Had a very good afternoon at Millichamp & Hall today. Picked out some lovely bats, including a couple of CK22s for pre-order customers... I have taken loads of photos, which will be added to this thread when I get back, along with my commentary of the afternoon.
I understand another forum sponsor is going there tomorrow, so apologies in advance, Asad, for picking out the best willow! ;-)

No worries Paul, is it worth going or shall i not bother and go there some other time when they have more bats. i am only interested in CK22

Well, there's not that much to choose from now! If you wanted other bats I would say still go, but the CK22 are few and far between now. It's going to be a very limited edition bat I think... P.S. Get well soon!!

Arrived in Taunton on time - for once, there were no delays on the train! :) Travelling by train meant that we couldn't take any bats back with us though... :(

Taunton is quite a nice little town I think - always nice to get out of the big smoke every so often! :) These were on the walk from the station to M&H...

And five minutes later, I was there. The dogs provided a warm welcome, as always! :)

After a tea and a coffee, and a bit of talking shop, it was time to pick some bats! The bat makers had kindly put aside some for me that matched the specs of our pre-orders, and other bats we wanted in stock. To be honest, most of what they'd set aside was really top drawer, and the CK22s really stood out for me (ruler straight grains, no heartwood and very thick edges), and as for the stickers, well, I can't get enough of them. You need to see them in the flesh! :) I asked about the thinking behind these stickers, as I've heard feedback from some that they are a bit radical for M&H and not in keeping with their traditional branding and image, but they said that they had actually evolved naturally from the original stickers, and seeing the two bats side-by-side, I could certainly see what they meant! Incidentally, we decided to take the retro one, which is the same shape as the Solution/Original Low, but with those "old school" stickers! :)

This was a (rather special) Harlequin, that I first saw at the Lord's Trade Show (as a sample bat). The day after the show, I asked our M&H rep if he could reserve that bat for us and he kindly agreed to it. 24 grains, no less, and it tipped the scales at 2lb 7.5oz! :)

And a couple of individual shots of that retro Original bat - I do really love the stickers on this... :)

I was told that they had some very grainy bats in a heavier weight, so asked to see a few such bats despite them not being on our original order, and amongst them was this Amplus, which is 2.13 and a monster off the mallet, so I felt we should add it to our bounty! :)
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHVisit15_zps77b46d1e.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHVisit15_zps77b46d1e.jpg.html)

We then went downstairs and I had a look through all the bats in the shop, not wanting to miss out on any gems that may be lurking there! I felt that what was left in there wasn't quite on a par with what the guys had set aside for us upstairs, and to be fair they had warned me of this, but I still ended up adding this Harlequin and Solution, both of which are 2.8...
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHVisit30_zpsf1af5054.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHVisit30_zpsf1af5054.jpg.html)

And then, having finished picking all the bats, it was time for a wander around the rest of the shop. I learnt that the CK22 softs aren't available yet, but will be in mid January. I tried them on and was very impressed. The wicket keeping gloves, in particular, felt extremely comfortable and very supple, and I can see why CK likes them! Can't wait to get these in stock in the new year!

This is the (infamous) clearance bin, with all bats suffering from a defect of some description, often storm damage - still looked to be some lovely looking sticks in there though, and possibly some bargains to be had!

I had a train to catch and, unfortunately, ran out of time, so didn't get round to seeing the workshop, but did take photos in there the last time I visited, and I believe these are up on a previous thread (and our Facebook page), if anyone wants to take a look...
All in all, a very fun afternoon, and I highly recommend a visit should anyone be in the Taunton area.
Finally, I apologise for the image quality - all these pics were taken on my BlackBerry, which really is on its last legs now!! :( :-[
-
very nice looking bats. i quite often have a look around the shop when i visit the ground as i dont live far away.
the clearance bin always seems very popular
-
Last time I was down there the dog was just a puppy...time flies!!
-
Any company that has their dogs at work is onto a winner!
The CK22 is growing on me the more I see it, and that 24 grain harlequin in such a light weight. Why does this happen so close to Christmas :(
Just off to sell my car and a kidney, will make an offer on some kit when I'm back, Paul ;)
-
I think your preorder customers will be delighted.

No need to worry, mate - that Harlequin sold minutes after the rep told me he was reserving it for us! You will have to consider one of those CK22s instead... :)
-
Has anyone ever bought an M&H from the clearence bin? If so, how was it? How long did it last etc?
Top work Paul, wish I had the funds!
-
Excellent selection of willow. The CK22 look topnotch :)
-
Love those retro stickers.... Would have them every day of the week

Well, that bat is actually available as is, mate. It's a one-off Original Low with the old stickers. We will sell it for a similar price to what we sell the Original Low for, so sub £200...
-
great post paul. thanks for sharing. love the pics and the ck22 looks good.

Yea I have an M&H from the clearance bin, they said it had knots etc, it had one tiny knot on the back and 13 dead straight grains. They told me it was 2.9. When it after it was 2.15 and as it was an original low was so bottom heavy. I sold it straight on but tapped up well and looked good.
-
Sounds like you had a great day out, would love to have a rummage in the bargain bucket ;)
-
some stunners there !!love those ck22, what's the price of ck22?
-
£425
-
£425
Deflating....Paul is that going to be your price or is that RRP?
-
BTW just to add some of the best looking bats so far this season yet in this thread...CK22 looks like a top of the line bat for top of the line money
-
Yes, we had this confusion on another thread I remember. It's a £475 RRP and our price is £399.99.
-
Look forward to my beast arriving !
-
Expensive bats at M&H but you normally get a good one from my experience.
-
The bats look good as always from M+H, however the CK22 softs look extremely ugly.

I totally disagree - I think the CK22 softs look the best out of all M&H kit!

Bruce you want to get on twitter for that sort of stuff!

I don't understand any of it really - I can't remember my password for Faceplant, I'm too lazy to update Linked_in and it's full of beige businessmen trying to link with me and I've never been on Twitty - maybe I'll give that one a go.

I had to get LinkedIn when I started work so I could "use it for networking"
Every 3 months or so I connect with 1 or 2 people so I don't get told off for not using it, but it does seen totally pointless to me

After a short delay while the hard working folk at M&H knocked in the bats, said bats arrived in our store today. We packaged up the pre-ordered bats (2 x CK22 and the 24-grain Harlequin), and these have just gone out this afternoon. This is what we now have left over, starting with the CK22s:
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHBatArrival1_zps041e368d.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHBatArrival1_zps041e368d.jpg.html)

(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHBatArrival3_zps5f10f275.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHBatArrival3_zps5f10f275.jpg.html)
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHBatArrival24_zps2b76ac4b.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHBatArrival24_zps2b76ac4b.jpg.html)
Some people have asked us about the differences between the CK22 and the Amplus, so here is a profile shot, which should illustrate these:
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o538/ItsJustCricket/MampHBatArrival11_zps1e026a72.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/ItsJustCricket/media/MampHBatArrival11_zps1e026a72.jpg.html)

The main differences are that the CK22 has a flatter face, so thicker edges, and a chunkier toe, with the spine running down through it in a big way. The CK22 also has a slightly lower middle, but still mid-high.
Here's a special retro Original Low that we took. This is a bit of a one-off! :) It's 2.10 and just £194.99...

And now, onto the Ampluses. The one with heartwood is 2.13 and the others are both 2.9. The wider grained one has just been sold, but the other 2.9 (12 grains) is still available...

I'm in the shop today and I've been having a play with these bats and a knock up. All I can say is wow!!!! They all surpassed expectations and even better than last year's efforts. Personally my favourite is that Harrow. I don't think I've ever seen a Harrow with 38mm edges. It truly is a freak of nature! As for the CK22 I really like the decals and think they look even better in real life. They are some of the best looking bats we've had in the shop for a long time, certainly not to be missed, the perfect Christmas present!
The one thing you notice about the Amplus is how simply incredible the pick up is. We were asked to compare it to a few more bats by a customer and it is simply the best pick up I've ever felt. So balanced and feels a good ounce lighter then the stickered weight.
As for the Original with the retro stickers, it really is a one of a kind. Looks gorgeous on the shelf and performs well too, I will be sad to see it go!
This has been a lovely surprise to come into work and get to play with these today, they are simply too good for words. Come to the shop soon and you'll see what I mean or get them ordered now and they'll be under your tree in time for the big day!

What weight is the CK22 on the right?
It's 2.11, Jon - exactly the same weight as the H4L Hattori G1 you've just purchased! ;) :)
-
Some sweet bats there Paul. What weight are the CK22's that are still available?
One is 2.10, the other is 2.11, Vincent.

Hmmm... another salix or that M&H retro low!!! decisions...gosh darn it Paul...why do you have to do this??

Thought your Bubble would be enough! But if you order another bat by Tuesday/Wednesday, we can ship it together with the Bubble and save you about £25 on shipping... ;)

I'd go retro low, not something you're going to see every day!!

Hey paul, whats the main difference between the Original low and the Solution as the profiles look to be exactly the same ?

The toe on the Original is quite a bit chunkier, Zoheb. The extra two ounces has clearly gone there! :) It is the same profile shape though.

Could we see pics of both of them together please....really like to see the difference specially if they weigh the same.

They don't weigh the same. As I said, the Original is two ounces heavier. But will try and get some comparison shots taken tomorrow when I'm next in the shop...

Is the pickup any bottom heavy because of all the weight on the toe ?

I don't think it affects it really, Zoheb. It's very slightly bottom heavy, but no more than the 2.8 Solution that we have. Given the shape, the pick-up is ludicrously good! :)
Anyway, here is that comparison shot you asked for - sorry it's taken so long to sort this!

Looking at the photo, the spine on the retro Original seems to be a little more even, which might be one of the reasons it picks up so well...

The retros middle looks like it nearly extends the whole face of the playing area :O.

Thanks a bunch for this Paul love the Low shape...i still do not understand the main reason for the price difference between both the bats.
Is the willow quality and different as well to warrant the price of solution more than the Original Low.

Yep, the Solution is nicer looking willow. In my eyes, the Solutions are grade 1 and the Originals are grade 2, but I sometimes hear that all M&H bats are grade 1. It's a bit of a grey area, if I'm honest.
Original retro has been SOLD, but the Solution is still available...

It would be impossible for all M&H bats to be grade 1 as you can't just buy grade 1 willow on its own from any willow supplier that I'm aware of. M&H also have a Mk2 model in all ranges which would say to me that they only sell G1 & G2 willow but I can only assume that's there in house grading system that they use and not the industry guide from wrights etc.

The profile of the retro Original seems to remind me of ST Samuari, isn't it similar?

Agree 100%. It's a strange one, because they claim that all their bats are G1, but then also say they need to get G2 to get G1, hence what I said about the grey area - what happens to all their G2 clefts unless they make up these Originals / Mark II bats...?? Let the debate rumble on. I am not commenting any more though...

Either way the ones I have seen perform very well. M&H have always marketed themselves as a top end company so maybe that's why they only say they sell G1. They would struggle to command £300 if they said it was grade 2 and I think the Amplus mk2 is around the £300 mark.

We've just this evening shot the video reviews for both CK22 bats (SH and harrow) and, oh my god, are these bats performers! They may have even usurped the Tour as my favourite performing bat in stock...
I know mallet strikes can only reveal so much, but even if these bats strike the ball half as well as they tap up off the mallet, I would be blown away!
