GM's Perform?
« on: July 18, 2013, 08:25:42 AM »

Hi, I'm looking at yet another new stick as its quite a bit cheaper to bring bats in from England than buy here in Aus and I was hoping to get some feedback on the modern GM's. They seem really hard pressed: do they open up and perform? How long before they really ping? I'm looking at a new Shane Watson Icon Players Edition. Are they worth it?
Cheers.

What are you looking to pay for that GM bat? Helps in giving a comparison to other makes of bat and their comparative price and performance.

I'm lucky enough to be picking from the top of the tree: £400 in Aus $'s is still pretty cheap compared to what we pay here.

They are hard pressed - built to last but unfortunately the middle is not powerful at all.

Of course others will disagree but this is my experience.

I've experienced both sides of this.  Had a Luna that I could barely hit the ball off the square with a couple of seasons ago, then used a mate's Purist that was 5 years old that was an absolute weapon.  Timed shots disappearing for fours without any effort whatsoever.  Luna has since opened up, but is still nothing like that Purist was.

This is utter bs. I had a Icon 606 that went pretty much instantly and has been the best bat I've used beating Newberys, GNs, Pumas, SAF etc. My new one hasn't gone as well yet but I'd still say it goes better than most shelf brands.

I've used a fair few bats from each brand and I still prefer GM, whether that's because of various factors that suit me or because it's how they're made.

I think you can't go far wrong with GM, the consistency from 606-Original L.E will be good.

I have just picked up a 909 Flare for £30 which seems to have a solid middle. Just a crack in the toe is the issue.

Got to agree with Colesy here - his 606 went well from what I saw, and I have a Hero 808 which is still an awesome bat after nearly 4 seasons (only replaced as my match bat after acquiring an H4L).

Should add to what I said, that my failure to get along with the Luna 606 was more to do with how it suited my style of play I think.  Was probably just a little too heavy for me and I didn't like the way it picked up.  Other GMs I've used have been superb, and I would not hesitate to recommend them.  Their middles do sound different though.

I've got an apex limited edition which took a while to open up and now it goes like a train but I've also had an icon 909 + which went from the off :)

I played against a guy with a 909 catalyst yesterday.

he helped himself to a super hundred.

I agree with Colesy, they will go as well as the user allows it!

can I just go off topic and say that the catalyst is my new favourite GM shape... thick edges, no concaving decent spine height. lovely.

I had a Gunn Moore Flare Original and was the one of the best bats i have ever had. It had

a pronounced bow and the middle was awesome. On my first bat with it, without much knocking in, I carried my bat.

Scored 92*.

I used my Epic yesterday which had been my second choice bat this season and hit 80 not out off 69 balls. Had been underwhelmed with the bat during winter nets but used it at nets on Thursday and it felt much better. Still feel it is nowhere near its peak performance yet.

I've never found any GM hard pressed. My son has an Apex original LE and its an absolute gun... Went from day one
