How is bt sport free??
A sad day for all when you have to pay for two TV services to watch the sport you love!
-
I might be wrong but BT has the rights to C9's coverage. But Sky can host their own broadcast like they normally do.
-
Hmmm...something has to give because at some point the suits will realise kids need too see the sport they like on the tv...currently it's for the prevelidged few.
But if BT sport has significantly outbid Sky are we not going to have to pay for it?
-
Paid for by the broadband subscription...
This is the underlying battle and where the huge money is.
-
Well then you would have to question that as sky have the 2019 home series whether us fans are any better off.
As has been pointed out above we would need to pay twice.
The future is probably watching it,or any sport, maybe thru the internet
-
money in sport rights is going mad, how do they expect younger audience to watch it as not all family's can afford sky or bt

Exactly...highest ever viewing figures for ashes cricket was on c4 2005
The whole forum knows ameteur cricket is in big trouble.
Theres no easy answer thou, money talks
-
Have got rid of Sky Sports due to the cost I can't say the thought of having to pay for BT instead is any more appealing :(
Cricket on Five highlights it is for me still...

A comeback for radio coverage maybe?
Wonder how many of the forum remember taking a radio to bed to tune in for the australian tours as a kid?
Haha!!! :)
-
Gutted about this. Had to give up on UFC when BT Sports got the rights to that and then half the football went too. Really thought cricket was safe but sadly not.
I thought competition was meant to be good for the consumer driving down prices but this just seems to force us to pay out twice if we want to watch the sports we love.
This coming out on the same day that I found out Fear The Walking dead was going to be exclusively on BT has made this a very sad day :(

Before my dad got Sky, nevermind Sky Sports itself, I actually had permission from him to use his digital radio to listen to TMS during the 06/07 Ashes series. I was only 12 back then. I also used to rush to get ready for school earlier than usual so I could listen to TMS for an hour before setting off.
Sports are rapidly becoming way too expensive to watch on TV (at the ground is already often too expensive when you factor in the total cost), and as everyone correctly points out, it's hitting grassroots level participation badly.

So not free at all then!
-
Can't imagine BT sport's coverage is going to be of any class. Probably get the likes of Swann and gough presenting it!
-
If you have virgin media on a mid size package you get BT Sport included in the package price.
-
Chuffed about this
-
I am also pleased to see the BBL and other games in the aussie calendar come over to BT Sport from October 2016
-
So do you get bt sports when you buy a broadband package? I'll Just swap providers I if that's the case .
-
I think if you buy one of the better broadband offers form BT you get BT sport thrown in. Or if you have Virgin then you can get BT sport on there also.
-
This whole situation really grinds my gears, I understand that money talks but although I follow most sports I'm only really bothered about (read my mrs would only let me haha) watching cricket but I can't justify the extra cash for Sky Sports just to watch a cricket game once in a while, I used to love Channel 4's coverage, it's what got me into the game in the first place and I think it's a real shame that kids don't get any real exposure to such a great sport nowadays.
-
Can see a lot of people cancelling Sky now, myself included.
This year I have already cancelled the movies and was going to cancel the sports at the end of the premiership last year, only for the Ashes to come on.
However, now I think I will be cancelling the whole package. 900+ channels and more often than not I am watching stuff that is free to air.
Sky are losing stuff all over the place at the moment!

The drawback is, that 'subscribing' to BT sport via this method only gives you access to the internet based player, for watching on tablets and computers. Yes plugging in your laptop to the main TV is an option, but is an inconvenience. Their customers have been screaming out for a console app for a long time, and I am surprised they haven't got one given the number of people who will be watching the champions league.

I didn't know that. I have Virgin so I watch it via the Tivo box as part of my package.
-
I remember posting on here when BT got the champions league and wondered if they would go in for cricket. When the next Sky deal comes to an end it will be interesting to see if BT go for it and therefore drive up the price (i am sure the suits at the ECB would would love this). If they do i think it will be the end of any hope of live cricket getting back onto free to air channels
-
Getting a bit more interesting, telegraph reporting bt are going for englands pakistan tour to cover as the broadcast rights are not deceided
If they get that it could be a right bunfight
-
Probably worth buying an Amazon Fire TV Stick and side loading the BT Sport app if you have BT Broadband. It plugs in via an hdmi port and you'll be able to watch champions league and cricket properly on your big screen.

Nooope? Don't know if it's recently changed but I moved to BT for broadband when I moved flat last month, and all the TV cost me was £14 startup cost, then it's free. Didn't really care about the champions league etc as will normally go to the pub if I want to watch that, but I'm obviously pretty pleased with the cricket being added!

Sky could be losing my custom because I'm not interested in the foreign muck football, certainly not interested in most of the other random sports either. Football I can take or leave tbh now a days and I'll refuse to join the BT rat race. Sad times coming up as yet another cricket family will not watch the game.
I fully expect my new son to not play cricket when he's older unfortunaly

I'd cancel Sky sports if they lost the cricket, like you im not really fussed about football anymore and dont get me started on F1! The holy grail would be a dedicated cricket package/channels, 24/7 cricket that i could just pay for and leave all the other tat i dont want

Same here.

Same, I'm fed up of receiving letters every other month stating my bill is going up and up cause of one thing or another. Every time I've tried to reduce channels it goes down by something ridiculous like £1 a month so would be interesting to see how much it would go down if sports were ever removed (something I thought I'd never say!).. :(
-
Yep, same boat...I think sky is about 50 quid a month, my wife bought it for me as soon as C4 stopped covering the live cricket
I don't know whether this BT coverage is long term or not, Sky puts in a lot of money to the ECB and the age old question is would it harm cricket at grass roots if the SKY money was removed and replaced with something else
the question of whether the SKY money has been used to 'develop' cricket in this Country is another matter, and could someone one else do better?
I think we all know what happened is County club chairman lined their pockets and SKY is the cash cow no one wants to stop giving milk....but that's a whole different subject.
Personally I hope the fan benefits, and I know that may be a simple view but unless TV is affordable for kids to watch cricket, the amateur game will continue to go downhill...and it is rapidly going down
How that balances with a money orientated sport is very difficult to see.
The new Chairman of the ECB and Strauss however has indicated they want cricket coverage to be wider.
How much do they want to expand coverage? do they REALLY want that? if so, SKY's monopoly needs breaking up and replaced with something the normal average fan can afford...
Attending Test matches in this Country is massively expensive...the only way forward is cricket coverage for the majority, not the minority as it is now :)
-
Not any question of the money being removed I think, BT outbid Sky for the rights so Channel 9/whoever will be making more money from the coverage, not less. For England cricket coverage to fully move away from Sky to another pay tv option similar would have to happen for home games.
Much as we'd all like to have all the England games back on C4 like the good old days, pay tv is the future now in one form or another. A more realistic hope would be getting the promised English Big Blast Premier League Bash Slam t20 competition on free to air, a la the Aussie arrangement.
