since the ashes debacle there have been multiple efforts by members and on Twitter to select a team.
with the first test approaching I thought it would be fun to do something slightly different.
what team would you actually rather pay to watch?
Whilst sounding like a broken record, you need attacking batsmen to win test matches, having a team of blockers won't win you anything, other than putting off the punters.
So the England team I would actually pay to watch (not what I think will get picked) is...
Cook
Hales
Bell
Morgan
Ballance
Patel (better batsman than Ali, similar bowler)
kieswetter (Prior won't be fit)
Stokes
Jordan
Broad
Anderson
Who would you pay to watch based on those currently available (so no KP, who should be the first name on the sheet)
please no teams that say... cook Robson root bell ballance Ali stokes foster Jordan, broad Anderson (the probable team) there's nothing like enough flair to be fun to watch!!
-
This could be a good idea pay as you play basis on how much flair you side has,
Mine would be
Cook
Stoneman
Bell
Vince
Ballance (Sorry no Morgan)
Stokes
The Buttler
Broad
Jordan
Anderson
my team couple of tweaks but well worth a watch i reckon
-
actually this could work, you pay based on the flair the team has and then extra if the team wins!
Marc, nice team, always best not to agree with me!
-
Hales
Lumb
Bell
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Mills

good idea on the payment system but for your team, you have only got 10 players
-
Only in England....
1. Marcus Trescothick
2. Chris Nash
3. Ian Bell
4. Moeen Ali
5. Gary Ballance
6. Craig Keiswetter
7. Paul Collingwood (Capt)
8. Chris Jordan
9. Stuart Broad
10. Jamie Overton
11. Mark Wood

It's a funny old place this.
Not long ago that people were saying Bell shouldn't play or bell has to go etc etc
-

Reason behind picking only 10 was i couldnt think of another flair player i could pick, plus that team should score at least 400 so only need 10 men

Yes, but he's there for a good time, not a long time in Buzz's Neo-Slapfest setup.
Though I never called for him to be dropped...
-
I'd pick the team that wins the damn thing!
There is a beauty in being measured and clinical - as long as you're good at it!
-
If I were to pay a team then this would be my 11,
Vincent
Butt
Gibbs
Mishra
Cairns
Samuels
Arif
Westfield
Kaneria
Asif
Amir
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
-
Sreesanth as 12th man/mobile phone operator.
-
This is meant to be an England team ideally... but with a bit of scrabbling around to find a grandparent with a british passport, perhaps the net could be relatively wide!!
Oh and for a test match.
Not people you are paying to influence the result!!!
-
the team i would pick
alistair cook/nick compton
Micheal Carberry
Ian Bell
Eoin Morgan (c)
Joe Root
pete trego
james foster
stuart broad
chris jordan
James Anderson
tymal mills/jamie overton
-
Cook
Trescothick
Bell
Stokes
Buttler
Morgan
Rashid
Foster (wk, for his glove work alone)
Jordan
Overton
Mills
-
- Cook (as he is captain)
- Hales (for a bit of aggression, rather than real quality test-match-ness or maybe Robson)
- Ali (although would much prefer Trott - he might play a county 2s game next week at Stamford Bridge vs Yorkshire)
- Bell
- Ballance
- Root (could open, but might be better down order with Ballance and Buttler)
- Buttler (for fun, Foster for wicketkeeping)
- Stokes (if fit, otherwise Patel)
- Jordan
- Broad
- Anderson
Bit of youthfulness. Think Root and Buttler could make it interesting in the middle order. Plus some big hitting from Hales at the top and Jordan toward the end.
Everyone can bat around Cook and Ali.
4 seamers and a couple of part-time spinners (if Stokes is fit).
-
The team I would like to watch(on (semi realistic)entertainment/record value)
Cook
Root
Bell
Ali
Bopara
Patel
Davies(WK)
Jordan
Anderson
Finn
Monty/Mills(depending on conditions)
-
If England don't pick there best XI then I wouldn't pay, that means KP playing in my book. It happens to often now by the ECB, in the quest for money . I watched 15 overs of crap ODI cricket at Edgbaston last year while the England "B" fumbled around. No point charging top dollar for an average team.
-
I think you should be in it Buzz - you'd 'bloomin' well get on with it!'
-
I'd love to see a "proper" wicketkeeper in the side not one of these lads who's a good bat and can catch a bit.
With the emergence of Stokes as potentially a genuine all-rounder, plus Chris Jordan showing some real ability with the bat, this is becoming more of a possibility.
How about:
Cook (c)
Root
Ali
Bell
Taylor
Buttler/Hales
Stokes
Foster (wk)
Broad
Jordan / Panesar (depending on conditions)
Anderson
-
Cook (C)
Carberry
Trott
KP
Bopara
Hales
Stokes
Foster (wk)
Anderson
Finn
Rashid
EDIT: Scratch that if I'm paying I want KP, Bell-> KP
-
I am absolutely staggered that, when the concept is of picking a side you'd actually pay to see, EVERYONE has picked Alistair Cook as captain.
Lets be clear - he ain't much of a batsman to watch, but at least he is statistically effective. But he is without a shadow of a doubt the single worst captain in Test history.
-
And if I'm paying, and the side are still being picked to try and win, I'd go for:
Root
Cook
Bell
Pietersen (C)
Morgan
Stokes
Rashid
Foster (W)
Jordan
Plunkett
Anderson
-
i might be choosing a side i'd pay to watch, but i haven't suddenly been appointed as chairman of selectors. in that case, Cook is the captain.
-
good call on Plunkett
-
Something along the lines of:
Hales
Ali
Bell
Root (C)
Morgan
Stokes
Butler (WK)
Borthwick
Jordan
Overton
Mills
Might as well start to build for the future rather than the same old guard.
4 seamers, a leg spinner and Root and Ali as the back up spin options, why aren't I a selector?

I'm watching Cook captain a side with 3 slips and a short leg in an ODI, but he hasn't got a couple of short midwickets like Clarke or McCullum do so therefore it's still negative. ???
-
Cook
Carberry
Taylor
Vince
Bell/Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Borthwick
Jordan
Plunkett
Anderson
Don't quite see why people would be picking Hales when he's struggling to get in a county team :D.
-
Cook
Compton
Bell
Root
Taylor
Stokes
Buttler
Borthwick
Plunkett
Broad
Anderson

Alex Hales is our answer to David Warner. He was picked because of his talent and his state were told to pick him...
In fact Warner played for Aus without even playing first class cricket (T20 and ODI stuff).
god forbid that would happen in England
-
i might be choosing a side i'd pay to watch, but i haven't suddenly been appointed as chairman of selectors. in that case, Cook is the captain.
But if you're choosing the side - normally the job of the, erm, Chairman of Selectors - then its reasonable to assume you can influence the skipper...
-
Hales
Tresco
Lumb
KP
Root
Patel
Butler
Stokes
Trego
Jordan
Overton
Although, now Freddie is back I'll swap trego with Flintoff :)

I didn't ;)

I didn't ;)
Me neither!

There's beauty to all types. I would love to watch a nice grinding 'dig in' type innings now and again.
