Just saw this on cricinfo. Quite surprised and always thought he would get a chance to play for England when he was younger.

Used to enjoy watching this kid play, played in the right way in limited overs eg gave it a proper lick.
TBH his career was effectively over when his mate Tom Maynard died, he never recovered. The once youthful joy was lost forever.

So, not really a wrist injury?

The wrist injury has stopped him playing, but the death of Maynard perhaps ended his 'love' of cricket if you get what I mean.

If I remember rightly RHB said when he left Surrey it was because the place remembered too much of Tom Maynard.
All I can think of is being 27 years old and being good enough to play county cricket and having to retire. Feel for the lad

This is a shame that a young talented English player has had to retire. On a personal not played against him 4-5 seasons ago and as well as being a super talented player he was a great laugh in the bar afterwards.

Bit too much of one, from what we hear of his days at Slurry...

How many young sportsman in London earning a good wage wouldn't be? Not excusing it but can see the attraction and how easy it maybe to get sucked into it

pretty much the catalyst for the drink culture going on at the club at the time and a lot of the other "stuff" too. As a Surrey fan really didnt like him at the club second time around despite the success on the field as captain.

I'm pretty sure I heard a rumour last year that he'd been offered a pretty decent job at one of the banks whilst he was having a sabbatical from cricket. Either way doesn't surprise me in the least.

no, quite - his behaviour as a cricketer was way too close to that of a city banker.
-
I always find it quite annoying when people with that much talent make so little use of it.

not sure I know many bankers who live up to the reputation of being "a banker" these days, unless you mean working brutally long hours in a fairly stressful environment... but that is a side issue.
It is really sad to see Rory retire... he was close to being a tremendous player and when you compare the results that Adams and he got at Surrey compared to where they are now they don't look too shabby - even if, as a Surrey supporter, there was a nasty feeling for the culture and rumours around the activities of the players
-
Never good to see a young player retire early through injury. Never condone them acting the way the slurry guys did as they should know better as professional sportsmen.

Like a teacher then... Oh hold on, where is my 000s of bonus, company car, benefits...?!
Don't get me wrong, I am not moaning about being a teacher whatsoever - I love working with kids. However, the amount of sympathy I have for bankers is the same that I have for KP.
I agree to the point that it is much harder to be a banker now than it used to be but the bottom line is that it is still a well paid career for what the job entails.
On the side note of Rory, Tom Maynard's death was a hard one to take. Especially baring in mind that he was with him very shortly before he died. Injury or not, cricket is 50% mental and when the head goes, no amount of technique will sort that out.
