Hi, I'm looking at yet another new stick as its quite a bit cheaper to bring bats in from England than buy here in Aus and I was hoping to get some feedback on the modern GM's. They seem really hard pressed: do they open up and perform? How long before they really ping? I'm looking at a new Shane Watson Icon Players Edition. Are they worth it?
Cheers.

What are you looking to pay for that GM bat? Helps in giving a comparison to other makes of bat and their comparative price and performance.

I'm lucky enough to be picking from the top of the tree: £400 in Aus $'s is still pretty cheap compared to what we pay here.

They are hard pressed - built to last but unfortunately the middle is not powerful at all.
Of course others will disagree but this is my experience.

I've experienced both sides of this. Had a Luna that I could barely hit the ball off the square with a couple of seasons ago, then used a mate's Purist that was 5 years old that was an absolute weapon. Timed shots disappearing for fours without any effort whatsoever. Luna has since opened up, but is still nothing like that Purist was.

This is utter bs. I had a Icon 606 that went pretty much instantly and has been the best bat I've used beating Newberys, GNs, Pumas, SAF etc. My new one hasn't gone as well yet but I'd still say it goes better than most shelf brands.
I've used a fair few bats from each brand and I still prefer GM, whether that's because of various factors that suit me or because it's how they're made.
I think you can't go far wrong with GM, the consistency from 606-Original L.E will be good.

I have just picked up a 909 Flare for £30 which seems to have a solid middle. Just a crack in the toe is the issue.

Got to agree with Colesy here - his 606 went well from what I saw, and I have a Hero 808 which is still an awesome bat after nearly 4 seasons (only replaced as my match bat after acquiring an H4L).
-
Should add to what I said, that my failure to get along with the Luna 606 was more to do with how it suited my style of play I think. Was probably just a little too heavy for me and I didn't like the way it picked up. Other GMs I've used have been superb, and I would not hesitate to recommend them. Their middles do sound different though.

I've got an apex limited edition which took a while to open up and now it goes like a train but I've also had an icon 909 + which went from the off :)
-
Joe Roots seems to go ok... :D
-
I played against a guy with a 909 catalyst yesterday.
he helped himself to a super hundred.
I agree with Colesy, they will go as well as the user allows it!
can I just go off topic and say that the catalyst is my new favourite GM shape... thick edges, no concaving decent spine height. lovely.

I had a Gunn Moore Flare Original and was the one of the best bats i have ever had. It had
a pronounced bow and the middle was awesome. On my first bat with it, without much knocking in, I carried my bat.
Scored 92*.

I used my Epic yesterday which had been my second choice bat this season and hit 80 not out off 69 balls. Had been underwhelmed with the bat during winter nets but used it at nets on Thursday and it felt much better. Still feel it is nowhere near its peak performance yet.

I've never found any GM hard pressed. My son has an Apex original LE and its an absolute gun... Went from day one

400 pounds is still high 600 aus $$, why would you risk it for another 50-100 on a bat you can't feel? plus you support aussie jobs. And for the record GM bats are pressed quite hard.

I have bought several bats from Julian Millichamp and have enjoyed the experience. I also bought a Bradbury Players ($675) model which had a middle the size of a Neutron and was hard as a rock. I took it back to Chappells and they agreed with me and sent it back to Bradbury who promptly denied any responsibility. I had a similar experience with an M&H and they replaced the bat no questions asked. My money, my choice.
-
Of course it's your choice but if you're doing it only to save a few bucks it's not a very well informed one. The Watson bats are softer than most of their stock bats for the record, big profiled high middled bats.

Thanks mate, that's the sort of info I was after as I have found most GM's are pretty hard. :)

I've found GM's top be pretty hit or miss. Either an amazing bat that flies and looks great or looks great but isn't a great performer. The profiles look nice and the grain looks good, however sometimes they don't 'go'. If I were you, I'd go and have a look and knock a ball up on one rather than importing it.

Yeah, seems to be a recurring theme here... ;)

I've had an
(i) Apex 505 (2.9) - a good small middle but off-middle it was like a door and sent severe vibrations up your arm - it never opened up further.
(ii) Icon 808 (2.8) - very good bat from the start, beautiful pick up, good sized middle and fairly user-friendly on off-centre hits (sorry I'm more of a tennis player so my descriptions might reveal this but my sons are cricket mad so I got more into it with them) - it definitely opened up over time.
(iii) Halo Original LE (2.7) - unbelievable bat, part of a batch that came to Australia that were quite light yet had thicker shoulders and toe than the norm. Played beautifully fro the start, a total dream of a bat - all that have had a go with it agree. It was much softer pressed than the other two and basically felt fully open from the start.
-
So you get what you pay for eh?
That said, there are some fantastic sticks at 606 level, saw a guy with a light Icon a year ago that played as well as any bat I've seen. Wavy grains, heartwood and some graping, but it flew out of the screws.
-
Maybe not always it was not my experience with these bats - the Icon 808 was very good and probably for price relative to performance was better value for money than the Halo.
-
I had a Flare Original for about 6 weeks and it was a lovely bat! I have also tried the zona, argon and icon f2, but whilst they were nice, I don't like the flat face, but the zona certainly performed well, the icon was solid all round, but the argon felt like it needed a couple of grips because it had quite a thin handle, may just have been that one though
-
I may have one arriving in a day or too thanks to Mr Stig, I will let you know how it goes...!
-
I bought an 808 zona from here. Seems to already have opened up and goes like a gun!
I only bought it as I wanted to own a flat faced bat, and expected not to use it, but it's actually a great bat.
It's joined my kit bag with my b3 and kahuna. 2nd b3 is retired to the shed because!
-
Received a GM 606 argon F2 this week
Massive bat and already pings great
-
Wasn't there a member on here who was working at G&M and was asked to press bats with little training or experience? Said that he was pressing all grades at a standard press.

Thanks mate! I went ahead and bought one and must say the middle is quite lovely and long. The toe is quite hard which I suppose is what GM is after but overall, very happy so far!
I've also just got M&H Master back from having TAS inserts fitted and all I can say is...... WOW! More on that later....
