Title: Help - Tour advice needed - Flights
Post by: plumb111 on January 19, 2016, 11:18:08 AM
Hi Guys,

So I am organising a cricket tour to Malta. This has all been set up regarding fixtures etc I was just looking for some advice for flights.

I am unsure as to what is the best and most cost effective way of getting some cricket gear out there. I know on previous tours we have taken one large cricket bag of stuff and just shared it. But no one is sure of the cost to get this on a ryanair flight!  Does anyone have any experience of this?

Please help!

Cant speak for Ryanair, but most reasonable airlines have a sports bag policy, and as long as you discuss with the airline in advance and book it in, every player should be able to bring a sports bag in addition to their normal luggage. There is a charge of course but its far less than if you just roll up to the airport with no prior warning and get sent to the oversized luggage queue.

Travel Agent here who has cricket toured to Malta about 5 times.

Fill a large bag with whatever kit you want to take (e.g three sets of kit) and weigh it, then purchase the corresponding weight for an extra bag and split the cost between all of you, shouldn't be more than a couple of quid per bag each. Repeat this for however many bags you want to take.

I know the guys out there pretty well so they usually let us just borrow their kit.

Be prepared to do lots of running between the wickets as the outfield is horrifically slow and don't wear spikes as they only have an astro strip. Say hello to Maestro for me (you'll know who he is, trust me).

Paceville is a pretty decent night out depending on the time of year, though if you're unlucky it will be full of drunken underage Italian kids. There are a few bars and restaurants on the St Julian's Bay side overlooking the water which are just superb. I suppose you don't have to take your well known brand of thigh pads as there are plenty of places about that advertise them and they are all pretty decent.

I'm sure you'll have a great time, are you playing against Marsa/Malta or another touring side?

Hi Mate,

We would be playing against Marsa and also another touring side Graces CC.

I am speaking with Ryanair at the moment and they are saying i cannot take any pieces of luggage over 20kg so would need to take numerous bags of 20kg weight.

i dont know how much cricket stuff you can squeeze into a 20kg limit.

Who did you deal with when touring to Malta?

Yeah there's only one cricket ground in the country, it's in Marsa sports club next to the golf course.

The international side's ex-skipper is a mate and used to play for us when he lived in England. He's moved back to Malta now so he sorts us out whenever we go.

We found that once you took into account sports bags it was worth flying with BA or the like as larger bags were part of the price, and so was food & drink on the plane!

I'd agree with this. Once you lump in extras such as bags and card payment fees and whatever 99% of the time you're better off flying with a normal carrier, the exception being Norwegian Air Shuttle who operate many flights out of London with all that jazz included at some very low prices.

IIRC however with Malta, Air Malta flights are relatively expensive and the BA flights don't operate daily, so you end up having to stay or come back later or earlier than you want to.

@Woodyspin you'll reasonably pay around £150 for flights and same again for a hotel for about 4 nights. Marsa charge 200 euros for a game I believe. Food and drink is relatively inexpensive though.

So far for us the cost is 139PP which includes 4 nights accommodation bed and breakfast, transfers to the hotel from the airport and to matches on the friday and the sunday.

Also includes the price of the matches one 40 over game on the friday and one round robin T20 on the sunday with lunch on these days.

Just need to get our flights which without luggage at the moment are about 80 quid from Luton, just trying to work out this whole luggage situation.

Yeah, if you mean that even less people follow the rules there!

I have a lot of family in Malta so have been 20-30 times.

I have never felt safe once in a car, they are maniacs!

Our md is Maltese and makes us get the extra super cover insurance so covered for any dings etc

When you ask for it they just laugh and say "you know how we drive then"

Apart from roundabouts I'm good as it's a free for all then

I've done 10-12 overseas tours and depending on the airline we split or book an extra sports bag - usually about £30ish

I won't fly with Ryanair, but went to Malta with Air Malta, used easyjet loads, BA etc

Although you can easily split 4 of everything amongst a party of 15 or so and be within the limit

Some lads seem to tour with a pair of pants and not much else.
