Test series began today NZ overwhelming favorites against a transitioning SL team.
1st Test at Dunedin, SL won the toss and selected to field.
Sri Lanka: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Udara Jayasundera, 3 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Kusal Mendis, 7 Milinda Siriwardana, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Nuwan Pradeep
New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt.), 6 Mitchell Santner, 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Mark Craig/ Neil Wagner, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Trent Boult
Guptill lucky to keep his place, Craig less lucky and axed for Wagner

Guptill lucky to keep his place
Very lucky, and is cashing in!
-
Day of big runs!
400 plus put on.
Mcullum with a quick 78 at an army of 125
Williamson with a solid 88
And the extremely lucky guptil must have edged his way to that 156........
-
I love watching test matches from NZ, something appealing about watching test cricket played on smaller more picturesque cricket grounds after a diet of larger stadiums.

I agree, and same goes for watching tests in England. The grounds are small and always packed (whereas 40,000 people will make the MCG look empty), and are all individual, unlike the generic concrete stadiums in Australia. I was filthy the day they tore down the members stand to replace it with the ghastly stand that they have now. Would love to watch a match of test cricket in Queenstown or Dunedin one day.

Stop being a tool. Guptill averaged like 12 against Australia and prior to this innings had an average under 30, so yes he was lucky to be in the Test side.

Could watch Williamson all day he's that good

DRS is a bit farcical here, no hotspot or ball tracking on that last one, 3rd umpire seemed to want to ignore an obvious bottom edge too.
-
Sri Lankans aren't best pleased, this is the test pitch they're playing on in two days!

Almost as green a pitch compared to that time England played against India at Lords..........where they lost!!
-
Pitch doing the things as expected...
-
One of the greenest wickets I've seen. Ball probably doing a bit too much. Sri Lanka done well not to lose a wicket.
So take it if this test match is over in 3 days, there won't be massive complaints about the pitch
-
that stump hit...

Hasn't really been any excessive swing so far and what was there hasn't kept up for that long..
Can't remember ever seeing the ball edge the stumps before!
-
This wicket should stir up some controversy ...

Great counter attack by Matthews and Siriwardana. Came together after some great Kiwi bowling pressure at 4/121 and prevented a total collapse. Cashing in now that the pitch has settled down a wee bit.

I remember batting once, ball hit the stumps, didn't dislodge a bail, and flew for 4 byes... Made me chuckle
-
Just watched the highlights and a bit off topic but didn't anyone else notice siriwardana wearing a shrey helmet with a masuri stemguard?

it must be the Shrey stemgaurd

Don't know whether this really shows it or not but it is definitely the masuri stem guard

that does look like the Masuri one..good catch
-
Just shocked at how well it seems to fit on, the question is will it work the other way round with the shrey neck guard on a masuri? Especially given the price difference

Brad Haddin did it yesterday in the BBL

Shrey stem guard actually feels more like a hardened plastic covered in cloth. However Masuri stem guard actually shows the real mesh structure. From the picture i am quite sure its a Masuri stem guard.

Went to bad with nz cruising at 50 for 0. Guptil looking imperious.
Woke up and there 60 behind and 1 wicket left.
1) is the doctored pitch costing them?? Aka lords for England vs aus.
And
2) why'd it take Sri lanke so long to use chimeara, quickest on show yet before lunch, 20 overs, he wasn't used once. Nice 5 for once they let him have a crack.
Nz could have been in a much worse condition had they let him have the new ball
-
That's the problem with green tops or pitches that spin square, it can make average bowlers into match winners and can easily backfire. Doesn't happen often though.

They were 80/0 and then 89/4. Ridiculous spell of short bowling and Guptill played a horrific shot to the spinner. Commentary said Chimera isn't trusted with the new pill as he can't land it on the seam.
-
Nz commentators having a field day over a fiver on the outfield!
That wide is worse than harmson's ashes one, he's bowled it from around the wicket and it's gone straight to second slip
-
Can't believe they were going full CH9 over some money on the pitch...
That wide from Boult was like one of mine.
-
Dodgy batch of balls here, 3rd ball in 10 overs
-
And another ball out of shape!
-
What's happened to Trent boult. Lost abit of pace. Is he on the decline?
-
Game is setup nicely for the 4th day ... 42 runs to win with 5 wickets in hand, NZ have to fend off SL for a while.
SL lost the plot with second innings. If they had managed to score 200 to 220, they would have leveled the series ...
-

Coming back from a slipped disc I have been told. Well below is usual standards.

It's strange that in the pink ball test he looks as quick and as good as he has. But the games before vs aus and these 2 against Sri Lanka he's looked lacklustre.
Has he lost the love for the game? And needs something special to lift him.

May be a good break is all he needs ...
-
anyone watching??
Williamson needs 2 for a ton, 3 to be new Zealand's top ever run scorer in a year.
And nz need 24 to win with 5 wickets left.
-
And he's done it!! Williamson is an absolute boss.
Well done.
-
Williamson by far the best test batsmen right now, a man for all conditions!
-
Kane Williamson has been the best no 3 since sanga retired and is truly a magnificent player.
If people have only just noticed now that Williamson is a class act then you need to watch more cricket!
-
Williamson and Root have had amazing years and are really exciting to watch. Class apart

Maybe just merge this to include the ODIs...
Its Christmas Day. I'm going to be watching cricket. This is good.
-
Thank goodness for reviews! Massive sound on that one!
-
23-4 this could be over pretty quickly! Sri Lanka another team on the decline.
-
Was 35 for 6. Now 125 for 6. This too pulling Sri lankanout of a massive hole.
-
Just watching the highlights of the Nz innings...why is McCullum retiring before the t20 WC!
Sri Lanka got a hammering!

Exactly, someone should talk to him and make him understand his role in T20 WC. He is probably going to India in april for IPL. Just go there a month earlier and play T20 WC ... Retire from all forms expect T20 in Feb and retire from T20 format after world cup.
-
Another thrashing in the cards for Sri Lanka.
Getting quite annoying that SL keep winning the toss, rather see Baz tee off
-
Sri lanka not bodding well after the recent retirements.
Very poor.
-
Do I beg for a refund on my Eng/SL ODI tickets?
-
Not sure? It is England, we may have had something go wrong but then.
But I hope we keep gaining momentum in the odis and destroy them
Back to this series? Who reckons this will be dilshans last??
-
56 for 5. To big bumpers. And Matthews gone fending away down leg.
Definately all over....
-
Hmm I think 140 all out
-
Just switched over to the Australia vs Windies test match as I'm not expecting anything special from Sri Lanka! Not that I'm expecting a miracle from Windies either lol

Errr maybe 100 all out then haha, crazy run out

Dilshan has overstayed for a long time now. I expected him to leave first then Mahela followed by Sanga. But the other two have left and he is still around. Given that he is the most experienced player in their line-up, i don't think he is going anywhere ... He would stay until he wants to leave ...
-
Daft runout is just what you need 81 for 6.
There not gonna make 140 here. 3 wickets left.
-
81/8 now .. Lets see if they can make it to 100 ... :o
-
Missus has got twilight on so....... Sky go to the rescue.

24 needed but only 20 left. Could be over this over. Needs to be for Latham not to spoil the party...

118/0 in 8.2 overs => The manner of defeat poses big questions for SL. Bowling attack seems to be completely lost in the absence of Dhammika Prasad. It shouldn't be this bad. End of Angelo's captaincy ??

NZ are preparing for T20 WC in every possible way. They are chasing targets in less than 20 overs in a one day international match !
-
107 meters mega bash enjoyed that
-
I was at the game today... The Sri Lankans were a disgrace!! Posting a poor total they then proceeded with a leg side trap of a leg slip and two others on and behind square. As a bowler how do you bowl to that you have no off side cove so you have to bowl at the body short. Resulted in 2 overs with many wides and 40 odd runs. Despite that Guptils clean hitting is something else! I'm not a big Guptils fan but today he looked like he was playing the under 9s.
-
They should be banned from batting first from now on.
-
When the result of the toss was announced at the ground their was a loud groan, I concur Potzy

I felt sorry for the crowd mate. Every wicket that fell was like a punch in the guts.

Finally NZ win the toss! Least we'll get to see more than 50 overs

Stunning display from the SL top 4 with the bat. How's Gunathilaka's innings!
-
I thought SL was in for a drubbing ... Wake up and see their scorecard is lighting up at 277-2 ! Good sensible batting by Sri Lanka. Dilshan held the innings together and was happy to concede strike to Gunathilaka. He picked up slack when Thirimanne was a little slower earlier on.
On NZ's part many got out in 30's and didn't manage to hang in there. On this wicket 300 to 330 would have been a good score. NZ would have fallen short by 40 runs if not for Southee's blast in the last 5 balls ...
-
Id be lying if I said I wasn't shocked by the result.

Couldn't believe the result when I woke up the morning! Wasn't expecting that at all

He broke new Zealand's fastest t20 50 record, only for Munro to smash all records later that innings.
Nz chased down 143 in 10 overs. Seinlanka have taken some beatings this tour!
