Title: Is Agar the next big thing?
Post by: Number4 on July 15, 2013, 12:59:19 PM
I know it's very early to tell but is Agar going to be the next big thing in Aussie cricket? .. He does have a special aura about him I think

Looked freakily calm throughout the whole game.

He'll be in the side a while I think. I reckon he could go the whole Ashes (in England and Aus) over the next year.

Not sure for how long after, I get the feeling Aus are still searching for the next Shane Warne.

First and foremost he's a bowler so if he doesn't perform with the ball the he won't play. Countless people have entered international cricket and set the world alight only to disappear within a few years.

He definitely has some potential but needs to improve his bowling. I know there were comments about a slight cut / injury to his finger but he's not had the worst debut!

What I would say is that if he wants to get more turn he will have to have a chat about how he holds the ball with swannie (perhaps after Jan next year!)

He has a wonderful eye for a ball and a good range of shots.

There is a whole lot of Ben Holioake about him. I hope his will be a much happier story.

His batting in the first innings reminded me a lot of KP when he first broke into the England side, he could be the next big thing, but with the Aussies selection policy for spinners he might not get an extended run in the side

What do you think is the issue with his grip, I was away for a couple of days and missed both England innings?

He doesnt bowl it with a conventional spinners grip, the ball comes out with a scrambled seam, I'm surprised he's got to test match level without anybody noticing.

i reckon england will target him now over the rest of the series as he doesnt get much turn

Looks like to me his arm isn't vertical on release and the ball comes out on it's belly, like a cross seam. Great for getting bounce but not so great for side spin. Rumour had it he was struggling with spinning finger injury and the finger was tapped up. As a consequence he wasn't gripping it correctly to minimise finger contact with the seam.

I would of thought before this test match his bowling would of done the talking not his batting

He is a very promising young player who will either benefit for or be hindered by Australia's dearth of quality spinners, depending on how badly he gets targeted and, conversely. on how good a coaching he gets with Australia.  He reminds me a little of Adil Rashid in that he has come on to the scene and been spotted early, and in that his batting is good enough that many sins will be forgiven.

No. In one word.

He had one good match, doesn't do much with the ball. Part time test player at best.

He's only 19 though, plenty of time for improvement. :D Perhaps now that he's sponsored, he can spend more time with his cricket and not worry as much about finding a job etc. etc. I liked what I saw when he batted, and he wasn't too bad with the ball, he should probably focus more on bowling though, as Australia lack a spinner and seem to do fine in the lower batting order department!

Clearly you're Garry Sobers or off that ilk.

Spinners normally mature at 30.

Agar's a kid.

The potential is 10 fold.

He's got an excellent temperament. He's willing to learn and develop.

After a couple of full season in the Sheffield Shield, he'll be a might fine player.

Problem is alot of people get excited when a young player bursts on to the scene but most of the time they do not amount to much in test match cricket. I like the fact that the oz gave a young kid a chance in a test match which i think england could do with trying out, but in all honesty will he become the next big thing? Probably not. If he was going to become a huge star people would have known about him by now. All of the legendary players have been making headlines since they started senior cricket. He will be good, but nothing amazing.

Agar only made his first class debut the winter just gone.

That was only because Western Australian team mate Michael Beer smashed his shoulder.

So Agar's ahead of schedule

looks a decent laid back fella who seems to just be enjoying his cricket which is good to see.  Obviously isn't anywhere near the finished article at present but what was Swann doing at Agar's age, will be very interesting to see him in a few years time and how he has developed as I think he certainly has the potential!
