Title: Your first century bat
Post by: i12breakfree on September 10, 2015, 12:55:52 PM
Lets list out some details of the bat that you used to score your first century. I have not scored one TBH but have scored few half centuries using my Blank bat. It was the B2 shaped G1 willow. 2-10 with great pickup and one of the best pinging bats i have ever had. That was one bat i had all the confidence that even a miss hit will travel for a six.
pic of the bat when it was brand new

2'9 Gray Nics Oblivion Carbo back in 2013. Scored heaps of runs with it, 1200 odd with 5 tons. I was never really convinced by it's performance but it's pick up, weight and balance was clearly perfect for me. It started to delaminate so I bought a Newbery Mjolnir which I barely scored a run with so I returned to the GN, scored another ton but then blew my knee out. Treated myself to an Aldred Gold Sovereign as a get well soon present, currently it's on 720 odd runs this year but no tons yet. Hoping to bag a couple in the coming weeks to get me up past a 1000 runs for the season. It's performance is significantly better than the GN but I get the feeling it's slightly too heavy for me.

I owned a GN because my father said they were one of the best makes, no other reason. I'd imagine their branding sells a lot. Although, the carbo was a really good bat !!

I'm subscribing to the a lot of people have owned them theory.
People who don't come on here will likely buy a bat from a big brand. To most that would be Gunn & Moore, Gray Nicholls & to a lesser extent Kookaburra or Slazenger.
If people bought their bats before becoming a member on here (or before this forum existed in some cases) I imagine they would've bought a bat from one of the bigger brands which could explain why so many first tons were with GNs

When I was so much younger. The Internet was too new and getting to owzat was impossible. We had 1 choice. A pokey shop in town. That only stocked gray nics, GM and kook. And even then it was only ten bats at a time.
Choice was not great.

Some low grade Kashmir willow BDM.
Hit 12 sixes in reaching tripple figure in a 12 overs game.

It was perhaps not the bat. The cricket ball looked a soccer ball to me that morning.

During a small break between overs, I remember the opposition team had a small meeting and one of them walked up to me and said, "You need to see a Psychiatrist". The seriously thought I had gone insane.

My club mass purchased from Larssons. I bought the Britannia cause it didnt look like the other RNS bats. Scored me 138* in 2007. Since the tons been made by a custom from Solitaire, Marlin Cricket, and the CA 15000 limited edt.

Ps. Cant believe anyone can actually bat with the CJI Sumo, unless they themselves are giants. Monstrous bat!

My first ton was scored with a Hunts County Steelback in the Leicestershire leagues when I was 16 (12 years ago, unbelievable!) and I think has a nice story to it. I was using my brothers old bat (HC Vision Custom Classic) before breaking the toe in the last net before the season began. My now late father took me to Hunts County to pick a bat, and despite going in for a more expensive model the Steelback model called out at me in long handle, and was about £85. I used it without netting and hit 101 in my first game with it. Unbelievable. My dad made a deal with me the winter before and said if I scored a men's 50 he'd give me £50. As he just bought me the bat I told him to forget the deal as being farmers we were not made of money! When I got home from school the following Monday (after telling all my mates about my glorious knock ha) I found an envelope with £101 in. :-)

Yes I've seen the IJC reviews and the look like guns, but Marcus doesn't make them anymore I don't think, so it's eBay or bust

Also looking at the Newbery Blitz, but the weight is too much so my preferred option is a Phantom t20 Spirit - they're massive for their weights

If one was in a devious mood (which i am) then one might suggest the two bats, but for stickers, are the same bat from the same maker, the weight thing is likely to be marketing from the respective brands flogging them.
