Title: Pics of your SD bargains
Post by: tushar sehgal on October 21, 2013, 01:54:12 AM
So it seems like a lot of us took advantage of SD sale and got some good deals and some not so good. Figured we start a thread to post pics of what we got and how we rate it.

Here is what I got for my mates, 2 bats, a GN Oblivion Monster (exactly 3lbs) and GN Maverick 5 star (2lbs 9ozs). Monster is really huge, egdes are almost 50mm and no concaving, maverick is alright...pick up is not too bad on the monster and will make a nice net bat. Haven't tried the mallett or a ball on either one yet..

Here are the pics, feel free to share your bargains...

That must be annoying,  particularly not that all the bargains are out of stock. My maverick is coming tomorrow, really hope it's not harrow :(

Just got my Harrow Carbo too. They must be relisting the harrows that are returned back to them. Will be taking it up with amazon payments since SD never reply back to emails.
The kookaburra I got seems a bargain, will stick the pics up in a bit

FAO csnew

Sports Direct online contact number is 0870 042 3879, I had an issue with an order going missing and they refunded pretty much straight away.

Best giving them a ring as close to 6pm as possible I found.

Hope you sort your issue.

I got a Harrow Carbo too. Though I emailed them and threatened them under the sale of goods act and they replied in 5 mins with a Freepost address for the return and a huge apology.

This is the very reason I never purchased any bats. Would always be very hit or miss with what you get. Mate of mine got a menace 950 with 5 grains..

That Kook looks like a great buy for £33. How does the bat pick up, what's the weight? Gutted I have missed out on some bargains. I may have to get in quickly with some accessories and clothing items whilst they're still about, maybe some gloves as we whilst I'm at it! Anybody buy softs from SD from the bargains?

Think the menace blitz is still available.
It weighs 2lb 10, not the greatest pick ups feels a little heavy.
Might order the blitz too

That's a really nice looking v100.
Always wanted to try one of those TAZ bats. Have you noticed any difference between the two when tapping up?

The v100 seems very responsive,  I have high hopes for the v360 but I think it needs a lot of prep. I was a little apprehensive to get a tas bat after seeing pauls ijc review, but it picks up very well with the inserts and doesn't feel heavy at 2-11.

Went a bit silly...

Left to right, Kahuna Mayhem (32.99), 2 x Menace Blitz (£29.99) and the Menace 950, still not sure I like the shape and feel of the Menace but as one of the Blitz picks up very similar to the 950 think I have a decent net/match pairing. Likely the other Blitz will end up in our club kit bag. No idea what they weigh as my scales are shot but all 4 don't feel heavier than 2.10.

Title: Re: Pics of your SD bargains
Post by: frooper11 on October 24, 2013, 08:33:56 PM
No, no grain sheets. I think the Kooks with grain sheets are advertised as having a 'non-oil' face, it was only the lack of this in the description that made me have a gamble on buying them.

No mate they don't, they are English willow and all including mine look very nice for the money. I have used mine twice and it pings very well.

I bought the Slazenger retro pro tour pads and xlite gloves, good value for £50 and £35. I was tempted by the GN oblivion test pads but wanted matching gloves lol.

I would have gone down the kook route but I'm not keen on all the colours etc.  I prefer traditional looking pads.

You must have a massive stash now Chris! !

Yea I have but that's the problems with being a kit geek I have to have softs to match my bats so that means I have a fair few sets of softs. Also at the prices SD has been selling kit for it's not exactly wallet damaging prices is it. Just means I have to hide a few more cricket items in the garage

Don't know which ones to get rid of now  :(.
They all ping well, the 2 Menace better than the kahuna. 1 of the Menace Has 43mm edges

Took a Punt on the GM, not the biggest edges but sounds and goes well. Since most of the kookaburra's have gone, The GM is worth considering

Finally after lot of debates i was able to stop myself from getting any of the bats...yes yes i know it doesn't happen here but had to think about the next few purchases (A hawk Players edition coming my way this week ) and not knowing the weight wasn't ideal. Ended up getting the bat care kit , couple sets of whites, a mongoose kit bag and a pair of shades which wasnt a bad deal at all considering the shipping cost to US as well.
Really happy with the purchases.

I quite like the gloves, more so than the pads - do the gloves seem good from first impressions? Very tempted by the new slaz gloves for 2014 as it was always my preferred brand when I was younger but the sports direct link puts me off slightly.

I've grown up using Slazenger gear and really rate it. I know they don't have a massive appeal due to the SD connection but can't you get GM, GN etc gear through SD?

Gloves are comfortable and light, the pads are also very comfortable. My only criticism is that the top hat seem to be a little think, probably over protective.  Very good quality though.

Haven't taken any pics of my stuff from SD as it's all 'little essentials'. I ended up with two new pairs of trousers, a long sleeved shirt, two new balls for the bag, a pair of pad shorts, and some sunglasses. May have to make another visit to the website for another browse though.

Same here and i believe a few years ago they went downhill massively put the last couple of years i feel they have really picked up again. Again a few years back the SD would have put me off but what SD offer now is a very decent selection from various brands so i wouldn't worry about it especially when it comes to softs.

The fall from grace was a shame, however I do feel they are starting to concentrate on cricket gear again.

I think this kit looks awesome Ryan - I would have been filling my boots with this kit from the SD sale if I had been in the market.
I hope it is as comfortable as it looks.

Slazenger may be a little maligned - but I believe the softs especially represent really good value and these look good too.

I think my main hesitation in buying slaz these days is the sports direct link but realistically this probably only applies to the SD specific models of kit, the stuff in other retailers is probably much the same quality as other brands. The 2014 kit does look very good and the v360 bag I have is great.

It's a shame slaz can be viewed in this way as like others have said they were brilliant in the 90's when I used them.

Again if I'm not mistaken, there are a few different companies that have exclusive agreements with SD on particular models, for example a Gray Nicholls Oblivion Monster was only available through SD?

Slazenger is owned by Sports Direct though unless I am very much mistaken.

I don't understand your point.  I think we are all aware that SD own Slazenger.

My point was some people wouldn't rate a product actually designed and made by a company like Sports Direct based on their business model rather than not trust gear from other companies just sold by SD as you intimated here:
I've grown up using Slazenger gear and really rate it. I know they don't have a massive appeal due to the SD connection but can't you get GM, GN etc gear through SD?

Alternatively the zero working hours offer the opportunity for flexible working and allow people to have short term work very easily.

Just because the guardian/labour party calls it "exploitation" doesn't mean that it is or that they are bad.

Technically i work zero hours in both my jobs.

I appreciate that i am in a fairly unique situation, with a bit more security than most other zero hours employees, but i agree with Buzz, a zero hour contract can be a positive thing. It allows me to go off on a cricket jolly like a Thames Valley Gents tour as and when i please without having to worry about how much holiday i have used up at work etc. Also allows me to be very flexible with working hours themselves.

My family business is a care agency, and i do a lot of the ad-hoc work such as dealing with county council contracts, needs/risk assessments with new/existing clients, interviewing new staff, appraising current staff etc.

And then there is Vitas Cricket, Robin is a bit of a free spirit and i knew he would need a lot of help/support and also occasionally a rudder to keep his cricket retail venture going. Being one of my closest friends i decided it was right that i stepped in to do that role.

This thread has gone off on a bit of a tangent!

Zero hours contracts are the best things for loads of uni students at our club. Keeps their records on the books of a company so when they are back for holidays they can step in straight away without having to register at a temp agency and have their wages creamed off by them.

Sounds to me like you're trying to avoid discussing the issue raised. I don't think we have veered off topic. The title clearly says it is about SD bargains.

How do they do it, eh?

Yes. Apartheid. That is a thoroughly justifiable comparison.

Thanks for that.

I just don't want to talk about politics on a forum about cricket bats.

Of course it is. The link is oppression.

If we're being pedantic, this forum is actually 'about' custom cricket bats ie cricket bats not sold in SD.

When do you talk about politics?

I'm not avoiding anything. But as an Admin of a very large forum (nothing to do with cricket) i understand the frustration of threads veering wildly from one subject to the next, often to the point where someone new dropping in on page 20 for example will have no idea what is being discussed, especially considering the title of the topic remains the same.

SD pay the minimum wage, they don't break any laws. They buy equipment on clearance and in bulk, i suspect that even then they make tiny margins, and at this time of year during their big bargain sale that so many of us (myself included) have taken advantage of, they are clearing their warehouse at a loss to make way for new stock.

Do they exploit workers? Ultimately it is the individuals choice on where they work. Yes i know there is a jobs crisis at the moment, but as a quick example i know a number of friends/contacts who have had jobs available that they are unable to fill, it has been like this for months.

My point was just a counter to the hype about zero hours contracts being exploitative.

Did we say apartheid in South Africa isn't too bad because it's not as bad as what the Nazis did?

Not my original post but i can give you an example. My friend has been ytring to fill a junior web developer vacancy for nearly a year. He's tried apprenticeships the lot but there just arent alot of people out there with the skills (or people prepared to learn them).

So there is your example, really not sure its relevant to the forum or threads original intentions. If you'd like to discuss it further please can you start a new thread in the pavilion? I'm not trying to stifle you but this thread has 5 pages of fairly decent healthy debate and now it will go dead as people read this.

So back to SD bargains.....

Well, to help get this back on track....

I bought a couple of pairs of trousers, socks along with a pair of batting pads. In addition, although technically not SD, I bought a used GN Viper Carbo from ebay for the rather impressive £5.50 + postage. It was advertised as used but didn't declare that it had a crack at the bat. Although i was rather miffed it is easily fixed with some glue and more than happy with the total of just over £11 for the cost of what looks like a decent stick!

Pads are Quantum Elites. Bought them to potentially wear or sell on @ £30 but have decided to keep them and Jake from Vitas is kindly helping me choose some batting gloves to go with them!

Back on topic. Treated myself to the GT pads and gloves, they look classy and are well made. This is the first time I have matching pads, gloves and bat , if only I had sense to buy the Cadbury bag when Soulman had it on sale !.
