Title: What bags do wicketkeepers have?
Post by: thecord on January 10, 2014, 12:53:42 PM
Couldn't decided whether to put this in wicket keeping or other gear but only really applies to keepers so put it here, admin please move if you feel the need.

As per subject, what bag do the keepers out there use?
With the extra kit that we have to carry I tend to find that there isn't a great deal of choice for us keepers. I currently have an Ayrtek stand up which has been good in terms of size but the helmet compartment has ripped so I need to look at other options.

Can you keepers recommend anything?

I have a Cicada bag which is huge and more than enough room to fit everything in including at some points 2 pairs of WK pads and 2 pairs of WK gloves

I use the HitsHard wheelie which is identical to the pod pro. Fits all batting kit? Keeping kit, whites and helmet with bat cave underneath.

I used to have a massive gray nics bag, but what I found was the more space you have the more you carry.

I fit all my kit in a Salix duffle, then have a holdall for towel and clothes for after game.

I didn't think that bat cave would be big enough for you Chris!

GN1000 Wheelie bag. (My 2014 bag)

Slazenger V1200. (my 2013 bag, has been brilliant for me, but I am Gray Nics man so i am happy they have improved their bags)

I would also recommend the Aero Stand Up Tour bag, The Kookaburra Players, The Kookaburra Pro Combi and the GM Original Duplex.

Albion Duffle bag accommodates everything I need albeit very heavy

Failing that I'd use my Island XL wheelie or this massive Albion Wheelie, but both are too big for the car really and changing rooms, massive bags

The pod one wheelie, the best bag I have ever had by a mile

I use the b3 big bag fits my keeping kit in and 2 pair of batting pads and 2 lids and my bats and clothing

Thanks for the answers guys, which of these bags fit all gear inc helmet?
I want my bag to fit all the gear I take on match days and I'd rather arrive without an injury so needs to be on wheels thus ruling out the duffles!

Mine fits in everything I take including around 7 bats mate
And the lids x3 pair of gloves and my clothing.

I've got the Affinity Cricket Wheelie Bag...Think it's similar to the MH T1 in terms of design and dimensions. Three padded bat cave, fits pair of batting pads, pair of wk pads, two pairs of batting gloves, two pairs of wk gloves, helmet and two pairs of shoes plus other odds and ends....if packed neatly I am sure it can accommodate an extra helmet as well.

One thing we've learned recently, especially after doing all our bag reviews, is that you don't need an especially large bag to fit a full set of wicket keeper's kit in.  Pretty much all senior cricket bags are designed to take one of everything, including keepers' kit.  You can even get it all in a medium sized duffle.  I guess the issue is whether you have two pairs of pads, two helmets etc. or multiple bats, and if the answer is yes, we always recommend the M&H T1 or Newbery Tour as these are our personal favourites at IJC.

I'm clearly not packing my kit right if that's the case. My last bag was a GM original Duplex wheelie which I thought was a pretty large bag and I couldn't get all my gear in that, had to carry my lid separately. That was just 2 bats and one set of everything else too so nothing excessive

I'm currently in the market for a new bag as well. My existing bag is a Slazenger one that I've owned for the past decade or so, and it is still going strong, but I can't fit all my kit in now that I've taken up keeping again for the past two seasons (I stopped at 18, started again at 23). As it stands I can fit all my kit bar my helmet, boots, and clothes - and it is now at a point where I'm either juggling everything, or having to make multiple trips to-and-fro from the car, so it is time to make a change!  :D

I had a look at IJT's youtube reviews, some really good stuff on there. Currently my shortlist is down to:

Any thoughts on these bags? Also, are there any alternatives of a similar size to consider?

Ideally I'd like a bag with a helmet pocket, another for my boots, and perhaps one for clothing, but not against having everything in one large bit in the main section.

Also, I've seen some two tier bags. Are these bags worth considering?

I've been told that the T2 is probably not big enough for a keeper with all that kit and that the T1 would be a better bet.
The GN1000 has been getting some praise too

The GN1000 is another one I neglected to mention that should be added to the list, but Mike1989 has singled out all our favourites, so whichever one of those you guys go for, you won't be disappointed.

Ah ok mate, didnt realise they havent hit the shelves yet.

After a duffle to take to nets that I can fit some training kit in with as ours are ok for the essentials but need to pack cones/balls etc that are excess to the usual kit requirements.

The woodworm pro is similar but big for a duffle

Of the three bags mentioned, which do you think is the best of them? Which sells best?

Also, when watching the reviews the Salix bag had a bat cave with two slots, which had a zip covering it; whereas on the Newbery bag, is there just one slot? And does that slot zip up (didn't zip up in the video)?

Probably edging towards the Salix bag at the minute, but the Newbery looks nice. Spoilt for choice really!

Yep, just one external bat slot on the Newbery Tour, but I think it can fit two bats in.  If a bat cave is an important requirement, I would go for the Salix/M&H bags instead.  The M&H T1 is, by far, the best selling one of the lot, and probably my favourite too.  It stands up the best for me, and the suitcase handle is a massive plus, too.

I've just ordered one of Paul Aldred's bags that he has on offer at the moment (I think he has five left).  A double decker style wheelie bag at 90cm x 40cm x 40cm...it sounds promising.  My current Salix is 100cm long and is a pain to fit into most car boots!

I use the big Gray Nics Quantam. Picked it up in Lillywhites (I know, I feel dirty) and fits all of my batting/keeping gear in quite nicely. The only beef I have is that I often to have a couple of bats sticking out of the top compartment if I take more than one to a game...
Title: Re: What bags do wicketkeepers have?
Post by: Cumbrian Pete on January 17, 2014, 11:35:52 AM
My Aldred bag has arrived and it is absolutely superb.  An amazing amount of room for the dimensions, the double decker system works well and the boot end pocket is nice and roomy.  I'm not sure how many Paul has left but I would recommend wholeheartedly.  He has photos on a 'Bags' thread on the Aldred section.
Title: Re: What bags do wicketkeepers have?

Does it have separate bat compartments mate or do they just have to go in the main section?

No bat compartments, but lots of room in either of the main double decker sections.  Paul has these on at £50...an absolute steal.

Mine only lasted a year, Liam, and then the zips went.  I think your old team mate, Jimmy, had the same problem with the same bag!

I think you're right, he did, those Tomahawks he got from you were lovely btw! mine's not holding out too badly but it  started getting holes in the end, that's mainly due to dragging it all over London though. I don't drive to games so sometimes it gets pulled/stood up/dragged for a couple of hours at a time. If I could fit all of my gear into a duffle I'd be a very happy man.

Satying on topic, has anyone ever found a duffle they could keep everything (keeping gear included) in?

Paul - i'm playing out here next season (knee injury permitting) so wil tap you up for a set up!

You can fit it all in the GN1000 if you are organised with it and have just one of everything.  There are a few reviews of that bag floating around here, and numerous owners already who I'm sure would be happy to tell you about their experiences with it (all of which seem to be positive so far)! Sadly Gray-Nicolls are out at the moment so we can't replenish until further notice!

The GN1000 duffle fits all my batting gear along with 2 bats, keeping pads, 2 pairs of keeping gloves and several pairs of inners.  It would be a struggle to fit in whites and towel etc. on match days but for just carrying equipment it's pretty perfect I reckon.

I think all wicket keepers should consider the Salix Pod Allkit bag.  It's really, really good.  If you prefer the idea of a stand-up bag, we recommend the M&H T1, but if you don't mind about it not standing up, this bag is hard to better in our opinion, and this video shows you why... I have the Allkit and I'm not a keeper, it's HUGE, more like a bungalow!
Even stuffed with all my match kit and whites + extras there would be room for keeping stuff

It's a shame it doesn't stand up, looks like it would take up too much space in most of the changing rooms I play at

You have a good point there...
It takes up about 1/4 (slight exaggeration) of the home changing room but granted it is essentially I jazzed up shed
Also it's only just fits in the boot of any cars, hence why I bought the GN1000 duffle from Vitas :)
