5 viv richards

Thought one - it is nearly impossible to compare pre-WW1 with post WW2 given the comparative levels of footage available.  If we're taking pure stats from that period, George Hurst walks in, and I doubt any of you have even heard of him....

Barnes had an amazing record, but there is no way of knowing how he would have coped in a later era.

Grace should be nowhere near - he was a well known cheat and should be replaced by Len Hutton.

Tendulkar, Wasim and Knott are all borderline selections - could just as easily got for any of Ponting, Chappell, Walcott, Miandad, Turner/ Trueman, Holding, Lillee, Hadlee, Khan/ Gilchrist, Sangakkara, Marsh, Engineer, Walcott again...

you can swap Kallis in for Tendulkar for me and a load of different keeper options over Allan Knot (Gilchrest, De Villiars etc)

Personally would have gone for Punter or Lara ahead of Tendulkar.

WG Grace wouldn't be in, I'd probably be more inclined to go for Gordon Greenidge instead (and if I wanted someone who didn't walk I'd pick Broad as he can bowl a bit too ;) )

If possible I'd like to see Murali in the side, Kallis would probably deserve a place too.

Could there also be an argument to include Dravid, Gilchrist, Amla, Jayasuria, De Villiers, Lillie, Ajmal, Steyn, Clark, Sangakara, Gavaskar, or Cook (among others, these were just off the top of my head)

This is always going to spark some debate.

Wisden must be regarded as the voice of the MCC and therefore, in terms of this, bias towards certain players (W.G.Grace).

Aside from Bradman, Richards and Sobers, I think people will have very different views as to who should, or shouldn't, be in this side.

I grew up as a kid looking at players such as Lara, Warne, Murali, Tendulkar, McGrath, Dravid, Waugh etc... In their respective primes, but I am sure the older, and younger generations would have their opinions.

For example, if you are looking for wicket keepers, Knott over Healy is an interesting one. You also have Jack Russell for pure glove work but if that is not important, and average is, Gilchrist would be a good shout.

surely a lot of this depends on opposition/pitch/conditions but could be a case for O'Reilly/Laker to get a spot too. also agree that Grace should be dropped as has already been said he was a known cheat.

Do you mean Stuart Clark? I don't think he even took 100 test wickets?

Cook and Amla have a long way to go for me, but I do like the good healthy debate, and I'd agree and say all three deserve more to be in there than Grace!

Yeah if you like, I've had a drink or 5 so only misspelling Clark(e) is an achievement i'd say  :D

Grace as a player, no. He was a bully and a cheat. Mind you, the umpires wouldn't dare give any of this team out with the thought of WG to answer to. :(
Just looked up stats for Sydney Barnes and just going by his moustache he's in.
Other bowlers, Laker,Verity,Thomson ???
Batsman, Gooch, Ponting,Kallis Dravid Gavaskar.

Many members on this forum debate sachins presence in this team....
But as per me and many other great cricketers he is surely the best batsmen of this era....
Few days back I read a list of a few quotes on sachin by other cricketers...and was floored by the immense respect this guy holds in this cruel world .

I'd go for Larwood ahead of Akram and John Murray ahead of Alan Knott. For sheer entertainment I'd have Colin Milburn in for WG.

with all respect to the guy, Tendulkar should be punted for Lara. Lara had a team which started of as one of the best, and ended off as a mere shadow of what it once was. to play so brilliantly in a team in constant decline takes determination, something tendulkar never truly had too face. mcgrath surely has to be there instead of barnes, and gilchrist instead of knot for batting depth, and healy for pure glovesman. wisden is way too biased towards english players. it would be like me putting a BD player in the team, even though some of the stupid fans from my country think that there should be. the english players deserve to be there, but you look at gilchrist, mcgrath, kallis, ponting, imran khan, hadlee and murali and you got to think, they should be there too. i think a more fair comparison would be modern era cricketers, perhaps post ww2, or even post Kerry Packer. i think it would certainly would be an interesting point of discussion.

I actually really rate Gilly, but with Warne selected I've just heard waaaaay too much of him chirping after every ball!  ;) :D

If that's the most annoying Kamran Akmal's constant jibberring behind the stumps must be a close 2nd!

You err... You've not really looked at the Doctor's stats then have you... 2000 FC wickets, 10-wicket hauls, more 5fers then I care to count... Haha

Oh and if we're looking at keepers... Les Ames? Godfrey Evans? Andy Flower? WG shouldn't be in, Hutton would be my shout.
