Title: Looking to buy my first Custom bat
Post by: App999 on November 12, 2015, 08:55:02 AM
Hi all,

Been a long time reader of this forum. Finally had the balls to post something on here. Looking to buy my first custom made bat very very soon as my current bat (Spartan MC LE with TAS inserts) is on its last legs. I'm really keen on the warner replica or even the GN Legend Gold bat but can't justify paying over $900aud for an off the shelf company unless someone can justify that price for me? Is there any anyone that could possibly replicate the exact specs of the GN warner replica or GN Legend Gold for less than $900aud delivered to Aus? Id rather support a bat maker on CBF than a large company. I'm currently using a 2.14 but I'm comfortable with a bat up to 3lb.

Suggestions on similar shapes and profiles also welcome :)

Tried to upload photos but keeps coming up with an error

Cheers

Try the B3 TKC Pepsi bat, very similar to GN Warner edition and should be much cheaper, right in your weight range mate. Get in touch with streaky @The Doctor.

Moved that how to upload photos topic out of the Pavilion into Forum Announcements. Seems a bit stupid to leave it in the Pavilion when newbies need it most.

Hey skip,

As in cost? I bought it about 3 years ago I believe from a CBF member for about $350aud. Its an absolute gun of a bat. The TAS inserts really do help I reckon. The Inserts are starting to split the bat in half though.

Ill try an upload photos when I get a chance.

Hey Amrit,

I have checked out the pepsi bat. Its quite a nice profile but middle might be slightly a little too low for me.  I did see one advertised on ebay.co.uk the other day. Possibly the owner is a member from CBF?

Cheers

This is my current bat. Just replaced the Spartan labels with Genuine Puma stickers. Its the best bat ive had but Ive only ever bought off the shelf unless you class this as custom.
The TAS inserts are starting to separate from the bat just from old age. '

Whether or not others have tried these Inserts, I reckon they do help a little. They do however add quite a few ounces to the weight of the bat. Its now 2.14. Without them it was originally 2.10 I believe. Maybe others can simplify how these inserts work

Cheers mate just had a look and they seem a pretty interesting concept

My only query would be around the legality of them? Seems a similar idea to a laminate or the graphite back sheets that kookaburra used to use?

Pardon my ignorance but what are TAS inserts??

Strips of oak (I think) with a natural bow in them.
They're put in the edges of the bat with the bow going the opposite way to the blade, which apparently improves ping.

Unless you're a professional all these things are legal anyway.  ;)

Hey mate, welcome to the forum! I believe I sold you that bat and I'm glad you have been happy with it!  :)
The TAS inserts definitely add a few ounces but that bat picked up so well it wasn't too noticeable... As for the Warner profile, I had GN make me one in Legend Willow ( some picks on here under a thread I started called "hey Warner, missing one of your bats, mate?" and it pinged like a pingy thing from pingsville but was a bit heavy so I just sold it to a very happy team mate. One thing about the Warner bat is that as the handle is so thin as it doesn't have any binding, it needs at least two grips.
I got a B3 Pepsi a few weeks ago in Crown willow: a bit thicker through the shoulders and a much thicker handle gives it a much better pick up than the Warner! It hasn't got the ping of the GN yet but at the rate it is opening up, I don't think it will be long before its on par if not better.

haha. I knew you'd pop up somewhere. The bat you sold me has got me a fair few runs. the middle on the thing is ridiculous but pretty sure its gonna snap soon. I'm pretty desperate for a new bat in case it snaps on me. That custom you got from GN is exactly what I'm after. Looks a stunner mate. How much did the Pepsi cost in crown grade?

Cheers

How about weight of runs and 100's which is more meaningful in this game

Then Warner would trump Kohler-Cadmore down to the fact he's 8 years older and has played 548 more innings (as at 12/11/2015)

Well so this happened today after the first few balls. I think the reason it snapped this way is because of the TAS insterts. Maybe a batmaker can explain The inserts are quite big. No wonder they add about 4 ounces. Damn I wish I had a backup bat right now. Got nothing to use for about a week.

Paul Aldred does indeed make a lovely bat, but tbh from what I see on here all the forum bat makers turn out top notch wood and all will custom for you, so talk to them all see who suits your budget best bud.

For the record my Aldred Spectre is starting to ping amazingly now I'm well into the mallet bashing stage..

Really difficult decision considering all the batmakers on here do a great job with custom bats. Ill probably never go with off the shelf path anymore. Ive ordered a warner profile bat with a few tweaks from B3. I'm highly considering ordering another one maybe from another bat maker as a backup. Trying to decide what profile I'd like.

Just give yourself a day or 2 to mourn your loss, then best of luck on finding a replacement!

It was a great bat. Pretty devastated at the time. But on the bright side Ive finally taken the route of a custom bat. New journey in my life ;-)
Ive decided I'm going to order a backup bat. So difficult to decide a on a profile. ive ordered the Warner small edge profile high spine profile from B3 with a few minor tweaks. I wouldn't mind the Warner big edge profile to top it off. Its almost impossible to get the exact same specs around 2.14 though

To be fair I do seem to have a number of replacements if one bat gets poorly!
But I do realise that not everyone is in the same fortunate position that I am lucky enough to be in.
But even with my harem of bats, I would still mourn a bat if it broke  :o

Yeah it was my baby. It scored me over 1000 runs and I bought it second hand as well. I just didn't plan ahead. I knew it was on its last legs. Wish I had your collection. Must be difficult to decide what bat to use though

Little sneak peak of my custom 3 stripe from the guys at B3. The stickers however have been changed to the new white labels. Just waiting for it to be delivered so I can tap it up. Not sure how it compares to the size of other bats though.

That looks great mate, I think you probably struggle to get a bug edge profile just due to the need of an exceptionally large cleft to start with and then it being light enough to get a 2.14 bat out of it

Looks like it has a nice long middle. Haven't got any pics of profile yet.
Ill try and do a comparison to another bat when it arrives.

Specs are:
33.5mm edge
79.5mm spine
weight about 2.15
Title: Re: Looking to buy my first Custom bat
Post by: App999 on November 27, 2015, 02:56:12 AM
The day has come and it has finally arrived. Immediately I noticed it was huge as there was a bulge in the packaging. The guys at B3 have produced a work of art for me. The service was second to none. The specs are exact to what I ordered right down to the weight. Cant wait to start scoring some runs with it. I have uploaded some pics and a comparison between my TON reserve custom bat. The B3 looks massive compared to the TON. Bear in mind the TON is already huge. If I had one criticism and it is only very minor, the back sticker when arrive was creased and bubbly and started to peel off.

TON reverse custom specs:
Very softly pressed
44mm edge
60mm spine height
No concaving
2.15lb
Slightly bottom heavy however the middle is extremely long

B3 3stripe custom
33mm edge
78mm Spine height
No concaving
2.15lb
Pickup is amazing and middle is very long

Enjoy the pics :)

hey mate,

I have actually seen the BDM replicas on youtube. Yes they are a good stick and bargain prices however the size of them are nowhere near the size of warners bats. B3 made me an absolute monster for a 2.15 in the warner small edge profile. Spine height of 80mm with 34mm edges and no concaving and awesome pickup. I don't mind paying good coin for quality. I'm not saying that BDM aren't good quality though. They do make lovely sticks.

For the weight its massive. Ping is sensational all over the bat and it will only get better over time. I managed 102 on the weekend with it. My teammates couldn't believe the size of it. My next bat is the adam Voges Grove profile. Its been made up on CAD but just waiting a reply on David for pricing so I can get the order processed

My hybrid shape arrived yesterday: the white stickers look brilliant but unfortunately the handle has been made round instead of the oval shape I requested that is on my Pepsi... I'm sure the lads will sort it out!

your right they will have you got in touch or want me to have a word

The hybrid shape is in between my Pepsi and your Warner profile: 40mm edges with no concaving... I'm really looking forward to seeing the Voges profile: what weight have you ordered, mate?

Nice I cant wait to see the finished product. The one I ordered is 2.15. Pretty much max wood without concaving for the weight

I woke up to an exciting email this morning from David at B3. He took a few sneak peaks of the finished product.

80mm Spine. I think that's max as Ive already asked if it could be higher. Hope the pickup is good as its 2.15. Its a 2 stripe. Havent got pics of the face yet.

Just when I don't think I need another bat - especially one that's heavier than I usually use.... :o

I have 3 bats at the moment and they are all good. This one will make it 4. All 2.15. Trying to offload 2 of the bats but only a minority use heavy bats

In my (relative) youth I used a 3lb Newbery but now in my dotage I don't have the guns!  :(

I have an NV Monster that is 2.15 but I couldn't believe the pickup. Felt about 2.12. I think it all depends on the pickup and of course the extra strength

Here she is. What a beauty. 2.14 in the Adam Vogues profile. 33mm edges and 80mm spine in a 2 stripe. Beautifully balanced and a nice bow. In my opinion the ping on this is actually better than my warner profile bat and I have yet to knock it in. Will be doing reviews on both bats shortly. Enjoy

Bow?  Might be my eyes but both look dead straight to me

I prefer the left, more meat in the toe but 2.14/2.15 far too heavy for me. I have a 2.14 in my bag and im knackered after 20 balls! If only i could get these specs in something around 2.10!

The other one is meatier however the final weight with a thicker grip,  oil and extractec is dead on 3lb. This one picks up beautifully because of a higher middle and duck bill toe. But the ping is more responsive than the Warner profile. I'm sure very similar specs can be made to 2.10.  I'll keep the Warner profile for t20s I think

Might have to look in to it next season I dont bat very often on Saturdays but sunday i bat up the order so i tend not to worry to much on the a specifics of a bat and tend not to pay much either. Hence, i own a 4 star Oblivion e41.
