As the title, what grading would you give this?

It has 11 grains, no heartwood
-
3
-
grade 3 - nice grains but a lot of blemishes and what looks like a knot which are all just above the sweetspot. You shouldnt really be hitting the ball there but grading is done on looks.
If there was just that dark knot or just the other blemishes but fewer of them - grade 2
i'd pay £125 - £150 (depends who made it) for that bat and nothing more.
-
I'd be satisfied paying grade 2 money.
-
Definitely a grade 2 bat, or could be a performance grade

I did wonder when 'Performance' grading would appear as an option.
-
I'd be the same, would be happy paying Grade 2 money (obviously that could be anything from £100 - over £200 depending where from).
I'd say Grade 3 but it could be argued at Grade 2
Go on... who sold it as Grade 1... haha
-
It has grade 2 grains and the blemish would make it grade 3
-
grade 2 grains ........ grade 1 grains for me
-
grade 2 grains ........ grade 1 grains for me
On the right side they are but they are too wavy on the left side
-
I would say grade 2/3
-
On the right side they are but they are too wavy on the left side
I wouldn't call them "too wavy"
-
Take the blemishes out and I'd have it down as a Grade 1 personally - obviously it would depend on the state of the grains without the blemishes but they look pretty good from here
-
The grains I would say are easily grade 1 standard. It's what the blemish makes it. Here's a closer pic of the blemish

-
G3.
Too many blemishes for G2.
-
they are on the edge so not too bad but there are so many of them and given that grading is done on looks then the best that can be argued is grade 2. There is a knot there as well.
to compare ........ i have these down as a grade 2

Why is the first one grade 2? Looks pretty grade one to me.
-

big ugly blemish on it
-
the two little knots and one is in the playing area. A bat with any blemish near the playing area can not be grade 1 no matter how straight or even the grains are.
-
I'm sure that i have said this somewhere before.
There is no universal grading system. Some willow merchants grade differently to others. When these graded clefts arrive they are often graded again by the bat maker, and the bat maker will grade as they see fit. Other bat makers source directly and not through a merchant so just grade things themselves, everyone is using a different set of criteria. Some people take grade 1 to mean a totally flawless face with no heartwood, others allow heartwood and even very minor blemishes into their grade 1.
Basically it is all opinion because there is no standardised set of rules.
If I cut a 2 grain leg that is full of knots off my table, splice a handle into it and sell it as grade 1, it is grade 1 because I the manufacturer say it is. Whether it is a cricket bat or not is another thing but you get my point hopefully.
-
This is my bat, before I used it. Should I do a review on it? What would you grade it? Goes like a gun, but I have barely scored a run. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/01/4u4eququ.jpg)
-
Sorry for the resolution, has 9 grains, taken from my phone. Here is a better one. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/01/aquzyqep.jpg)
-
Grade 2 but only just. For me the grains need to be unblemished and ruler straight to make grade one
-
G1 - not in direct playing area. Maybe even LE if from the right company.
-
G3 and nothing more. Way to many blemishes so no way I would part with G2 cash for this.
-
I like the bat D7. Looks nice.

This guy should be in retail :)
(Joke dude) :)
-
I would be happy paying G1 money for that, because those stains are actually very hard from my experience and prevent damage, so your outside edge shouldnt crack at least :P
-
Looks fine to me - but I'm not a grain gatherer

Uh oh... That's like putting petrol on some people's issues :)
-
A grade 1 cleft may not make a grade 1 bat, you can't see the blemishes until you have planed the face....

So down grade it, not pass it off for more bucks

Agreed. You are selling a final product and if the final product is does not match the standards of the initial grading, down grade it.
Customer doesn't care for the row materials but the final product. The only exception here would be when a customer selected a grade 1 cleft himself.

Wow, I would feel pretty gutted if I bought a G1 bat blind and it looked like that, nevermind a G1+ Salix! How does she tap up? I'm glad I didn't go for one in the PDS crazy sale in the end, I would say for a £210 Salix, it's not too bad, but you bought the bat in anticipation of it being a G1+ stunner at a great price, not an okay bat at a decent price...

How much would you pay for it?

I'm not sure how this bat was graded as a Players which is meant to be amongst the best of their G1's...
I too am guessing this came from the Prodirect sale a couple of days ago. I'm glad I resisted also as I've always thought it's a risk buying bats from Prodirect since I'm based overseas. Good thing that it's a lot easier to return it if you are based in the UK.
Will you be returning it d7bow?
-
I hope she performs much better than her looks.
-
I've paid 100 for better looking bats than that.
Not sure it's worth >200.
Are you sending it back?
-

Totally agree Chadders. I was a tad disappointed when I opened the package, to see the marks. I bounced a ball on it and it pretty decent for a bat that needs knocking in as tapping a ball was leaving seam marks. The bat weighs 2-8 1/2 so that coupled with below expectations on looks, needs knocking in means I will send it back.
-
Very odd to see a Players grade Salix looking like that. I've got a Pod Performance that does have some similar blemishes but rather fewer of them. One question - is it a big piece of wood for the weight? Only asking because maybe that was a factor?

When the coast is clear I'll take some pictures and measurements as I'm not sure what a big 2-8 will be.
-
This is Paul at IJC's review - the bat that I bought is the one on the right, and you can see the very minor blemishes. Out of interest it weighs 2lb 7oz.

I went to bye the Salix players bat from pro direct but I had a email saying I had been refunded which I found to be odd but I shaw that if Salix graded it as a players it will play very well unless their was a error when the bat had the stickers put on as it's does look like a performance model

The bat that I posted earlier is grade 3/4, as kookaburra had 5 models that year (400 (mine), 600, 800, 1000 and players) it cost me $195 aud. I am thinking about doing a review, might post it soon.
