Title: My 2 new b3 no stripe specials and Ryan and simmy tour
Post by: procricket on January 03, 2014, 05:03:36 PM
Well with my birthday around the corner and i decided to treat my old B3's to a refurbishment and a bit of a fix so i asked Forum legend Simon "Simmy" Ward and batmaker Ryan Kelsall down with my to the fun palace and see the guys at B3 and get a tour for the lads.

Once again Russell, Streaky, and office manager Rob looked after us impeccably and when called apon the busy Gavin was a great help and i must say he is one busy man and fair play to him and thanks.

After the lads went on the tour looking at things B3 Me and Streaky went over to the machine where i came across 2 bats handled and roughly shaped (one made for a retiring opening international bowler) and the other some custom design i asked what they where doing to Streaky reply there factory 2nds due to one having the tinest crack on the back of the edge(it did come out after it final sanding) and the other had a slight hairline crack on the shoulder.

I looked at the quality of the blades and although not a normal lover of heartwood though yes i will have them.

Streaky was reluctant and refused to name a price until i said there yours to sell fella so he made us both right down what we would both want and mine was higher so i got them for the lower price.

Anyway after a sand and polish and badging i think there very tidy sticks they tap up superbly well as standard and i think i have got myself a right bargain.

Here are the 2 bats

both 2-9 on the nose but pick up much lighter

both have 37mm edges at highes point

one has 9 grains the other 13 grains.

Both pick up lighter

One has a long handle which i was asked if i wanted to keep i did.

Pictures to follow

I hope Ryan and Simmy had a good day and once again i must stress i buy B3 because they make good bats i do not work for them or any other company YET.... They deal in good bats and i can relate to that and i love the keeping gloves too.
And cheers to B3 for hosting us

Rubbish company and rubbish bats!

Only kidding...thanks for the lads for the hospitality today and thanks to dave for letting me and simmy tag along.

I must say that I'm very impressed with the setup at B3 and everyone was very approachable and passionate about what they do.

There's definitely a place for machine made bats as well as traditional methods and B3 have merged them perfectly.

Can I please have my brown envelope now???  :o

It's a shame I use ridicolous big bats, they never have anything interesting in my weight when I go down.

Don't suppose my mates orange stickered 3lb trott profiled bat was there and refurbed?

£65, pads are £30-odd. Top quality materials and the gloves feel like you've used them for years as soon as you put them on...

Anytime mate had a net with these today i have to say i'm very very happy with one and the other could turn out to be brilliant too but one felt so right in my hand with my weird handle set up.

Cheers Tony and JB for the net that JB has some great bats too and Tony give your bats time mate they will be ok.

JB your a too modest you should get your bats up more on this forum the quality you have mate is great.

Very happy with my future"net" bats i think they will turn into my match bats as soon as the other 2 are finished

I'm not totally convinced about volume of wood although it gives you confidence.

The bat with the slight crack in the handle is going better than the Trott at the same stage maybe the pressing process are getting better and better.

I have knocked it in for around 15 hours and will keep but this"net" bat is turning into a very nice surprise...

You know that nothing feel when you middle one this coverage is insane and it is after i have cut the tp of the handle off and created my own handle top...

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/34/ktb8.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0yktb8j)

Will be interesting when the 4 get together which is used

Why did you cut the top of the handle off mate??

It was made for a massive Irish opening bowler who retired mate so i cut it down to short handle length mate.  It tapped up so well i have done it before so no issue mate adds to the balance i think with my special tape

Cheers, Dave! The B3's you had were best value I've seen! When I get the torque from lorimers I might post in the 2013/2014 kit section? I'll bring my Aldred on Sunday if you're coming

That's good to hear Dave, was a good net the other day! Despite batting like an idiot haha
I've seen the Aldred before and it is a beautiful bat, a little heavy for me but still it's a great bat!

Because i do not have much cricket budget i love great equipment but i shop on budgets and i want my best for my bats and feel it a system that helps and i will keep playing it in mate.

I do not buy as much as people think and i want to maximize my kit.

I feel a great satisfaction as well preparing my bats mate i knock all my bats in...

I use one till it can play no more then have another ready and ready the other two then just keep doing this...

I have never been a hoarder of bats Pads yes Bats are too expensive not to get the best out of

I might be being thick but is it possible I over knock a bat??
Could the extra knocking in spee up delanination as it's replicating the ball being hit??

As I said I might be being thick but is there any truth at all in my theory??  ???

I have a way of knocking in by gradual i just do not thump it.

It goes back to when i was a young lad i new a player who had 3 bats one he used and two he knocked in for a season then used the season after.
My very first b3 the custom one was only used in 4 games at the end of the season after the trott sustained damage so it came straight in and was ripe and still is.

I play 60 games possibly more this season so i always like 3 bats good to go in theory but was offered 2 so got them both.

The other b3 has had possibly 20 hours knocking in and over 1000 overs on a machine and has had no ill effect mate.

so how many hours with the mallet before you go to the machine? and then how many hours with the machine before you go to nets?
Title: Re: My 2 new b3 no stripe specials and Ryan and simmy tour
Post by: procricket on February 27, 2014, 09:40:48 PM
Good question I would say 5-10 hours before the go on the machine and depend on what I'm working on the machine.

I would say possibly 2 hours on a machine before I go to use proper balls.

However one of these bats I have not used yet other have tried it out like JB but I intend through the season to play it in.  With my other 2 returning the first ever production bat might be my match bat and I will use that in games till it breaks and just net with the others till a natural order is formed.

The first production bat has had to wait since Sept 12 and has only been used in 4 games but has had a full season in the nets and machine play so is more than ready.

5-10 hours, despite B3's knocking in service? that is some dedication! how hard do you end up bashing the bat towards the end of these 5-10 hours? for some of my bats, i've laid them down on a bed, and really given them a pounding with full force. not sure if it did more harm than good.

i hear ya.. so how hard with the mallet towards the end? lay it down on a soft surface, and give it a thwack like you're hitting something on an anvil? or is that too extreme?
Title: Re: My 2 new b3 no stripe specials and Ryan and simmy tour
Post by: procricket on February 28, 2014, 02:58:21 PM
It all personal preference i tend to go easy towards the toe not too hard i do not want it to split.

I have a technique involving a hard floor and a ball but that's not for a forum mate as bats can get damaged by it and i do not recommend it just i have always done it.

There is something rather therapeutic about hitting something regularly and hard with a hefty mallet.
A bit like bulling boots.

Both of which I really enjoy
