Title: Scuff sheet question
Post by: tushar sehgal on May 26, 2014, 05:59:24 PM
Alright, not your standard which scuff sheet is better etc. thread but more of what to do?

Purchased a bunch of scuff sheets, of a brand I have used before and liked, they all arrived and every single one of them has failed to stick to a bat so far (about 6 of them wasted). Basically when I peel them off the paper a lot of the glue is left behind on the paper and not enough on the sheet to stick to a bat, it leaves a horrible sticky/guey mess on the back paper / wax paper or whatever it is and does not stick to the bat at all (especially the edges). Tried using electrical tape to get the edges to stick for a week but still no luck.

Question is what would be the cause? and what can I do to the rest of them to make them usuable?

I have tried heating the them with a hair dryer, cooling them in the fridge, on an oiled bat, on an unoiled bat and no luck.

Not to sound fly but bin them and purchase better ones. They sound like ones I bought off eBay earlier in the year and were shocking. When peeling them the same things happened to me.some parts seemed over tacky then others.I ended up going to romida and spent a fiver on the helicopter sheet

I've never had a problem with the scuff sheets that have to be peeled off once.ie the paper/wax sheet.I always seem to have problems when you have to peel front and back of the sheets(hope that makes sense) they are usually the cheaper ones off eBay.

I could only liken them to when you get a screen protector for your mobile phone.Peel off one side, place down on phone then peel off the other side.Thats what the scuffs were like.Peel one side, place on bat then peel the top off.as I said ,....rubbish

That's exactly what happened to me, i bought a dozen set of scuff sheets, have wasted 3 of them, same problem edges are not sticking. I showed them to an expert who told me that these are exposed to heat so will not stick properly.

Cut them along the edge so they only cover the face, then put a strip of tape to cover some of the face and some of the edge?

Was this the shamrock ones?

Sometimes you just get a poor batch

Yes they are shamrock ones. I'll try the cutting the edges off and using the tape on the edges or just bin them all.First one was really good this might be bad batch

may be a dumb question but has the bat been recently oiled?

i have had issues in the past if the bats have been recently oiled.

As half of mine stuck i used masking tape to hold the other parts in place and it eventually stuck
If it has been oiled maybe a light sand to clear the oil resin

Hope this helps

Hey Mate, I've tried these on both oiled and un-oiled bats. Oiled ones had a 2-3 week gap between oiling and applying the scuff sheet

Probably something to do with storage temperature by the manufacturer/seller.
Same thing happens to Sellotape if it's old or kept in the heat

Yeah i have done similar things, still even try a light sand with like 320 or 400 grit paper and it worked better for me.

i bought a bulk load of nv scuff sheets, as they was cheap. non stuck, such schocking quality.

one i need to tape the middle and toe, and did this after applying said scuff sheet, its now all saggy inbetween.
buy cheap you buy twice!

i bought 10 helicopter ones of bulldog since, and 10 from b3 and havent had a probably with either, even on bats only oiled a few days earlier, all have stuck and stuck well.

I waited almost two weeks after oiling before applying the sheets.

I agree seems like they were stored in a very hot environment that have impacted/melted the glue.

I have also now bought the helicopter ones from bulldog. And those sheets are awesome. I mean really awesome.

Shamrock have promised to sort out the issue, these were not what I would call cheap sheets. I think just a bad batch. Thanks John for great service.

I bought a Gray Nicolls scuff sheet from IJC which arrived today. Having never applied one before and stumbling across this thread this morning I was pretty anxious about applying it but it went on a treat and was very easy to apply, it stuck instantly and even though I then stuck the edges down further with fibre tape, it probably wasn't required. Either way I'd use them again.

I do imagine that if they aren't stored in favourable conditions then the glue would perish. Also I had a ready meal a couple of weeks back from a well known retailer, one I have had hundreds of times before but yet this one kept me on the toilet with my head in the sink for four hours the next morning. Sometimes you just get a dodgy batch.
