Hello Happy New Year
A thought that has troubled me for a while is whether a sponsorship with a smaller brand like newbery, salix, woodstock etc would be a good idea. So now i need some new gear thinking wether a sponsorhip would be good (and by a bat as compulsory) or just by the kit from a shop so i can mix kit up. What do you all think to the idea.
Thanks
Harry

Think most of the smaller brands will put you on the "sponsorship scheme" if you buy a full set of kit. It's essentially a bulk buy discount.
-
Woodstock hand "sponsorship" out like it's going out of fashion (I got one just for enquiring about their range!)
Is it worth it - in all honesty no.
If you want to make your genitalia biggertell everyone you're sponsored go for it.
Just get stuff from a retailer. The 20% off RRP from the company is usually the same as shops charge anyway.

on your bike son.

They declined me!!!
-
Why do you think you deserve one?
I hit 1200 runs in 3 different leagues, hit most 6's in the club and probably the league.
Do I deserve one?
Probably not.
Don't believe the hype. Your county counter parts (I'm assuming you're playing county youth) may say they have sponsorship, but as said it will be a percentage off the RRP.
And who pays RRP??!!
-
We offer a players increment a ice berg effect ranging from 100 per cent to 10 per cent.
I think it is a good scheme it allows players discount or full sponsorship and our prices are good.
But what i will say is be original in your letter and remember where B3 not another brand.
People need to change this it is rude not too
-
oh god.. a youth that plays county..... must be good!!! NOT
-

I'm sure they just pick tonnes of kids so that they can sell extra kit
-

Bit harsh don't you think. The kids got to have some talent to be picked if he does play county or potential. As a men's cricket you may see youth county players as average but there playing the same level as you at probably half your age!
-

not a bad idea actually. Put as many people through 'county'.. then get your brand to offer them sponsorship... good little earner

And cost won't be an issue, as to play county as a junior you have to attend the right school, which is always an expensive private one...

You should be a retailer with this thinking!
-

I and many others played Junior county Cricket and my parents didn't have a penny to rub together and the coach ended up giving me a bat if your good enough you will get a go.
I tend to find people with this opinion tend to have been overlooked when there younger..
I and others worked hard to get in our teams like most kids trying
-

Stupid statement. I played junior county and the only thing my parents paid for education wise was piano lessons... Now that was a waste of money if ever there has been one!

I didn't play cricket when I was younger (Did however play Army U21's rugby and was at a league football club until 16 so I know enough about jnr lvl sports), however I agree that most of the people who go through youth systems aren't the best ones generally and either rely on being a) from the right school b) from the right club c) family connections and then comes talent. Looking at the guys walking around with 'county' kit.. most are pretty bad or nothing special. Obviously you get the rare one at some point who is seriously good. they are rare though
Obviously it's all just personal opinion and we all have different ones, it's what makes forums fun :)
-
I played half a season at Derbyshire when a junior and my parents were on the dole!

No just people irritate me with spouting bollox mate plain and simple. Different sports means different things people work hard to get a chance...
You talk with a air of you know what your talking about yet have never been there

Liam 100 per cent mate you know me pal not many love it like i do, and enjoy others loving it too....
-
That's it pal, you just see all these Young lads chasing a sponsorship trying to prove something.
It's not worth it, enjoy the game be happy and dedicated and you will play as high as your ability allows!

:D
Not going to argue with a 9ft giant.
Cricket is about enjoyment but ability
-
Very few players below county cricket get full kit sponsorship some manufactures /brands will give you around 25 percent off RRP( and players can then state they are sponsored) but not all some want you to become brand ambassadors you buy your kit and every recommendation or sale they get via you you get a discount when you want more kit ie the more inquires kit sales they get the bigger the discount you get.
-
Well I got more than a nibble there! :D

I can remember when i first started playing I was encouraged by of my two friends who played for yorkshire and I had no kit or whites or lift to our ground. Our coach got me my first kit.
Like Dave said you got to work hard an you might just get recognised an rewarded.
Ps. I used to walk 40 mins to our home ground with all my kit. If you're init for free kit you might be disappointed
-
I would love to run a scheme for under privileged cricketers it is something in my pipeline.
You see cricket kept me off the streets and out of trouble and taught me so much.
I owe the sport alot.
-
Yh same with me I've alot of kids around my area off the rails because they got nothing to do. I'm lucky my friends convinced me to play cricket.
Love everthing about cricket (can't wait any longer for the season to start )
-
good on you dave giving something back is the best you can do in the sport

very true, the newbery one only gives £2 off shop price when on the so called "gold scheme". i never said i deserved one either

are you having a laugh. you dont just get put on a county scheme because your from a good school/club there got to be talent involved hahaah
-
Be nce guys. A lad just asked a reasonable question and that is what the forum is for surely. However, forget sponsorship there is plenty of well priced gear around and you wouldn't want matching gear anyway, it makes you a target.

You're are right tht you need talent but I've seen some kids who have immense talent not being picked. Then you've got kids with half the talent on the scheme

Hello Procricket B3
I would suggest getting in touch with Cricket for Change part of the Change foundation . They bring cricket to the streets to the young who might respond well to playing cricket and about the side benefits of playing cricket brings to people. I learnt discipline , confidence self belief, playing as a team but self accountable . especially when I started to loose my sight .
I was taught cricket by a great coach I owe him a duty to pass on the love of the game to others who might want to learn . I passed my level 2 and now coach blind and disabled Children cricket . It is a truly wonderful game open to all.
Good luck with your plans

I'm 17 and played County cricket for Dorset up until U16s level.
You can't just walk in to a county squad and the standard of cricket I experienced was high, I played against Matthew Fisher (England U19 and Yorkshire player) at the 2012 Taunton cricket festival.
I used to ask around for sponsorships as at the time, I thought to be sponsored would be cool and obviously to say you're sponsored would have given me an Ego boost. But looking back on it I realise that playing youth county cricket doesn't mean you deserve to be treated like a professional player and proper sponsorship is an unrealistic goal. If young people want to write off it's their choice and if they get 30% off then good on them but to expect much more unless you're really good is just silly.
-
I can see both sides of this "debate" because sometimes it helps to be in cahoots via clubs, schools etc. but nothing can make way for hard work and discipline! For instance; my family have not had much money at all and it meant that there was the bare minimum in terms of kit and hand-me-downs to get by, state schools and external net sessions irrespective of weather kept us busy and away from issues surrounding our 'area'
But in order to progress, with quite a political aspect to the local county side- it forced my younger brother to move clubs in order to even get a look in. But even to this day he says that irrespective of moving clubs, the constant net sessions on the cold and windy days have got him to where he is in terms of playing. I mean 1st XI and county at 16 isn't too bad, and still doesn't worry about all the 'sponsorships' that his mates brag about... And although he was envious of all their top gear for discounted price (with our background in mind) I think he has progressed more without the 'hype' of a supposed sponsorship deal as it allows the focus to be more on playing than the latest blade.
I reckon that it does help having the confidence as a youngster that a brand is backing you... Although the majority is for retail boosts, but having a bat thats 20 per cent off doesn't mean you'll be smashing tonnes each week, the hard work you get in brings more back to your game.
So my advice to you @harry gamble is focus on your game and when the time comes that a company comes your way offering goods go for it then. A lot of the time a company will offer you a discount anyway if you buy it all from them so take it as you will.

If I was a small boutique brand I'd fire some gear at told harry gambles here.
If he turns out to be the next Ashton agar. You may end up with some Serious advertisement when he hits the big stage.

But where do you draw the line?
Does every young whippersnapper deserve gear chucked at them?

Assuming Mr Gambles is english it won't happen, the selectors will never even contemplate an Ashton Agar situation :(
-
What if Mr. Gamble is an opening batsman, there is absolutely no chance Cook will be replaced ;)
-
Think that the thing with the County Squads is that it does make a difference which club, school you go to and what contacts you have. But if you have genuine talent you will get in there....
I've played with loads of people that have been through the county system and when it comes to their senior playing career I don't think it makes a huge difference. Some will make good players, others won't. As for being sponsored, you really do need to be a good player....
-
Not all manufactures / brands are selective when it comes to discounts around May time last year a student of mine got 30 percent off the RRP over the telephone.
-
problem is the RRP of most kit is RIDICULOUS so a 30% sponsorship does nothing to bring it near to reality for most people.
Getting a £500 bat for £350 is still mental.

This! A teammate was part of the "Team Kookaburra" scheme a couple of seasons ago.
Even with his discount on RRP it was cheaper to buy the kit from virtually any retailer!
his (No Swearing Please) did get considerably larger and he was much more attractive to women because he was "sponsored" though!
-
Nibble! :D
ha good one

There's always curling? :)

ive been playing county cricket since 12 and still am now at 16. In my first few years i asked every brand under the sun for sponsorship's, you will get offers ranging from 10% to 50%, any more than that youre very lucky. But as you grow up you find that finding a retailer/brand that treats you with great customer service is worth 100x more than an unknown bedroom brand giving you £30 off a bat. And as you get to know them better you tend to get little bits and bobs for free and occasionally a little discount and i 100% prefer this. So find a brand/retailer, preferably local and build trust between you, if over the years you keep coming back both partys will be happy.
Can i add although there are occasional cases where over privileged children get placecs in county sides i would say 99% of the time talent wins no matter what school you go to, or who your dad is and this is from someone still in a state school :)

Your probably right with that and is what ill just do in the end, exactly my point in the second paragraph and why its annoying to not get picked for the a team
-
Redwood seem to be giving them out by the way. Two lads who come to the net have 'sponsorship' by then for this season and they are pretty avg. Worth a shot

The one I saw was distinctly underwhelming in my opinion, that said the owner wasn't out there long so hard to make a fair judgement.
Am I right in thinking they're made in Nottingham by a brand we all know on the forum??
-
I think they are made by an ex Yorkshire player.

Our lovingly crafted cricket bats start life in the South of England where the finest English Willow is selected by expert hands and eyes. They are forged in the North where a mix of traditional techniques and state-of-art processes are combined to create a range of unique profiles.
Nothing conclusive but I still think they made be CAD designed and made, that little description hints at it too :)

I've witnessed them being made.

I can say that in an average week we get 10 plus requests for sponsorship from club standard players. Who want a full 100% sponsorship because the brand looks good . When I ask the question what will they do for brand awareness the e mails stop.
In my opinion sponsorship needs to be for mutual gain for all parties not just about cheaper kit. Or am I missing the point here.
