What does a bats performance mean to you??
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:37:49 PM »

Just been thinking as normal about cricket and bats in general, and about performance. So this evening I was shown a few bats by a mate and two in general stood out as superb bats, looks wise they wereG1++++ or what ever that nonsense is but you get my point stunning looking bats. Then tapping up an old ball the ball just pinged all over the blade and I was saying to my mate "performance on these is amazing blah blah " really great "performance"

But for me they would not perform as they were 2.13/14 in weight. So to me this means performance is no good although "ping" is amazing and would send the ball miles.

Is this the same for others or am I looking to deep and is performance just how a bat taps up and the power or middle as opposed to how you as a player could use it?

A great-performing bat will make me look like a sex-God, and will make women want to sleep with me.

In answer to the question...
A bat that makes me feel like I get value for my shots and surprises me on occasion.

Yes they would indeed Gary, exceptional and like I said ping wise up there with pretty much anything but I just wouldn't actually be able to use it. Hence performance wise not for me ( a few of the others thought ;))

Performance / ping
,,pings something you can check when buying a bat, like pick up and looks etc but your only really gonna judge performance when your out in the middle
Unless you've got ijc,s crystal balls!

Performance is full value for shots

How well a cricket ball pings off them, simple. Performance is an attribute of the bat rather than what you like in a bat for me, if you can hand it to another bloke who smashes the ball everywhere it's still a good bat, that doesn't change just because you like light/heavy bats yourself!

Personally speaking "ping" is something that I can test with a mallet, whereas "performance" is something I then "try to predict" using the experience I have gained over the years. I base my judgement on what I can hear and feel when I use a mallet....and its not just any mallet, I have my favourite one thats been with me for well over 2 decades.

So ultimately "ping" is now and "performance" is what happens when you actually use the the bat.

Very well it for me mate, I'm in the same boat now I think. I'll say bats got great performance if at the end of the season Iv been comfortable and confident using my bat and obviously had a good season

Have to agree with this ^^ and also add that for me it's about being able to time the ball to the boundary and 'keeping my shape' as opposed to having to 'hit' the ball to the boundary.

Just to play devils advocate. What would people prefer given a choice:

A smaller middle that has brilliant performance or a generous middle with less ping/performance?

A bat that only requires timing to race to the boundary and not having to slog it to get it there . The only bat I've owned that hasn't done this was my red ink butterfly, you literally had to hit the ball to get it anywhere so couldn't play correct shots and just time it :(

All my rpc and blue rooms have been stonking, the h4l a close second and the Aldred hot on the heals of he h4l

I think that depends on how good a batsmen you are. A top class batsmen will continually middle the ball so just needs a small surface area to work with. Others mere mortals will need more of the blade ...
