Title: monty released by essex
Post by: ppccopener on September 15, 2015, 02:21:54 PM
thought this was coming. It's been a bit of a sad tale to see Monty struggling and moving from county to county. He undoubtedly has ability but looks unlikely another County would take him on.
He is still young enough to continue a career as a pro cricketer but it's looking harder and harder..

Do you think one of the less fashionable Counties would still take a punt on him rediscovering form and overcoming his issues? :)

I think his time as a pro has come to an end sadly but I'd love to see him bounce back, wasn't that long ago he was doing the sprinkler down in Aus, sad times for the guy  :(

I think you are right, I can't see another opportunity coming from a County..
I could be wrong but he was on the 2013 Ashes tour, that's not very long ago.

It all seemed to go pear shaped at Sussex and downhill from then.Plus some significant(and surprising) personal issues....

very sad indeed

KP now Monty. Love the way we can discard World Class talent, because we are such a great team. Hopefully based on this article:-

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/international/england/11802354/Monty-Panesar-targetting-England-recall-after-taking-time-to-put-difficult-period-behind-him.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/international/england/11802354/Monty-Panesar-targetting-England-recall-after-taking-time-to-put-difficult-period-behind-him.html)

New Monty will be back. Plenty of counties need a test match bowler!

Isn't his attitude and behaviour half the issue though, pretty sure Essex dropped him earlier in the year for 'off-field reasons' other than anything else?

He played in herts div 1 for Luton Town & Indian this season, reports said he wasn't really a threat to batsman in that level so he is obviously struggling with form right now.

Who's discarded him?  The reports suggest that two counties had problems with his attitude and behaviour - there is only so much time and money a county can afford to bring a recalcitrant player around. They have matches to win and 16-odd other players to look out for, I don't think anyone has thrown him out in the cold.

I would suggest he needs to spend some of his own time and money getting himself right, rather than expecting a county to do it.

Did you read the article? He appears to be back on track and ready to play. Not claiming Essex or Sussex did anything wrong but I'm sure a fit again Monty would be an asset to any club. Even on a pay as you play contract.

pay as you play made be a route back in for him-good point- presuming he has sorted out things and is ready to give it 100 per cent.

I didn't read the article as I'm far too important  :D  I was referring to the inference made by your choice of words, which I felt was blaming the county, and therefore I didn't think it was down to him that he is without a contract.

I think it's great if he's sorting himself out - however something doesn't add up here to me -

Monty saying to the media that he's back and good to go  +  Essex still deciding to release him = Too much hassle for the county to keep him on?

Anyway - if he was willing to be flexible on salary, I'm sure several counties would consider him still:

Derbys
Glamorgan
Leics
Worcs
Kent

Yes probably. I imagine he was on a decent salary, and a change in coach might of also done for him.

Northants and gloucs as well. Given he started at northants it might be the right place for him to go now.

Few interesting grumbles about him around the Essex leagues.  Not sure how much true or false though.

Would be interesting if Yorkshire are willing to take a punt on him on a pay as he plays basis.

Rashid is away a lot with England and they are using Middlebrook as a back up. Gillespie and Yorkshire won't stand for any crap either so may get him back on track.

Seems a real shame how he's lost his way. Hope he manages to turn things round and get back playing top level cricket. I love watching him bowl.

its ok to be a lil mischievous but he needs to tone it down...would love to see him make a strong come back in the test arena.

From what I'm told he is a proper weirdo who has lost his passion and heart for the game

I suspect he is more likely to follow Middlebrook to Bedfordshire, than he is to Yorkshire.
