Title: Base Layers
Post by: imran75 on January 17, 2014, 03:18:07 PM
Afternoon chaps.

So, base layers. Do any of you use them? I've been using the Canterbury Cold Gear top for a couple of seasons now and it's in dire need of replacement. Whilst I've been happy with the warmth it provides on cold April days, the fit leaves a little to be desired - the arms tend to be a little on the short side for me, and I'm not exactly a gorilla.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

ta!

The Under Armour cold range is pretty decent, nice roll neck collar too.  I've used one for three seasons now and the sleeve length seems fine.

I use them at cricket no matter the heat, midweek, Saturday, Indoor netting.

Used pretty much all the makes and can honestly say the best ones i've used and are currently using are these

http://www.sportsdirect.com/sondico-base-layer-top-mens-427026?colcode=42702608 (http://www.sportsdirect.com/sondico-base-layer-top-mens-427026?colcode=42702608)

They are brilliant, fit well, are comfy, keep you warm/cool when needed. They hold there shape after many many washes and don't stretch like most others do.

and at £13 are a bargain!

I did look at those but wasn't convinced that they were any good - I guess the price point put me off! Well, for £13 they're worth a shot I suppose! Cheers!

If you are in need of tights, I can recommend the Kooga (rugby brand) tights
Less than 20 quid delivered
As good as Skins

No problem, Imran, I find Under Armour gear in general very good, washes and keeps in shape well too.  The blokes on the website are huge, though, I don't look like that when I wear mine!

I'm using a Nike long sleeve and Adidas short sleeved one from sports direct at the moment.
Nice and cheap and do the job.

Can advise against the kookaburra ones as the arms are too short and will say the woodworm ones are alright if a bit thick.

Can't knock this stuff. I have loads of it in various colours for training.

I wear skins ice for matches.

Can't go wrong with the Skins A200 range, or the A400 if you want something top end.

A400 is really premium! I have A400 sleeves and they are incredibly well made BUT even they cost me £30!

I wear Under Armour Heatgear. Works a treat!

But Jakeus - isn't working out the size of these a bit if a nightmare?

If I wish to look like a silken orb in my skins, I at least want them to be the right size.

Thanks for all the advice chaps! much appreciated.

I went with the Under Armour in the end - mainly because I found a place doing them for £16.99 (http://www.mandmdirect.com/01/details/UJ459/Under-Armour-Mens-Cold-Gear-Blitz-II-Compression-Crew-Top-White (http://www.mandmdirect.com/01/details/UJ459/Under-Armour-Mens-Cold-Gear-Blitz-II-Compression-Crew-Top-White)). Seems they've only got XL and XXL left now though....

I popped over to Lillywhites on Friday night (rock and roll, I know) and they had some pretty good reductions on Nike Pro Combat Heat Gear. Down to £20.

thanks again!

I have a Canterbury one which i found thicker than a Skin (which i got free for subscribing to AOC). The Canterbury picked up colour easier than the skin and has gone a bit grey

Yeah my old Canterbury has gone a bit grey too...plus all the decals/stickers/labels have fallen off. Basically it lasted 2 seasons before going a bit manky.

You got yourself a bargain with the Under Armour, Imran, I'm sure you'll be impressed with it.

What's the best to wear in hot weather (to keep me cool)? I'm off to St Lucia on tour so thought it could be a good investment.

In my opinion a base layer doesn't keep you cool more than it makes you feel a bit more comfortable in the heat as you aren't bathed in sweat and your whites aren't clinging to your body. The cooling effect is negligible. I wear the Under Armour stuff because the fit is best on me.

Enjoy St Lucia, it is a fantastic place. Piton Beer goes down very easily.

Hmm thanks very much. If I'm honest I doubt them anyway. Surely in the end it's another layer, but I get the sweat reduction aspect.

Yeah I'm really excited for St Lucia. Never been to the Caribbean before and hopefully will get some good cricket in!

I wear Skins A400 long sleeve and A200 tights, they keep me marginally cooler, protect me from sunburn and I pull up alot better the next day

I now use Underarmor, Cold or Heat versions depending on the weather conditions. Their website has a clearance section which has really good discounts on it. Of all the skins I've bought UA have also stood up best to washing, they get used for rugby aswell so go though some heavy washing cycles.

My current base layers are an UA cold gear that I've had for years. It certainly keeps me warmer during the cold days but it puts me off with the turtle neck. Not very crickety IMO! For those hot days I go with ND baselayers off of Ebay. Was a gift and can't floor them, maybe a little bit smaller on the arms after stupid amounts of time in the wash and tumble dryer but stretch them out after use.. certainly a cheaper option.

Ive currently got my nike hypercool pro combat short sleeve and a white long sleeve.I wore the short sleeve so far last season and was very impressed with it.Ive tried the long sleeve on at home and the sleeves do seem to be a little loose. Ive got a few adidas powerweb techfit knocking about somewere. The vest and long sleeve. The long sleeve was perfect except it was a turtle/mock neck which irritated when I had not shaved

I'm a huge fan of Skins, haven't found any other brand that keeps you compressed as much and I've tried Under Armour, Nike, Adidas and some others.

Just ordered a fresh medium a200 short sleeve for the new season as my old one is getting a bit scruffy, excellent offer on Amazon has them For just under £24 with free posting which is £15-£20 cheaper than anywhere else I've seen ever! If your an x-small or large it's less than £17.
