Used to enjoy watching this kid play, played in the right way in limited overs eg gave it a proper lick.

TBH his career was effectively over when his mate Tom Maynard died, he never recovered. The once youthful joy was lost forever.

The wrist injury has stopped him playing, but the death of Maynard perhaps ended his 'love' of cricket if you get what I mean.

If I remember rightly RHB said when he left Surrey it was because the place remembered too much of Tom Maynard.

All I can think of is being 27 years old and being good enough to play county cricket and having to retire. Feel for the lad

This is a shame that a young talented English player has had to retire. On a personal not played against him 4-5 seasons ago and as well as being a super talented player he was a great laugh in the bar afterwards.

How many young sportsman in London earning a good wage wouldn't be? Not excusing it but can see the attraction and how easy it maybe to get sucked into it

pretty much the catalyst for the drink culture going on at the club at the time and a lot of the other "stuff" too. As a Surrey fan really didnt like him at the club second time around despite the success on the field as captain.

I'm pretty sure I heard a rumour last year that he'd been offered a pretty decent job at one of the banks whilst he was having a sabbatical from cricket. Either way doesn't surprise me in the least.

no, quite - his behaviour as a cricketer was way too close to that of a city banker.

not sure I know many bankers who live up to the reputation of being "a banker" these days, unless you mean working brutally long hours in a fairly stressful environment... but that is a side issue.

It is really sad to see Rory retire... he was close to being a tremendous player and when you compare the results that Adams and he got at Surrey compared to where they are now they don't look too shabby - even if, as a Surrey supporter, there was a nasty feeling for the culture and rumours around the activities of the players
