Title: Some cricket bat nostalgia!
Post by: VKS on August 13, 2015, 10:31:41 AM
A customer came in with this bat a few days ago and it really made me smile. It's one of the classic bats from Gray-Nicolls, but I just can't remember when it was part of their range. If anyone can shed some light on this, it would  be great.

Secondly, it would be interesting to hear what sort of weight you think the bat is?

Wasn't this a late 90's - early 2000's model?

And the weight, I'm guessing it's about 2lb10.5

It's the bat Atherton used at the end of his career

On the toe will be a letter that will say who made it and the shoulder will have another letter to give the year.
Call/tweet GN and they will fill in the details.
Lovely bat.
2lbs 7/8?

I don't know what age that is, but I do know I'm making myself a 'Legendary Power' sticker for the back of my bat! :)

I'll send some photos over to Grays and see what dates they give me...and as for the weight, nobody is even remotely close, so lets have some more estimates.

I had (possibly still have) a more budget version of that model, I'd guess it was about from around from about 99ish and on the go for 3-4 seasons. Mines was tiny for the weight so I'd guess that one is around the 3lb mark.

it's got to be light, they didn't have the pumped up steroid chicken willow fashionable today

2lb 6oz...

surely that Logic would be likely to make it heavy!

Nobody correct with the exact weight yet, although very very close.

I forgot to add, it pinged like a dream...beautiful middle.

what I meant was back then I think most of the bats were quite light. Goochie then came along with some 3lb monster (triple ton against India) but I don't think heavy bats were common.

At least this thread shows how much bats have changed.  :)

Nowhere near that figure ... It was actually 2lbs 3oz!

As for the dates, I have had reply from Nick at Grays and he thought it was around 2000, but we are waiting for Richard Gray to get back to us, as he should be able to give us a more accurate timeframe.

I've just had an email from Richard Gray who informs me that this model was introduced in 2000/2001 and was used by Atherton as well as Cullinan.

Maybe something like this could be brought back into the game as a fielding joker... A bit like the fielding ring restrictions / power plays. A fielding side has one "no power" play that when instigated means the chosen batsman has to use a bat like the one above! With bats like that no wonder the nurdle used to be the most common shot!

It's great to see how bat design has changed, and really 2000 is not so long ago.

Ah....that's a whole different thread....don't under estimate the old toothpick bats. 6's were hit before bats  were 5 inches deep :) :D

The ping on this bat was amazing. Even after so many years of not being used it felt really good off the mallet.

Heavy bats date back to the late 70s early 80s. SS introduced the Jumbo in around 77/78 time, the original Slazenger V6 "chunky" was from 77 and the DF Magnum was from around 1980.

The unique thing about these Excaliburs is that they used the very best willow, were very limited in number, and that they were forged in flame. Many wanted one, but only those who could pull the blade from the very rock could wield its legendary power.

Don't you have a weight machine to check weight  ???

I'm sure he has a set of scales. He's asking people to guess the weight as a form of light entertainment, we're nerds around here and our social hierarchy is based around being able to guess how much a piece of wood weighs from any given picture.

Plus he's already told us the weight, which - unless he is very clever - means he has some form of measuring.

Apologies for wandering away from the topic, just thought I should share my experience with GN. After seeing the below post on the Forum I wrote to GN asking whether they could provide photos of the GN Volcano and this is how they responded:

http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=14156.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=14156.0)

"Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email, unfortunately we no longer have an image of this product as it is over 8 years old.

I do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind regards

Grays International"

It really surprised me since they were the makers; never imagined they would not be having any records on this model.
