So this year I'll be moving clubs to one much closer to home than my previous one after 9 enjoyable seasons . I thought it would be a good chance to listen to your advice, anecdotes, stories and tips either serious or not about joining a new club and getting through those first few nets awkwardness!
-
I'm in the same boat. Moving so my previous club is too far away
-
I've gone from thinking I'll backtrack and just carry on playing despite not being able to enjoy it as much as I'd wish, to just not bothering to carry on playing... anything to beat starting from scratch with a new team!
How come your moving, is it just distance?
-
Can't really offer any advice but I hope it goes well for both of you!

I kind of did the opposite last season and moved teams to one further from home. My old team used to be a 10 minute drive away and now I travel at least double that depending on traffic but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I had been at my previous club for 6 years prior to moving, but slowly had been enjoying things less and less. Been at my current club for just one season but feels like I have been their years.
Moving clubs is always difficult but it's having the faith to take the step. The first net I find is the worst - walking in without knowing anyone! I kind of know from an early stage of it's the right club for me - I just wish I had made the switch much earlier.
-
The best way to start at a new club is to turn up late to the first game, still drunk from the night before, tell your team mates how awesome you are, inform the opposition team that they all look like they like kiddies just a bit too much, run at least 3 of your batting partners out (including your captain), abuse the umpire for forgetting to bring his seeing eye dog and leave when it's your turn to field as its looking a bit warm out there (not forgetting to slip at least one of your team mates bats into your kitbag on the way out)....
This has worked for me at my last 15 clubs last season, anyway. :D
-
Sound advice @Wickets-then-runs I shall bare them all in mind, it'll be the only way to get a bat collection like some guys on here.
@Maverick79 I'll be going from a 45 minute drive which is about the furthest I drive to any game in our league currently for my home games to less than 5 minutes. I'm genuinely excited about being able to attend midweek nets after work for the first time in years. It'll also be nice to be able to stop and have a social drink or two after the game without knowing I've not got a long trek back. Hoping the change will allow me to bat further up the order and either keep or bowl a few more overs.
-
I think there would be quite a few on here that feel the same way.
Often, time spent at a single club and enjoying your cricket are inversely proportional.
-
It's a move I've been putting off for a few years but I'm 32 this year so thought this was as good a time to start a fresh as any while I'm still able to offer something!

Change of area and where we currently live the schools aren't very good and my son starts next September. I've done a bit of scouting of local clubs and arranged to go along to a few winter nets to see what the standard/people are like

I moved down south four years ago, and initially I wasn't that bothered about playing league cricket anymore, as I played for a friendly playing team in Somerset, which I loved.
But ended up at a nice club, beautiful ground on the only hill in Oxfordshire ,(challow) the club was going through lots of changes though, they'd lost loads of players, even found myself bowling 17 overs the first game?? I've not bowled for 20 yrs,ha
Anyway, more players were leaving, just to be replaced by juniors who despite their over confidence in their abilities, we're just dragging the club down, they didn't pay subs or socialise etc.
So after two seasons I left.
I'd been asked to play for a team in Somerset, and was considering that, when I was asked to net for my current club
First indoor nets a little awkward, especially once they'd seen me bat,( I do hit straight, and do try to kill bowlers in their follow throughs)
But, lovely set of blokes, the youngsters were keen and polite, and some have serious ability
Two seasons in, I would never think of moving,,, when I finish playing, I will umpire/score whatever
It's proper village cricket in a stunning setting
One thing I'd say, is go for it, enjoy every bit of it
My oldest and dearest friends are all from cricket

I are moving as well for the same reasons although I don't want to but had enough of travelling my 2015 home ground was 1 hour away from where I live and away grounds even further staying in the WCL new home ground will be 5 Min's away also been offerred a lift to away matches and agreed to pay teammates match fee and tea money can get to nets easily help at the ground and have a couple of drinks after home matches knowing I won't have to drive.
Also considering taking up the offer of organising new clubs 2016 Cricketforce day

To me 2 different reasons to move club
1) to improve your overall enjoyment of game which can be less travelling, better social side etc
2) to test yourself at better standard in s club with better facilities etc
It's a question of priority. Which aspect is most important to the individual?
It's quite nerve wrecking but also it maybe the chance to meet new friends that enjoy the game and talking about it in the bar afterwards.

In theory the standard will be the same although battling relegation compared to promotion as the new team will be in the same division as my last team (facing an old team could be a different topic altogether!) however they currently only run one team where as my old lot had a 1st team in the top division. I have been offered to net with a team about 20 mins away in a higher league but worry that I'll only be a bits and pieces player. Whereas I'd hope to be a bit more than that.
-
Got to figure out why you are playing I think. To get a bat and a bowl each week or want to win things. In good teams likelihood is unless u r the gun player you'll contribute less often as games are won in an easier manner. Winning is enjoyable which is enough for some people.
With a team that is struggling there is the likelihood that you will get more chances to contribute and show ur talents which will help integration into a new club.

Would like to win but not that bothered if we don't or if I don't bowl win or lose just want to play an innings whether it's playing for a draw or going for the win
-
I want to play cricket and feel that it's been worth the match fee and subs, let alone the time it takes up! Never been someone who'd rather make up the numbers to claim success. I'm hoping that being closer to my new club will allow me to take a full role whether that's on or off the field, that unfortunately starting a family and taking on extra responsibility at work meant that it allowed me less and less to do that at my previous club.
-
Should join us Kenny, that way you would know half the team before you started. Ashorne must be closer than Shipston ;-)

@uknsaunders Ill come when you get your bridge sorted!

I'm joining a new club next season, looking forward to a new adventure so to speak, new people, new beer to drink, a good standard of cricket, and hooefully get me enjoying it incredibly

Best of luck @tommo256

I moved from a club that was a 3 minute walk from home to a club that's a 10min drive but I haven't looked back really. Much better group of guys, better social side of the club as well. Maybe if I have kids I'd move back to the old club but it'd be a hard decision to make. Ive found that no matter how many clubs you go to, there will always be politics and clique groups

Your right win or lose playing has to be worth the match fee, subs and time invested On or off the field no good just turning out to make up the numbers and claiming to be successful that seems shallow win or lose its much more enjoyable when we as individual players contribute.

Always admired players in any sport who potentially shunned outright success in a team they were not playing a role in, just to play week in week out.
Anyways it looks like my new clubs nets will be starting soon according to their Facebook page, so the new net awkwardness will be starting soon!
-
My new club nets commence next Sunday problem for me is when I bat in indoor nets I am rubbish
-
At least you're in a position where you will know the faces of the majority there mate, make small talk about last season, how it went personally, what you'd like to achieve this season coming that sort of stuff. "Yer I've always liked your ground" general stuff. You're in a better position than most with moving but embrace it! Just wish you'd decided to drive an extra few miles to me but understand going there.
Good luck and don't forget to text me letting me know how it went
P.S I'm gutted I'll be missing the game against you :(
-

Just seen this... See you next season then
-
Cheers @19reading87, DM me about a beer soon with @uknsaunders.
I read from your agm minutes a bridge repair was in the pipe line. Looking forward to coming to your place now you've got covers

Ahead of what should be a first full season with the club I joined late last year, I am twiddling my fingers most days looking at our my emails/Pitchero site keeping an eye out for info on winter nets. I kinda wanna bug the people at the top regarding it but as I still don't really know the team (they're all fairly well knit) it's probably a bit douchey.
Hope to take in a few pointers from the captain as well, kind of bloke I warm to; supportive but will give you a rollicking if you mess up, if only because he likes to win. Remember my first game where he got out early and just heard him effing and blinding in the showers about it, ha.
-
So tonight is the night that I'm at my new nets. Not quite sure how I feel about it a cross between job interview nerves and excitement!
Anyways was discussing today in work what my first shot should be...
Should it be an exaggerated leave, forward defensive, scoop/ramp or wild charge down the wicket?!?
-
Exaggerated leave aslong as its on the stumps. That will impress them.
In all seriousness(which is strange from me) is play the ball on merit. I wild shot first up may make them believe your a hot head that will throw it away at any minute.
Obviously if you are that. Fair play.
-
I'd say just play your natural game, one of the new guys at my club's first winter nets last week just played the way he would normally, he certainly impressed me.
-
I had nets on Sunday with my ( likely) new team.
I'm 42, fat, and hate batting in nets.
Whereas the next oldest was probably about 25 ( with most in late teens/ early twenties), and had as much extra body weight as a biafran

Can relate to what you have written went to my new clubs nets the other Sunday the eldest there was about 35 years younger than me they were all throwing themselves around the sports hall to stop the ball and there was me with a dodgy knee....
-
To @Seniorplayer and @spoonbed
The impotent question is how did you both get on? Play well and Impress?? Played to your ability? Or was the pressure to much and had a mare??
It sounds daft to some but when I've left to join a new side(I'm on my 4th club but have been here for about 10 years now) it's always been made easier by being mid season. So the straight into a game situation has seemed easier to me than showing up at that first net and all eyes being on me.
-
My preferred route would have been to be thrust straight into a game scenario.
Outside, I think I can hold my own at the level I play ( which isn't great to be honest!), but I really do not like batting in the nets( probably because after 5 mins I'm blowing like a steam train)
-
Agree with you both straight into a match is best as I can't bat at nets under the lights with no time between balls to compose yourself with the bowlers queueing up and the ball flying around only really interested in hitting balls that I can play from the crease as don't want to waste energy chasing wide balls tend to leave more than i play followed by spending time gathering up the balls that's not been played at from the net behind the stumps and throwing them back to the bowlers.
So batted to my ability I guess.
-
I feel somewhat more inclusive now I've been added to the club's Whatsapp group, hah. Small things.
Club nets start Thursday with I'm ridiculously excited for, if only to be netting on a consistent weekly basis. Also got an email earlier regarding tour, it's all coming together...
-
So I turned up tonight to find only 2 other chaps there, wasn't quite the turn out I expected. However they both made me feel very welcome and apologised for the lack of a turn out. Bowled alright early up but wasn't so good after batting, didn't help it was to a leftie. Batting felt good despite the long winter months. First ball I miscued a strong forward defensive straight back over his head (oops!) for probably 4.
Glad to have had a good session and looking forward to the new season.
