Title: What is going on with Spartan?
Post by: grunter on September 28, 2015, 06:03:18 AM
Does anyone have any knowledge about what is currently happening with Spartan?

They haven't stocked any retailers in NZ/Australia with their 2015/2016 range of equipment, yet every other brand had their stock arrive months ago.

Apparently they are not even distributing in New Zealand this year as the retailers I've spoken to said Spartan couldn't even say if they would be able to fill the stores orders. The Aussie retailers are no better off, not knowing when the stock is due to arrive.

There's been a lot of activity on their social media over the past week, announcing gear going to their sponsored players - yet the gear itself isn't available to buy anywhere!

I know the Eoin Morgan stuff is available in the uk bats are at pro direct
As for the other players I'm not so sure, with Clarke retiring it leaves a big gap to fill on their roster

It's just an incredibly bad move on their part to miss the Southern Hemisphere preseason (when everyone is wanting to buy new kit)!

From what I've heard, GCCC has a few 2015/2016 MC bats available, but no Dhoni/Gayle range and no softs.

Most obvious thing with no presence in Oz would be the lack of a main sponsor now Clarke has gone, no? Can only imagine that can dent your marketing/brand/whatever...

As far as the UK is concerned it seems to be business as normal for them. I was in India last month and had lunch with Cameron, who is their main man for product design and buying. Next week is of course the Lords show and we have also been invited by them for an evening with Eoin Morgan.

It's quite possible that shipments maybe arriving very late, as can happen when sourcing from overseas.

This is true, i've noticed that here is australia, there wernt much CG/MSD bats last year but lots and lots of MC ones, so maybe most stores might not stock Spartan anymore?

sounds like chinese whisper - SS has received a huge order from Spartan and MS Dhoni has invested in Spartan Brand.

Be interesting who they pump their money into to replace Pup. For me, Maxwell has a bit of marketability about him

If the whisper is true, then I would say its a good move by Spartan to get SS make their bats. Dhoni will no longer have to take his SS bat and replace the stickers :-)

They have struggled with organisation and delivery since they arrived on the market here, we ordered a reasonable amount but cancelled after many delays with delivery, the stock which we received was mainly a few bats. Virtually nothing arrived softs wise.

It's been a mix of SS and Sohndi over the last few years.

I've picked up dozens of their bats and never liked the feel of any of them. Even with the 50% off Spartan sales here in Sydney back in March/April, I couldn't find one item I liked, and I'm a hopeless cricket gear badger.

Just my opinion. I'm sure a few of you gents have had a descent MC LE in fairness.

They have been ok, unfortunately most of other models are all the same shape.

I've never been a fan of Spartan either. I've never seen (in the flesh) a decent performing one, nor one with great looks for the grade. That said, there have been some good ones picked up by forum members in the past.

A lad I play with had a lovely MC1000 that he got in the PDC sale, it was a gun. Split up the middle of the blade from the toe after a couple of months. He had to resort to Twitter to get a refund!

Pdc are usually good on the returns thing. Was he trying to get money from pdc or direct from Spartan?

He sent it back and they weren't interested, kept saying the Spartan rep had to see it and make the decision. Think he then said it was one of those thins and there was nothing he could do! He would've settled for a replacement but after that took to Twitter to complain about the shocking customer service. He ended up with a refund and bought a Spartan Gayle bat from someone else

I'm not a fan of their stickers or naming scheme (as I hate gear with players names/signatures on it, feels so childish imo), however the Spartan Steels I've seen at the GCCC look fantastic for the price. Decent profile, 6 or 7 straight grains with no blemishes sold as grade 3 (AUD$225, for reference a NB TC560 is $250). If it weren't for the stickers, I'd consider an MC1000 or MC LE bat.

I've used MC LE's for the past few seasons of high grade cricket.

Found these to be exceptional bats, and the two that I have for this season are absolute beauties. The guys in my squad (that include current first class players, pros) think the pickups and profile on the MC LE are some of the best going around.

In saying that, the first MC LE i had a few seasons ago split across the grain from a yorker only a few months in - had this replaced as it was "storm damaged". The clefts are very soft, so if you bear that in mind in terms of the longevity of the bats, you go in knowing what to expect when playing with "players grade" bats.

Being an opening bat facing guys bowling 75+ every week probably doesn't help!

If I can find one I like I might go for one for next season.  Picked up a couple in the past and was impressed.  Price put me off however!
