Hi all. We are going to post pics of grade 3 clefts waiting to be shaped up. These will be going up until Christmas as they are a fantastic Christmas present. Unbelievable performance from these clefts they just aren't as pretty, poor things they can't help it. You shouldn't judge on first impressions they say and in this case that is certainly true. They are currently £125 so get in touch soon as these will be going up in price after Christmas as we re-structure as these have been a real give away up to now in fact we have virtually been giving them away at that.
Get in touch guys these perform as well as anything you will get your hands on and only £125

1,4,6 look unreal, and these are grade 3? Mustresist.
-
Bargain. Well worth sending the wife the link 'by mistake' as a helpful xmas hint.
-
Well just get in touch guys. They are all pressed to perfection to get the nets out of each piece of wood. Absolute giveaway at that price.

Paul the 5th cleft along with the mainly clean face and 2tone willow up towards the shoulder would this come down to a. 2.9 weight? Also can we have these made in the new shape with the full spine into the toe? If so you may have a sale mate
Chris
-
Soulman yes that will get down to 2-9 it weighs in at the moment at 3-7 so about spot on for what you want. Yes can be made in the new shape without any problems whatsoever

My pick too - will look proper old school and all the better for it. Remember, these clefts are pressed individually to get the best from them.

Paul do you have any pics of a finished grade 3 bat?

this will give you an idea. http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=21832.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=21832.0)

That doesn't ping like what you would think of grade 3. I'm guessing the middle on most of Paul's bats are fairly in the middle?!
-
He will put it exactly where you want it. He presses them to perform, not one size fits all.

Exactly, where ever you want the middle he can place it.
My bat is pretty low but extends quite high. Long low middle is what I requested and that's what I got.

I will post some in next few days have a few to make up.

Ok here's a grade 3 shaped up and just oiled for someone on here. It's in the very latest shape of which my stickers haven't even been made yet but it's a beauty.

Looking really good, reminds me a lot of of the M&H Solution, and to some extent the Woodworm Torch profile. How many shapes will you you have in the new range Paul?
-
There will be 3

Looks really good, especially for a G3, seen worse supposedly G1 and 2's.

Is this some sort of joke Paul!
How on earth is that a grade 3 - I've seen worse top grade bats from GN and M&H - a superb looking bat.
-
that is an awesome bat cant believe its only grade 3.
what is the reason for this grading?
-
The reason it's a grade 3 is that it is a grade 3. We grade our bats very much on performance but looks do have to come into it. For me it hasn't got enough perfect grains to counter act the amount of heart wood in it really. It's a personal choice from my point of view. Now that we are becoming more popular and we have shops wanting to get involved with me I have to be even more ruthless in many ways which is a shame but that's the way it is unfortunately because the way we press we get great performance through all the grades
-
I can't wait to get my hands on it Paul!!
-
Looks really good, especially for a G3, seen worse supposedly G1 and 2's.
Well the fact is that if you are offered a grade 1 for £80 or £90 the chances are it sins a grade 1. It could be for sure but if it is the person who's made it hasn't made any money on it as the best part of that £90 is for the cleft alone then you have to fit a quality handle and then your glues bindings grips and stickers never mind labour.the saying is, If it seems too good to be true it probably is
-
Some serious value for money here.
Chris, that 5th cleft looks great.
Paul, that new shape looks lovely! Really wish i had some money, and less bats...
-
You could make a killing making proper Purist replicas, Paul, in grade 3.
How light could you make them, without sacrificing performance?
-

Yes I absolutely love the shape. And it's pick up is unbelievable too, I love the more traditional shape bats I think they still take a lot of beating. It's all down to fashion but I reckon these will be the next popular thing

Well it's dependent on what clefts we get in. If they start off heavier obviously it's harder to get the weight down. People get hung up on weight and specifically finished weight. Other bat makers may not agree with me but looking at it from a players point of view I want as much wood in my bat as possible but still having the bat feel right in hand. I personally think the best way of doing this is by having the weight you want but when the bat is naked. The reason for this is that by the time you have bound and gripped it there is between 2-4 oz of weight in these items alone dependent on your specific products, my grips alone weigh a good 2 oz. So if you want a 2-7 the bat would need to be 2-4is before you dress it. But when you put the bindings on and grip it the extra weight is going into the top of the bat so this makes the pick up even better. So if you have a bat maker that makes bats with a good pick up you are made, you can have it made at 2-7 naked it will come out 2-9 2-10 finished but it feels great and has more wood in it and so hopefully if pressed properly giving you greater performance. I made one up for an old playing colleague who usually uses 2-8 / 9 and he went away with 2-11 as it felt so good for him.

Good point. I usually use 2.8 but picked up a amplus and the 2.10 felt really good so I took the 2.10 instead of the 2.86 and yes the 2.10 had a lot more wood, almost no concaving
-
A little concaving is fine really what spoils it is when they take huge amounts out so the edges look big but you have lost the guts of the bat. Gentle concaving is fine if it's done in the right way.
-
can't argue with that
-
Will post some more grade 3 pics up for grabs tomorrow afternoon
-
Great.
-
Ok as promised here are some more grade 3 clefts. Just given them their final pressing and OH B B BABY!!!

Out of curiosity, why is the heartwood usually aways on the left hand side?
-
Well it's more a coincidence to be honest as when I choose which end is going to be the best playing part of the bat it is my choice of how the grains look on the toe it just so happens that that's how it's worked. Now some people like the heartwood on the inside edge so that's ok for the right handers but personally I don't thing it makes a jot of difference. They all ping like a pingy thing from pingsville.
-
Out of curiosity, why is the heartwood usually aways on the left hand side?
good question
-
Yep was a good question sorry I couldn't give you a more scientific answer but I'm not a scientific kind of guy.
-
Yep was a good question sorry I couldn't give you a more scientific answer but I'm not a scientific kind of guy.
It makes sense.
The reason I asked was that I was under the impression that heartwood for a right hand batsman was best for the outside edge. So subconsciously whenever I saw a bat with heartwood on the other side I automatically disregarded it.
You are probably right that it makes no difference at all where it is as you should be middling the ball not edging it to slip.
-
Okay, I'm sweating now. Which is the lightest pingingest cleft with the mostest meaty ping? Thinking about the "quinto" project if you think you could tackle it.
-
Oh I have another question.
Are all the bats in the above picture the same size but different weight?
If they are and say one weighs 3.2 and another weighs 3.8 and I turnaround and I say 'Paul, could you make me a two bats that weighs 2.11 with those clefts. Am I going to get a 2 different looking bats? Will the 3.2 cleft look a lot meatier that the 3.8 cleft? And also due to it being less dense, I would assume it would be more springy and therefore perform better? also does the 3.8 being a denser bat last longer?
Or am I completely wrong.
P.S what do the number on the handle mean?
-
Krs well you are bang on the right track. If you wanted a 2-10 bat making out of a 3-2 cleft and another from a 3-8 cleft they are going to be different in size as you are having to take out more wood from the 3-8 cleft to get the weight down.
Springier as its a lighter cleft, no not in my opinion you could have a cleft weighing 3-14 and it will perform as good as anything else if its pressed properly it's just that the natural weight of the cleft is heavier.
Will it last longer? Well a very hard pressed bat will last longer but will take longer to knock in and in general the middle will be smaller but a cleft that is naturally harder doesn't need pressing as much as it has many of the properties already in it so you need to see that or feel that when you are pressing. Likewise an under pressed cleft will break up as its fibres haven't been pressed sufficiently to allow the willow to withstand the impact. You could press a bat by just knocking in but it would be a long process and I don't think would guarantee success.
This is the tough one now as bat makers are competing against ever harder cricket balls and particularly cheap balls made and sold for pennies. I have seen balls cut in half and nuts and bolts put in the middle core to make the weight up. This why it's getting harder for the bat makers because when people go netting you see people running in to bowl with a mixture of cricket balls and you can tell by the sound of them. So like myself, granted I have a lot of experience if I am in a net and I find a rock coming down at me I either ask them to change the ball or I just literally dead bat it so I don't damage my bat. You can hear the difference if you stand and listen. They should be banned really they are awful things

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
Only problem is now, when I order my next one from you I will be even more fussier! Lol
-
Dohhh!!!! :(
-
There is a lot of different theories in cricket bats and don't get me wrong I am still very much learning new things all the time but from all the years of playing at all different levels I truly believe that its down to the handles and the pressing. You could have the best piece of willow in the world but if its not pressed properly or have a good handle in it it ain't going to perform to its potential heartwood or no heartwood. The shaping is another part of it obviously but the pressing and handling is the first step really of the bat performing. Some may disagree but that's my view
-
Just wondering, if heartwood is supposedly a tad harder, wouldn't you have a slight difference in the pressing across the face of these clefts?
I'm thinking, feasibly yes but not enough to make a difference.
-
I'm not sure where it's meant to be. But it is where I prefer my heartwood.
Hence I've just ordered myself the grainy one on the left. Pretty excited to be fair.
-
As a right handed I do if I'm choosing a bat with heartwood try and get it on my inside edge as I find you do more damage when cutting as variable bounce etc. you would get more range from a cut shot mis timed the an outside edge on most occasions. Just my thought although it does look better cosmetically on my outside edge, not that I'm fussy lol
-

Firstly I have been following your posts for quite some time, can i just say it's always a pleasure reading your posts, I just love the way you take a lot of pride in what you do.
As regards handles, I have seen a few different types being used. Cork sprung, rubber sprung and a mixture of the two.
Some with two springs others with three. There are also differences in weight between the types.
Which type do you use in your bats and why. I'd be grateful if you could shed some light on the matter. Maybe Soulman could elaborate on AKs thoughts on the matter too.
T
-
The type I use are a rubberised cork at the moment that I have made. The last lot were rubber and to be honest there was nothing to choose between them to be honest. I think some of the best and strongest handles I have seen were in my old chase bats they had two rubber inserts running through them and they took a bit of loosening up but they were great. I don't know if its true but I heard they were made in England I think by crown. How true that was I don't know.
I feel having used and tried all sorts of different handles it is down to the quality of the cane that is used more than anything else. This is the interesting thing as I am sure that people have tried every type of material around and seeing as we are limited to using wood tried every species of wood too and know one has come up with anything that matches the qualities of the cane other than with a man made product.
This is something that intrigues me and I am probably treading over old ground but I am experimenting at the moment with different types of timber materials made up in different ways to see what we can come up with. I read somewhere cane is becoming a little harder to come by so it may be something we have to look at in the future.

Two grade 3 bats shaped up one with full spine and one our new shape. Just waiting for the stickers to be printed for the new shape and am very excited to get them as I reckon they will look great.
Both these will come out 2-12 dressed.

I fear my wife may end up killing me if you keep posting these photos!

Not tried making up a wooden tomb stone but if needed I will give it a go, what weight would you want it :D

Just been told my stickers are hopefully being sent out Thursday woo hooo!!! Can't wait.

There was a rumour that Yorkshire players used to like a Crown handle. The fella's dead now, though, isn't he?

I prefer unstickered.
-
A lot of people do like un stickered, I don't mind but I do think the sticker finishes it off nicely if done properly. Yes I think the guy from crown is dead now.

I've always worried that a bat-maker might be offended...

Well its nice to have the advertising on them from a business point of view but the customer is paying the money so if he doesn't want stickers he doesn't want stickers. Hopefully the quality of the bat will be advertising enough as people will ask about it. I find that a lot now lot of people see the bats and want to know where they come from as we don't really advertise majority of our trade comes from word of mouth.

Might not actually be good advertising with me using it!
You used Chase bats when you played for Derbyshire, Paul?

Both obviously if you have the bat you will need the stone
-

Yes that's right. I started with gray nicholls and was with them for 2 or 3 years but a lot of the general Joe Schmo players got the elbow when the World Cup came over in the 90s and it was all last minute so had no sponsor but luckily robin smith sorted me out as I used to get on well with him and at that time he chatted about going to Hampshire so was good to me and I obviously thought he was a legend which of course he is. Should have gone really but loyalty was to Derbyshire. A good and a bad thing in some ways loyalty, it's not always reciprocal. There's not much of that these days unfortunately.

I regret that I missed your career, Paul. Not just yours, but everyone else's in that era. :o

The new shape at 2.12 looks awesome. Can't weight for mine to be made. Excited!

You didn't miss much by not seeing me. :D.
My fielding used to help me a lot as gave me a bit of an edge over others. But I was in and out depending on if the internationals were playing as we had a load of them at derby so it was tuff for a young guy trying to make his way then we had Malcolm cork defreitas. I had one great year in 99 where I got capped having taken 50 wickets from mid July, I had been out with a displaced fracture of the ribs should have been out for 12 weeks but they had me bowling in 3 as everyone was injured and it gave me a chance to open the bowling week in week out. Was a very memorable time and will stay with me forever
-

I'm on a roll at the minute we are busy but had two at the same weight so got them shaped up together in effect they will sit with oil on for a few days now

Hi Paul,
Apologies for the dumb question; I'm pretty new to the forum and to your brand, but is your 'new shape' the top bat, with what appears to be a mid/low middle? Both look utterly stunning at any grade, let alone Grade 3!
Cheers,
Ian

Our website is currently being redone for 2014 so what is on there at the moment is going to change. We are making the silver sovereigns into the shape with the spine down to the toe, the gold sovereigns are going to be a similar shape to the silvers but the spine won't run to the toe it will be blended out the supreme range will stay the same and our new shape which I haven't revealed the name as yet will be another addition. What we are doing is making every shape available in every grade so it will be players grade, grade 1,2,3 and butterfly. Hope that makes sense all will become clear soon as when the new stickers come for the new shape I will show you the pics instantly. And we will do junior sizes from size 4 up in all ranges too
I hope this idea will give all you guys a greater choice of shapes and a full choice of quality willow in your preferred price range.
-
do you have anymore that are up for sale at the moment in a cleft form ?
-
Hey yogi how's you all good I hope. How's Boo boo not seen him since the 'pic-a-nic' with the the 'yes sir mr ranger sir' :D
No we are not selling just clefts to individuals I am afraid at the moment as we are so busy that our demand is too great which is good for us but not the answer you were looking for I am afraid
Paul
-
Hi Paul,
any of these Grade 3 bats left/available?
-
James we have plenty of grade 3s available
-
Thanks Paul.
Are they made to a stock shape, or are we able to have some input?
-
Well we have our set shapes which you see plenty of on here and which covers most bases now to be honest. Obviously you have some Input in what you want but we won't start putting scoops in or anything extreme.
-
Couple going out on Monday. Both grade 3s one has a full spine to the toe the other is the same shape really but with the spine blended in towards the toe.

Hi Paul,
Are these grade 3 bats a available for a limited time, or will they still be available in the new year? I'm in Aus until the new year and would love to order one when I return in time for nets
Cheers
Dom

Dom
They will be available after Christmas but they won't be at that price this is a special offer till Christmas as we are changing the format of things for 2014. The butterfly stain bats will be at that price still
-
The bat above on the right looks a beaut, if you anything like that in the future I'd be keen to take one off your hands

We will have 4 shapes now for 2014 so have plenty of scope for everyone and obviously things can be modified a little
-
I think it would be great if you could get side-on profiles of the shapes for comparison Paul as it's extremely hard to see from the images on your site. As a prospective custom er, I'd definitely want to see that :-)

The new website is being sorted as we speak :D.
-
And stickers? You mentioned they'd be in yesterday ;)
-
No the stickers were hopefully being sent yesterday from their end so not heard anything as yet. Don't worry I'm awaiting in anticipation myself and a couple of lucky people are waiting their bats to adorn the said stickers on their bats right now.

Looking forward to seeing the new site. Is it going to be responsive?

How do you mean responsive

Can you resize the website so it looks good on mobile devices/tablets as well as a standard desktop. I'm a web designer so apologise if this sounds like waffle, but mobile devices/tablets now account for almost 50% of all web traffic. If you have some analytics software monitoring your site (Which you should do if you're looking to sell online) you'll be able to see who is accessing your site with what device. Long story short = you need to make sure your website looks/works great on mobile platforms.

I must admit its not something I have looked at at the moment but has crossed my mind. It is something that we will have to look at at some point but as I have said many times before we fit stuff in with our small budgets as for me the investment into the quality of our kit is number one on the list.

Totally understand, but it IS important going forward. If you need any help/advice let me know. More than happy to help.
