Hi Guys,
What do you make of these shoes? It looks like a clever concept and I like the look of them. They aren't available yet, so I doubt anyone has worn one, but they will be available in three weeks, and we're interested on stocking them...
http://w3-footwear.co.uk/ (http://w3-footwear.co.uk/)
Anyone have any knowledge on their background/origin/place of manufacture? I'm intrigued by this company! :)
Cheers,
Paul

Look like spiked up trainers to me. The customisation is quite cool and the suggestion of pink shoes does appeal.
Edit, upon reading their blurb, it seems a more streamlined version of spiked up trainers is exactly what they are going for.
They offer a 6 month warranty, which is the absolute minimum required by law I believe, doesn't inspire too much confidence.
All I can think of is the 'Wilson' brand when I look at them.
Can't look beyond Nike if I am honest, Asics and Adidas are very nice too. New Balance match W3 in terms of price, but as no-one at NB wants to reply to emails or help me on the phone in terms of telling me when our stock will turn up, I am starting to wonder if we should even bother (Not so subtle message to any NB staff on the forum to pull your bloody fingers out)
-
We will be stocking them. I have tried a pair and they are very nice, comfortable and light. I have worn spiked trainers for the last 20 years and these compare well with anything I have worn.
-
The idea is a good one but for me these look dreadful and cheap.
They've been hammering the social media and have obviously got some interest so fair play to them. Will be interesting to see if they look any better in the flesh
-
They book apart from the logo. Looks stuck on as an after though rather than incorporated into the design of the shoe.
If they were Cheaper than the competitors I'd consider them. If they were same price as a brand I know I'd be hesistant
-
£60 RRP actually makes them cheaper than NB and all the other footwear specialists for that matter...
-
There website only shows the blue shoe. Ad the customisable options are only laces and a name.
There site say "we are working on options for 2015" which to me mean that's your lot for 2014?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the blue shoe is nothing special, and is all they offer.
It's not a launch that has me saying wow. I want those. Because currently I don't.

Mmmmmm... :o
For me the aesthetics let it down and it's an important factor in shoes, cricket shoe or not. The pic looks ok here but on the website in a smaller size (ie zoomed out), it looks pretty average.
-
Another Ian Wills project. Does he still run Vantage?
Doesn't he own vantage and merely franchise the name out? Last time I heard he was back in charge, and there was some issues a foot.
Not sure the state of play now though,

Correct, this is their only off-the-shelf shoe, but at least it's an affordable price for most cricketers. Also, not every company has massive start-up capital and so can't invest in four or five ranges like the big boys...

Appears he did, but seems as if he runs it now.

Has anyone got any proof of this?
-
Proof that Ian Wills is involved in W3, I mean.
-
W3 and Vantage websites do share a lot of similarities...
-
Has anyone got any proof of this?
I'd say this May be a hint.

A hint, but not exactly proof.
-
W stands for wills?
-
Could be co-incidence but Ian wills website and w3 website were built and are managed by the same person.
-
Someone with the ability to search company details, and domain registry details needed.

Let me stress, I've had a couple of smooth & fine dealings with Ian - but just putting the background out there for those who want to make up their own mind.

Tom has a lot of inside knowledge of the industry and on this occasion I'd tend to believe him...
That's just me though. :D

@ianwills88 = founder of w3 footwear

Yes Ian started the company but has since sold it.

Yes Ian started the company but has since sold it.
Websites still registered to him which is a bit weird then, is he kind of letting someone else run it like vantage then?
-
Look like knock off pumas too me in colour scheme.
-
Regardless of who owns/runs the firm, They look dreadful.
-
I have heard from the horse's mouth that Ian Wills no longer owns the business. He sold it recently.
This thread has also served a very useful purpose. Usually in my experience, if the forum doesn't like a product / doesn't think it will sell, it ends up flying out the door. As you guys don't like the shoes, we are certainly going to stock them now!
-
They sponsor Kevin o Brien of Ireland and a few club players in northern Ireland. I quiet like the design

Speaking off, when's the second shipment of hammers blacks arriving seeing as the first lot sold out so fast?
-
We have one now, Chris. It was sold, but the customer returned it: http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/cricket-bats-c17/senior-cricket-bats-c18/hammer-black-edition-cricket-bat-p836 (http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/cricket-bats-c17/senior-cricket-bats-c18/hammer-black-edition-cricket-bat-p836)
New shipment due to arrive around the end of the month.

I was thinking the sort of trainers you got bullied for if you wore them at school back in the 80's, a Gola or Nick's maybe, but Tesco is another good shout!
Hope they do sell well, plenty of sledging material ;)

Can't imagine any Pro players using them....
Except Faf Du Plessis as his choice in kit has been very questionable recently ;)

It's only 3 of us slating them and I'm sure you will sell some, everybody has different tastes and some people will like the idea of a more running shoe then cricket spike approach :)

Haha love the confidence! Have you seen the actual product then Paul or are you going off images?
Might be a subject for a new topic but what other products have been rubbished on here but sold very well for you?
-
I have seen them, touched them and tried them on.
Very nice cricket shoes.
-

Anything made by Hammer and, to a lesser extent, Affinity. Oh and New Balance softs too...
Technically, I am not committing to the order until I've seen them in the flesh, but unlike a lot of others on here, I have confidence in them.
-
Not surprised by Hammer and Affinity but maybe NB softs. I guess they aren't offensive just maybe a little plain.
Will have to remember to revisit this discussion after the 2014 season
-
To revise my earlier post, please can nobody read anything into the phrase "made by Hammer". Perhaps not the best choice of words, but hope you know what I mean! :)
-
Too much mesh for me and in such a bright colour scheme. All that's missing is the Velcro fastener instead of laces
-
It looks decent, wearable and similar to Puma in colour scheme. I like the concept that led to incorporation of mesh and is a good alternative to spiked trainers. The price bracket and the competitors it's likely to come up against would affect the sales. I hope these shoes really does what it says on the tin.
-
Just out of interest what cricket shoes do you currently wear Garret ?
-
I think they are too loud - like most cricket shoes nowadays.
-
They're disgusting! Saw them on twitter a few months back and look like they have a connection with Peter Trego or his brother down in Somerset? I like the concept of the spikes trainers but I think this would be better coming from either nike or asics doing a limited run of their top selling trainer spiked up. Such as the Nike free runs or Asics Gel Kayano
-
I think they look gash, but they will probably sell, personalised footwear has hit football ridiculously because you wana look like the pros, I bet if someone set up a way to personalise the big named spikes you'd make a killing.
-
Id imagine pro direct already do as they manage most of the printshop footballers boots for personalisation.
-
I really don't like the look of these. I prefer my cricket shoes to be mainly white and not look like I got them from Aldi!
-
Just out of interest what cricket shoes do you currently wear Garret ?
I've been wearing the same pair of Asics since 2008

Hi Paul
I think they look good, price is right, but nothing like trying them on.
Cheers
Mark
-
Am I the only one who thinks they look alright??
(But I was the kid who got bullied at school because I had Gola trainers so I'm not the best judge by whats already been posted here...)
-
I'd be more concerned that the designers knew how to design footwear properly, seeing nothing on the website describing how they do this. Wouldn't want blisters and for pain halfway through the first match.
-
Am I the only one who thinks they look alright??

Clearly you are one of the few who have any idea. Going by Paul @IJC's thoughts no forum member has any clue what they are talking about when it comes to cricket gear.
-
Think they look poor, are they really that good that they are going make people come away from Adidas/Asics/Nike/NB? Price may be cheaper but quality wise it will be interesting to see where they stand. Having said that Adidas shoes quality is poor this year!!!
-
Paul, you've been a little rude to the majority of forum members here, implying that they know nothing about what is a good product as every contentious item that you've seen on the forum has sold well.
I think you may have done them a disservice, as most of the contention has not come from the products rather the marketing, branding or communication.
Whilst many have picked up on the colour schemes for w3, I'd be very wary about buying footwear specifically without knowing the pedigree of the shoe designer, especially for more technical footwear.
Do you have this information from w3?
-
I personally think Paul's comments have been taken out of context. To me it was just a lite ribbing, based on the the fact the educated forum members tend to buy differently to the un educated cricketers on the street.
I personally didn't take it as an insult, maybe there's a few that are a tad sensitive on here?
-

It's partly tongue in cheek, partly fact. I have all the information I need on the company, where they are manufactured, ownership etc. and unlike others on here, I am confident in their quality. I will be wearing these shoes for the 2014 season myself, if the fit is good and if they prove to impress me as much in the flesh as they have in the photos. As I said in an earlier post, the confirmation of our stock order is conditional on this as well, so I don't feel my homework on the brand should be questioned publicly.
I am starting to see what fasteddie means when he says that going against the grain lands you in hot water on here! :o
-
Looking at the website and digitally altered photographs on their website, I see nothing saying I should buy them or even take a second look. What do these have above the specialists of Asics, Nike & Adidas? Or over the generic trainer styles from Slaz/Kook/GM. Even looking at the founders or current owners, I see no knowledge or experience in producing footwear which gives me great confidence.
I am surprised IJC are now so confident in them, considering yesterday they knew nothing about them and haven't even seen them in the flesh. But, both Bulldog/IJC know their onions so there must have presented some great compelling facts on what their plans are, and what the product is about - perhaps we may understand, and be more likely to purchase/consider them, if some of those could be shared with the forum and prospective buyers.
-
Tom. I don't know the science behind the w3 shoes but then again I don't know the science behind asics, Adidas etc shoes as I expect not many do. All I do know is have have seen them in the flesh, I have tried them on, they feel nice and look good which is not something that I have found easy to find in cricket shoes and hence why I have always had spike trainers.
-
I like the spike configuration for one - it's a bit different to most and likely to be comfortable and lightweight as a result. I also think the design on the sole looks great. It just looks well made too. These are the kind of shoes that can be worn by most cricketers, bar maybe pace bowlers and those who prefer bowling boots. Finally, I don't think a company would be as specialist as this without offering a quality product. This company only makes cricket shoes at the moment, so they can put all their time and attention into cricket shoes, unlike all of the big boys, where cricket is more of a side offering...
-
Fair enough, and I'm totally behind you guys if you think it will sell. Bulldog who has seen it is impressed, and that's more than a reason to take some notice.
I guess to me this shoe just looks like a generic Chinese spike, which all the major UK brands stick their logo on. Would this have any interest if there was a Kookakburra logo on it?
-
A mould for a trainer/Shoe costs a fair whack to make so a small brand such as w3 would share it with other brands as an "off the shelf option".
If you think that they have to come in the range of sizes + half sizes you could spend tens of thousands of $$ on the sole alone before even beginning to look at the upper. The design reminds me more of a squash shoe than a cricket design but until you see them on the shelf or in the flesh its hard to tell what they will be like.
-
Court shoes / tennis shoes make some of the best cricket shoes when spiked up. Trescothic has used Asic court shoes spiked for as long as I can remember.
-
Yeah id have no issue with that, the only downside i can see fro ma design perspective is the use of mesh for indoor shoes for ventilation where as outdoors you may end up with wet feet if there is still a bit of dew around.
-

I agree, although I do (sort of) like all the negative feedback, as I've said, it is nice to see that someone like Kieron is so impressed with them. If I was literally the only person on here who liked them, I probably would be much less convinced!
It would be funny if, after all this, I'm not impressed when I see them in the flesh! :-[
-
cricket in the wet Tom !!! never ......
Dont most cricket shoes have mesh of some sort ? certainly the new Nike and Asics ones look like they do.
I think that is why Trescothic always had court shoes spiked as the ones he uses are all leather and offer more support and protection than a trainer. Probably quite important as an opening bat !!
Are people quite snobby when it comes to cricket shoes ? I think we all are as I bet not many wear a Slazenger or Kook shoe ?
Yes Paul I think they are good. Im very fussy with shoes. Most of the Asics i find too narrow fitting. The adidas ones are too big and clumpy, Not tried the new Nike ones but they look nice. The W3 ones felt good. I would have to see what they are like batting in but they seemed excellent on first impression.
Both my kids have GM shoes (as they were cheap.....tight Dad) but I tell you they are fantastic shoes, very light and well protected which is just what kids need.
Again I bet not many wearing GM shoes ?
-
I've got a pair of kook spikes, very comfortable but I have bought a pair of asics for this season
-
Which asics JB and why the change from Kook ?
-
Having dabbled with a bit of county tennis back in the day tennis shoes are obviously designed with the rigors of stop/start and direction changes in mind and the appropriate support to cater for this. Obviously cricket when batting seeing a lot of these demands as well so makes sense to look at them.
I have used either asics or adidas for the last 8 years as when you think you would spend £70+ on a pair of football boots that you wear for 90 mins and you wear a pair of cricket boots for 5-6 hours at a time so makes sense to have something comfortable, durable and built to last a few seasons. The price of boots has risen over the years as everything else has done in the market.
-
I have a pair of gold 22yds that were £20 or so on eBay in 2010. I had some reeboks for years prior to that. The SD Slazenger ones will be my next ones I expect.
-
I think the rebook's were the last pair of "proper" cricket shoe I had (20 odd years ago) Great shoe, all leather and Alec Stewart wore them ..............
-
I have had slazenger and kook cricket shoes, even gn as I tend to sticker to cricket manufacturers for bowling. Not sure why.
But.
I and some nike tennis trainers that I had spiked for batting in that were excellent, but have found my puma spikes are actually better. So much I bought a matching pair of puma rubbers for the artificial.
-
I think the rebook's were the last pair of "proper" cricket shoe I had (20 odd years ago) Great shoe, all leather and Alec Stewart wore them ..............
Green stripe ones i liked the rubbers.
Not very fussy me about boots i do not like Addidas there too narrow i find and cumbersome i like plain Boots not much colour in the past Puma but not a big fan of Asics at all to be honest.
Might try to get a pair of NB ones if i can get them cheap but otherwise will see whats what.
These look and CRK boot the leading outsider feel be interesting to hear feedback on them after half a season or so..

These look great shoes, all white, light, flexible etc etc.......but why does nobody wear them ?

Did anyone see the red and black new balance hales wore today?
I'm wondering if there made for him by nb, or just nb trainers spiked.
And on that, if I trotted out to bat in red trainers in a whites match, would the umpire have a cow?
-

I would. They look top.

Great spot those Dave.
I also used to have a pair of 1/2 and 1/2 shoes back 30 years ago. I think they were the first ones every on the market. They had super soft leather uppers as well. Lovely fitting shoe but I cant remember who made them ?
Any ideas ?

Green and white colour scheme
I had some mitre ones when I was a kid with a fold over tongue like a footy boot.
-
no not Pony.
-
I used to wear pony, then puma boots, before finally settling on Asics strike rates, after the pumas fell apart. Have worn the Asics for four years as they are immensely comfortable (trainer like) and all leather, providing decent protection when batting.
I hate batting in mesh shoes.

i have a pair of these but in the rubber sole for the artificial and nets and a pair of woodworm that i wear in games.
i rememer my dad had a pair of pony spikes when i was younger, he probably still has them now as he doesn't play very often

I used them when they were called the original i had a pair in 2011 and a pair in 2012, they both broke in the same place after about 6 weeks.
I upgraded to Asics gel Gully 2s last year and never looked back, the Asics felt better, fitted better and lasted longer.
I'll use them again as bowling shoes this year and use my new Adidas Sl22 spikes to bat in.
I'd never use a spike from GM or Kookaburra again as they just simply aren't as good as those from 'proper' footwear brands like Asics, Nike and Adidas.

We stocked these last year, and they sold well. I love the look of them, too, but unfortunately, they offer very little toe protection, which was an issue with some customers. Will be interesting to see how the W3 shoes compare as they are not too far away in terms of price...
-
So how much are retailers going to be selling these for?
-
Do people care more for the protection side of their spikes or the look and branding? I'd say at least 8/10 would go for the later option.
-
For me, comfort and support as if I'm going to be bowling 10-14 overs per match, I am less bothered about looks. Which is why the Nike's are so appealing.
-

I agree... Without serious comfort and support your feet can be aching at the end of a long day bowling and fielding.
-
So how much are retailers going to be selling these for?
The W3 shoes will retail for £60, but we may sell them a bit below that. Either way, it makes them pretty much the cheapest option on the market for cricket spikes from a footwear specialist company...
-
Where's the research behind these? As in, what technology is going into the trainer? I would not go near them until they could prove the research in their trainer, who's to say they haven't just picked a trainer from tesco, used the same design and then put spikes in the bottom? I'm pretty sure these will flop.
-
I had those reebok ones when I was a lad. Loved them, they had some honeycomb blue sponge system which made them comfortable.
I had those reeboks too they were the best cricket shoe I had if they did those again would have. (only had non spike but comfiest by far)
-

They're only a specialist because they don't sell anything else.
The product itself is no more specialist than GM's or Kooks. It's a standard Chinese footwear mould, with the logo added by those who don't know anything about footwear.

Exactly, i work with footwear on a daily basis, these do not look anything special or different and there is no technology behind them.

No, it's not cheaper. If you go direct it costs £60, and this is one of the reasons we are thinking of selling them for lower.

Unfortunately they aren't available until March which will be almost at the end of our season so I will have to wait till next season.

I bought some of these from IJC the other day and used them in a match for the first time yesterday. Though i wasn't so keen on the looks myself, i decided to look past that and after yesterdays outing i found them really light and comfortable. It's very rare for me to come away without any blisters from the first wear of new boots. If you're in the market for a batting/fielding spike and aren't willing to spend the extra £20-30 on a pair of Asics/nike/adidas I think they're an excellent option.

couldnt get on with the asics i bought at the start of the season (too heavy, didnt fit) and had been using an old knackered pair of cheap kookaburras
