Title: Winter Net Locations - South of England
Post by: FattusCattus on September 27, 2015, 07:41:00 PM
Seeing as I have lined up lots of new chums for winter nets, I could do with a bit of help with some locations to net at. I am well aware of the Oval and Serious Cricket.

I could really do with any advice for locations or experiences of nets in:

Dorking / Leatherhead / Oxshott area

Heathrow / Hayes / Hounslow / West Drayton Area

Fulham / Brentford area

Croydon / Sutton / Kingston area

Croydon has the Cricket 4 Change centre where I've been playing for a club for the last 4 weeks. Not sure on how bookings work but they have two nets; only had a sneak peek inside it but looks half decent.

Yup - we netted there a couple of years ago - if I can arrange one there, could you make it over there?

Depends on dates, times etc. Work in Knightsbridge till 6 so imagine it'd take me a good hour and a bit. Plus during peak hours its £6 odd on the tube/train. Knightsbridge/Fulham/Kensington area after work would be slightly better but I've no idea about anywhere in the area.

Definitely interested though, could do with a few pointers from some more experienced players!

As you've already mentioned serious cricket (which I'd be up for) can I suggest the Ageas bowl too?

When are you looking at getting this all going? I still need to buy a helmet and a proper bat, but I'm waiting until IJC get the 2016 ranges in so I can go and take a look.

Any sports halls/leisure centres south of the river with hire facilities?

I'll put in my vote for Surrey Cricket Centre at George Abbott School in Guildford...  Mind you quite tempted by Serious Cricket though a bit of a hike

There is Trinity School, Croydon. five lane nets, decent facility, parking can get busy. Decent light. Not sure on cost however.

I live about 15 mins from Guildford could do anything in that area.

Just bumping this; I don't think I can do any of the Surrey coaching sessions for the next fortnight, don't suppose a decent enough amount of people fancy something one evening?

Two of us is a good start.

So, location and date? Gonna put my hands up for the Oval, but I've no idea how much it costs an hour or anything.

I'm game. Got a new (old) bat to try which i'm rather excited about, more on that in another thread tomorrow. Oval would be ok for me though i'll put my vote in for guildford again! Most midweek evenings are fine with me but maybe not next week.

You can add me to the list as well, preference is Guildford area, but work in London so that is a possibility if fairly central.

Guildford is too far for me, from home it's near enough 1hr40min.

Anyone used the nets at Spencer CC in Earlsfield? http://cricket.spencerclub.org/about/nets-hire/ (http://cricket.spencerclub.org/about/nets-hire/)

Count me in for an Oval net, any week-night would be ideal!

Edit: Would be keen for the Spencer nets too, Oval is easier for me but both would be reachable from work.
Title: Re: Winter Net Locations - South of England
Post by: rickjames on October 23, 2015, 02:56:19 PM
I only offered Spencer as some kind of compromise, ha. I will always choose the Oval because I am a 2 minute walk away.

I'll email about the KBCC in a second and try and get an idea on prices, I guess we'd need 7/8 to make it viable?

I think there was 6 of us for a 2 hour session at the oval last winter which was a perfect number, knackering but everybody got a good go. Can't remember what it cost but wasnt too extortionate.

Got an email back; 1 net at peak times is £40 per hour. That seems like a hell of a lot...

So far I have:

Myself
@FattusCattus
@rickjames
@felix

If we can get the 6 then I'll get it all booked up asap - what time works best for everyone? I can be there anytime after about 6.15...

@Buzz   @tim2000s    @plumb111   @Boondougal   ?

Is this for next wednesday?

I could actually plan to be in London then (here today also) not a scuby do of me having any kit with me through. As those who were there last time will have seen my floor-less technique and impeccable timing means there is no danger or any damage to toe.... even less to edge. If you are happy to "share the willow" then i'm in.

PS thursday would be better but it looks like Wednesday it is.

PPS... the above is a lie... i have no idea what i'm doing... occasionally i even hit the damn ball... but thats mainly if its going to hit me. Self preservation.

Morning all, don't seem to be able to send a PM to all of you.  Hope you're all fit and raring to go for tonight.  Memory escapes me as to where the school is, am I right in remembering that you go in through the Hobbs gate and go left?  Might I suggest meeting 6.45ish so we're changed and ready to go at 7?
Title: Re: Winter Net Locations - South of England
Post by: rickjames on November 04, 2015, 08:20:39 AM
Exactly that; Hobbs gate then turn left, you'll walk past the players entrance first before seeing the entrance for the KBCC a second later. Once you go through the main entrance turn left and go down the stairs or use the lift

I'll probably be there around 6:55, have the fortune of saying I'll be changed and ready, living round the corner et al

Nope!! everyone was far to busy netting I'm afraid.

A lovely time was had by all in a completely empty Oval Indoor School (now is the time to book London nets chums!)

Neon Cricket and his significant other turned up. I was pleased to see that Neon complied with the overwhelming forum stereotype, all rippling muscles and cut physique. He purveyed a curious mix of filthy seam-up and something he described as his 'leggies'. However, with the bat, he was my type of player - favouring the pull and the swat, and contemptuous of anything not pitched up.

The forum's favourite 'bearded wonder' Felix turned up once again sporting his Lincoln green outfit. With the bat, he is a man transformed, damn you Jake Vitas for selling him a B&S bat - all of a sudden he is KP - driving over the top, slamming through the covers and flicking off his hip - and some of those he connected with too! With the ball, he still runs up as if he has too many elbows and knees, and propels the ball at such a speed, that if he doesn't like what comes out, he can run after it, gather it up and start again.

And then there was Rick James - or 'Big Al' as we call him. He is so youthful-looking and fresh faced, that when he arrived I nearly directed him to the Archbishop Tennyson School. He has a lovely big blue bag and is very enthusiastic - so enthusiastic in fact, that he took a chunk out of own thumb during his follow-through in his first delivery and bled all over the place. His bowling is a work in progress and involved a lot of growling, but with the bat, after an initially tentative net, second time round he was more confident and really started putting bat to ball - keep going son!

Then, half way through the evening, a homeless person turned up. Short of stature with a straggly grey beard and rheumy eyes, he seemed keen to play, and as he didn't smell funny, we let him. Lo and behold, when he took his flasher-mac off, it was Boondougle - hooray!! Once again he unveiled his box of off-spinning tricks, many of which now don't bounce - but it is with the bat that things really took off. Resembling a small, angry helicopter he flashed his blade around, and contorted himself into all sorts of positions. His strikes were accompanied by a series of "arghhhs" and "yaaaaahs" and it is fair to say that with the filth served up, square leg and point took a peppering.

All in all, a jolly time with new chums - and it's worth considering, the school was so empty that if we could actually get 10-12 people to commit and turn up, we could have a right old nerd-off party, gambolling around wagging our tails and sniffing each other!

All in all, a jolly time with new chums - and it's worth considering, the school was so empty that if we could actually get 10-12 people to commit and turn up, we could have a right old nerd-off party, gambolling around wagging our tails and sniffing each other!

you are gonna have a field day of descriptive journalism at the Hampshire net on the 14th I think!!!  carnage  :)

Nope!! everyone was far to busy netting I'm afraid.

Always love your artistic license.

Man up Malcolm!!  In your hands it's a wand!

Haha - with my guns anything's possible ;).  Seriously though I've thought for a while that a really light bat would improve my control and bat speed without compromising weight of shot too much (which is pretty lousy in my case anyway), I used to have a teammate even shorter and stockier than @Boondougal (if that were possible  :)) who used to use a harrow and hit it miles with nothing more than a lazy flick.

The 2nd works for me, would be good if we can start around 6.30pm so I don't have to work late, and it will take me 1.5hrs to get home once we finish and would be good to have time for a beer 🍻 first.

This time I plan to show a little less respect to fattus's dibbly dobbers after the write up he gave my batting 😉

Are the southerners untrustworthy? Or am I far to trusting in that I book 2 hours and just trust folk to pay on the day when they arrive?

So anyone for a definite 100% YEAAAAAAAAAAH? I might ask a friend of mine if it's OK, similar position to me of netting again last summer and he's thinking about joining a club of some sort; pretty certain he's getting fed up of using training balls and wants to use a red one, ha.

I'm up for the 13th Medium Al. 5 or 6 to a net is fine, with 5 you'll get a longer bat!

Matt doesn't have a bank card at the moment for some reason, so he'll bring along money on the night.

With any luck the GoPro I've ordered will arrive on the Tuesday, currently thinking of all the fun possibilities.

I may be struggling for this due to a very sickly wife.

@Boondougal - would you be free to step in?

Or would anyone else like to take my place  @tim2000s , @Chalkie  or anyone else?

@FattusCattus @neoncricket

I probably could fill the void (and as we all know its a big void to fill) but i would have to go and source some suitable clothing and i definitely don't have any gear with me... not that i ever do.

Unless someone is desperate to play and work emergencies aside then count me in

thanks

Boonie - you turned up in a flasher-mac last time, so it can't be any worse! I'm sure Sports Direct will sell you a white PE vest and shorts for £2.

I will assume that you are now in for me!!

£2 you Southerners know how to spend big. tup north £2 still gets me a full shell suit not just a PE top.

@FattusCattus can i assume you've already had he pleasure of paying? Hence me owing you and in such event cancelling my CBF username and emigrating to spain on my ill gotten gains.

Haha! You can almost see the camera shake.... just as well you weren't on the receiving end of the Jaffa to @neoncricket at 1:10  :).  And lucky that the video misses the carnage that @Boondougal was reaping on me at the end - the little fella was really on fire!  But thanks @rickjames, appreciate you uploading it, it was really worth the effort for me - very instructive to watch myself batting.  Now I must learn to hit it off the square  :)

As my muscles were giving me serious grief this morning for putting them through 2 hours of nets on Wednesday, I had cause to reflect whether it had been worth it. I now know the answer!

@rickjames that's a great piece of kit you have there, thanks for bringing it along and taking the time to edit and post the highlights (and thanks for omitting the filthy beamer I bowled at @Boondougal).

@neoncricket thanks for organizing the session at the Oval again.

@rickjames + 1 @neoncricket @felix @Boondougal cheers for the net session gents, I enjoyed it enormously.

Haha tell that to my skipper, didn't bowl 1 ball in the league last year... Mind you @Boondougal (the pocket dynamo right at the end) found me much more to his liking...

For anyone who's emailed me about individual clips, they're on my work laptop which is at the office, so I'll try and sort something out Monday.

Because I am bored/eff it, here you go. Will have to do a little more fiddling next time to get the angles right, but whatever. I am dreadful and need to work on EVERYTHING

I noticed you also role you wrists alot even when playing through covers, early on a few of your best short to mid on you kept your left elbow high and loosened your bottom hand, try this almost as if you were playing with just your left hand on the bat. Also wait a little longer before playing (you've probably heard this alot and its a very cliche thing to say) admittedly only had the time to watch the first few minutes and this might have got better as your net goes on, but this isnt the case in a match! Nice to see some videos of people, i will have to get involved in one if these soon!

This the matting provides extra bounce must have been used for coaching short balls in there previously (correct me if im wrong)

1) I was not at Sussex last night, I was in Tolworth freezing to death playing football. GoPro served me well there, also.
2) The matt was there when we walked in, didn't bother taking it off as time is quite frankly far too precious...

I didn't think the bounce was particularly steep, no more than other times I've netted there, and certainly less than Dummer where I kept getting rapped on the fingers off a length...
