Just been thinking as normal about cricket and bats in general, and about performance. So this evening I was shown a few bats by a mate and two in general stood out as superb bats, looks wise they wereG1++++ or what ever that nonsense is but you get my point stunning looking bats. Then tapping up an old ball the ball just pinged all over the blade and I was saying to my mate "performance on these is amazing blah blah " really great "performance"
But for me they would not perform as they were 2.13/14 in weight. So to me this means performance is no good although "ping" is amazing and would send the ball miles.
Is this the same for others or am I looking to deep and is performance just how a bat taps up and the power or middle as opposed to how you as a player could use it?

They wouldn't happen to be two GP274 would they ? Pity about there weight they would be in my bag if they were a touch lighter

Proper bats!

A great-performing bat will make me look like a sex-God, and will make women want to sleep with me.

In answer to the question...
A bat that makes me feel like I get value for my shots and surprises me on occasion.

Yes they would indeed Gary, exceptional and like I said ping wise up there with pretty much anything but I just wouldn't actually be able to use it. Hence performance wise not for me ( a few of the others thought ;))

Stop being modest you chunk of hunk! You know that women already fall over themselves for your already!

Performance / ping
,,pings something you can check when buying a bat, like pick up and looks etc but your only really gonna judge performance when your out in the middle
Unless you've got ijc,s crystal balls!
Performance is full value for shots
-
How well a cricket ball pings off them, simple. Performance is an attribute of the bat rather than what you like in a bat for me, if you can hand it to another bloke who smashes the ball everywhere it's still a good bat, that doesn't change just because you like light/heavy bats yourself!
-
Personally speaking "ping" is something that I can test with a mallet, whereas "performance" is something I then "try to predict" using the experience I have gained over the years. I base my judgement on what I can hear and feel when I use a mallet....and its not just any mallet, I have my favourite one thats been with me for well over 2 decades.
So ultimately "ping" is now and "performance" is what happens when you actually use the the bat.
-
Very well it for me mate, I'm in the same boat now I think. I'll say bats got great performance if at the end of the season Iv been comfortable and confident using my bat and obviously had a good season

Have to agree with this ^^ and also add that for me it's about being able to time the ball to the boundary and 'keeping my shape' as opposed to having to 'hit' the ball to the boundary.
Just to play devils advocate. What would people prefer given a choice:
A smaller middle that has brilliant performance or a generous middle with less ping/performance?
-
A bat that only requires timing to race to the boundary and not having to slog it to get it there . The only bat I've owned that hasn't done this was my red ink butterfly, you literally had to hit the ball to get it anywhere so couldn't play correct shots and just time it :(
All my rpc and blue rooms have been stonking, the h4l a close second and the Aldred hot on the heals of he h4l

I think that depends on how good a batsmen you are. A top class batsmen will continually middle the ball so just needs a small surface area to work with. Others mere mortals will need more of the blade ...

How much is hotspot technology??
Be good to have a net and see how many a club level player middles.

Cric tek used to sell those sheets, gave a very good idea of where you hit the ball. I have a pic somewhere
-
For me it's all about how far I can hit the ball with little effort, a good performing bat allows me to focus on timing rather than trying to whack the ball hard.

Exactly what i was going to write....

For me its having the trust and confidence in the bat to actually not even worry about how the ball is going to come off it. If I commit to a shot I want to have the sound knowledge that if I perform the stroke correctly I will get my anticipated results. For example if I want to hit over cover, my focus should be on head/foot postion, weight transfer and getting my hands correctly through the ball. How the bat performs should be way down on priorities, because if im anxious how the ball will ping off it then issues such as trying to over-hit or even decelerating through the ball (due to nerves) will occur. A bat that performs well will takes these cares away, you know yourself which shots succeed so can play them with confidence over and over and get the value for your strokeplay
-
Agree with @CrickFreak and @Buzz . A bat that makes me feel that when I've hit the ball, it is staying hit.

Spot on - value for shots every time.
-
Most of my bat's performances mean to me 'what a waste of money you are, you feckless piece of lumber, why am I out?'
Because as we all know, every dismissal we suffer, and every low score we endure is either the fault of our bats or poor umpires.
We ourselves are blameless.
-
My idea of performance is minimal input to get maximum output. Believing my skill level is constant the bat which gives me better value for my shots will be a better performing one. I would not include over hitting (than anticipated) a ball counted as less performance.
-
A big and responsive middle so the sixes get bigger and more frequent. The fours race faster to the boundary and your old singles turn into 2's and 4's.
However, I have found that a bat that is too good has altered my batting style. I used to be more of a gap pusher. Now I think I'm Chris Gayle.
-
Bat performance for me is one that gives me the maximum value for my natural game- anyone can slog sweep the ball a long way with a big bat, but can you time an on-drive for 4 with it?
The one and only bat that has ever aided my natural game is my current Rob Pack Custom, which is ridiculously good, and makes me feel (though definitely not look), like a young Ian Bell!

On drive for four? Pah, easy - can do that with a plank. Hitting a slog sweep for six Got to be joking...

If all you have to do is lean on the ball and it shoots along the ground, that's a good performing bat. My B&S GP247 does that on the regs, makes me look a hell of a lot better than I am!!

Oh the dream... I had a Kookaburra Big Kahuna once that I regularly hit accidental boundaries with, every so often a well timed block would scoot away for four or I'd aim to chip one into the outfield and look up to realise the ball had gone out of the ground. Seriously.
I dream of finding another bat that goes that well!

More of that cherry towards the back of the bat than the front of it....

All I care about is pickup, feel and balance. If this is good then I smack almost any ball. Never really worry much about ping. So long as the bat feels good in hands, you play your strokes effectively, IMO.
I played with very high end, and very expensive bats, but a Kashmir willow $20 Al-cheapo bat made by DSC (Master 2000), burrowed from an opposition team member, was the best thing I ever picked up in cricket bats. Hit fluent sixes by flicks off the middle stump - something I wasn't confident to try with a $500 bat.
