spray paint on an old set of Hunts County Modulus pads. I still have them somewhere, the colour has begun to come away around the knee roll, but I have slid on more than one occasion in them.

If they are an old/spare set, spray paint should do the job as a low risk easy to apply option. I've seen fabric paint mooted as an option, never tried it myself so can't really comment.

absolutely fine to do just ensure you use a even spread of spray paint so its the same colour all over and dont hold the can too close as it may start to run plus give it a couple of coats to ensure the colour will last

You will need some plastic bags, can of spray paint (colour of your choice, i recommend pink ), can of clear coat spray, painters tape that is treated to not let paint through

Steps
1 - Tape the plastic bags to the edges of the pads so all the insides are protected, this takes the longest but worth the effort and attention to detail
2 - lay the pad down on some newspaper or other things that can get paint on but would not damage the surface underneath.
3 - Spray the pads with color, keep the can about 6-8 inches away from the pad at all times. Don't worry about totally absorbing every inch of the pad on first go but make sure edges are well covered by paint but not so much as it starts dripping or running down the sides.
4 - give it a few mins and then remove tape and plastic bags.
5 - Once the paint is fully dry give it a 2nd or 3rd coat that covers any missed spots but try to stay away from edges so the paint doesn't get on the insides
6 - let it dry completely and then spary with clear coat, which will protect the paint from chipping off.

hope this helps, use gloves as its a pain trying to wash off paint from your hands.

As a short team option I played in a colour kit game once where the team had put coloured tape on pads for teams to use. They were old pads but they pulled the tape off afterwards and it didn't look too bad.

You can also get PVC tape which may do the job and come off easily. Won't look the best mind.

when i need a set when i was a boy lol few of used marker pen stayed on fine didnt come off etc just need about 4 pens lol

I've done this with a pair of wicketkeeping pads. Used spray paint, two coats. Did a good job. Paint starting to come off now but that was 2 years ago so I can't complain. Make sure you leave them out for 24-36 to fully dry the paint or it becomes very sticky. And when storing them, dont leave them touching each other (either face to face or face to back) as if they are face to face in any sort of heat the paint can come off when you separate them

I just keep them at the club these days, far handier than having the smell of paint around the house. Will try and find them tomorrow evening when I'm down and take a few photo's on my phone

Spray paints came off after using them for nets a bit! But they look much better in person!

I don't think they look that bad at all! I guess you could just keep topping them up if need be?

Thats where a spray of clear coat / sealant helps

I used vinyl/leather paint which is used to spray car seats..... The colors are limited, but the finish looks awesome And it is fairly durable.

I think I would be going for the traditional navy kind of colour thats used!
