That looks a rather large piece of wood!
-
Jeez that looks huuuge!
-
Nick, someone got your new bat pregnant
-
It's having twins or triplets by the looks of it!
I know you like a lighter piece of willow Nick - so surely this is not that light?
-
whats the weight/spec of this bat? Looks stunning :)
-
This is the point where you tell us it's a 2.8...
-
It has 45mm edges according to my tape measure. 70mm spine and no concaving I could see. It is a harrow length blade, full width, with an SSH.
Have a go at the weight and the grade yourselves.
-
Oh my what a big one you have sir....
2.10.5
-

Nope, if it was that light I suspect a Pro might have first call on it!
-

Have you been reading my pm's! Scales said 2'10.4.
-
How is that 2.10?! Looks like something Chris Gayle would use!
-
Too heavy for you Nick....think you need to send it my way ;)
-
What was the price?
@Red Ink Cricket , do you have more clefts like that?
-

Ha ha, nope, just a very good guess.. It's massive for that though!
-
In all honesty, when I discussed the specs I thought it was optimistic on my part to ask for a huge edge with a decent spine. Expected a fair amount of concaving or a compromise in the dimensions. It has blown me away.
-
Did you go down to the Red Ink workshop to get it made or sent your specs through to John?
-

It's a G3, best to check with John on the pricing.
-
He does make a very nice bat - but that's exceptional - interesting to hear how you get on with an ssh harrow length blade - I've been toying with miniaturising more of my kit!
-
That is an absolute monster!!
-
That's a very nice looking monster for G3. Any specific reasons for going down the size other than getting a big bag?
I think a full size SH would be easily 4-5 oz heavier than current weight.

Well I'm 5'7 so a harrow feels quite nice in the hands, sometimes a SH can feel a little long. With the handle, I find my hands tend to slide up the handle with SH and I'm hoping an SSH will keep them in the middle. I don't have big hands anyway so SSH is fine. I think those 2 tweaks are probably 2oz off the weight max.
-
Whaaaaat?! That looks fantastic, be very interested to hear if John has more clefts capable of reproducing this! How much shorter is a harrow blade, I thought they were the same length? I was contemplating trying to get something similar made with a handle making it up to normal length, this might just have swayed me...
-
It was an exceptional cleft considering its size. The dimensions are pretty much on the limit once pressed but able to get it to work. The reduction in size helps but as Nick said it would have been a max of 2oz really in this cleft.
I may have some others(would need to check). I know I have a couple of lightish clefts but unsure if they have the size to meet this. I may struggle to keep these dimensions but a few minor tweaks in terms of size or some very minor concaving would help.
Glad I have exceeded your expectations Nick, Always nice to get feedback like this.
If anyone has any specific weights they would want something like this made in then please let me know and I'll have a check of the clefts. I may not be able to replicate exactly depending on weight but can tweak the shape to suit the weight and size of bat. This in 2.8 may need a few mm off the edges and spine or maybe a touch of concaving to make it worth but would still be a pretty big bat.

Just emailed through my specs. I would of popped down had there been any tricky decisions to make on the weight but as you can see there wasn't :D

Can't wait to use this :D

bat envy incoming

I would laugh if I didn't know it was true ;)

Did a bit of tapping up and it's got a nice deep sound to it. As you would expect, seems a nice wide and long middle. Only really the last couple of cm of the toe and just under the stickers that don't respond much. That may change once I have knocked it in fully. Pickup wise it feels its weight but that's ok as it looks much bigger. Instinctively you think it has to weigh more. Handle is nice and comfortable, not to thin or fat (a couple of GM's I got feel slightly to thick in the handle).
-
For anyone who's interested I've put some pictures up on Twitter of the bat making process of nicks bat. There's also a short pressing video too. The creaking in the video is the edge of the cleft rubbing on the press bed when it's a bit damp. Doesn't cause any issues just creaks and squeaks a bit

This is very smart! Lot of short guys use bats that are too long for them. I have and sometimes still do use my size 6 with good effect.

Do you have any more of these exceptional clefts? 2-11-2-12 fully dressed?

I had the same problem with hands sliding it has been cured by using a GN control grip on the top half of the handle the rings At the top of the grip prevent your hands sliding up the handle. Always have a SSH thinner handle on my bats due to small hands and a 1 inch shorter blade find that at 5 foot six tall it he bats easier to control and You can get a full swing without the toe hitting the ground.
-
I was contemplating getting a ssh or a narrow but chickened out in case it adversely affected my game ( it's already adverse as it is) but this looks stunning. I understand about having a smaller handle as I picked up a gn not long ago up which had a thin handle and it felt comfortable.
Will definitely give this a try

Not sure I have anything in x3 that would do it but possibly something in another grade. I know I don't have anything quite this good but may have something close which would require a minor tweak here and there

I have seen this bat in person very nice design and very well made indeed top stuff mate

Well you certainly seem to know what you are on about. You see enough from the dr so guess you have a decent eye for things.

That is a hell of a blade! What would a regular SH with similar specs weigh @Red Ink Cricket ?

This was a very light cleft. If I was to find something similar ( unlikely but you never know) it would probably be about 1-1.5oz heavier. To do this in a average weight cleft it would probably weigh 4+ oz heavier. Purely a guess though, difficult to tell unless you base it on a specific cleft/ starting weight

Just a quick update. Had my first net with this last night using cricket balls. Facing some general spin and trundle. Was very impressed with the width of the sweet spot, I didn't appear to mistime many which I take as a good sign. Also means it's knocked in with very few dead spots and no cracks post nets.
I changed grips to a chevron double thickness at the bottom and the bat now comes in at 2'9.7 . Felt good in the hands and easy to swing.

Glad it's coming along nicely. Just warming up ready to terrorise some early season bowling! Enjoy using it.

Hopefully you'll come into the big boys net next week ;)
