Vacuum Grip Applicator DIY Guide
Step one:
Go to your hardware store and puchase:
- 1x 250mm long 50mm diameter pvc tubing
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f192/steffanlangholz/8100%209813300.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/steffanlangholz/media/8100%209813300.jpg.html)
- 1x multiplier 50mm
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f192/steffanlangholz/8100%209813283.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/steffanlangholz/media/8100%209813283.jpg.html)
- 1x decrease diameter from 50mm to 32mm (or whatever size your vacuumcleaners pipe is.
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f192/steffanlangholz/8100%209813293.jpg) (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/steffanlangholz/media/8100%209813293.jpg.html)
- 1x roll of insulation tape if you dont have it
Step two:
- Measure the length needed for your grip setup (harrow, SH or LH would be different)
- The pipe has to go on both ends of the multiplier, so you need to cut it, i used a hacksaw. Measure how much you need.
- The decreaser goes on the other opening (the 45 degree pipe)
Step three:
- Put it all together, tape any connection, sand down the edges and try it out!.

Haha that's class! Good job mate :D
-
This is my most favourite think I have seen on here in ages.
right down to the fact I was irritated by the bar code sticker still being on the pipe!!!
-
Where did you buy your piping from, was it from one of the larger DIY stores?
I fancy giving this a go :)

If it didn't work, I wanted to be able to return it ;-)
-
Just a random one.. In Denmark it is called jem&fix ;-)
-
This looks really easy to do, thanks for this thread!!

Any plumbers merchants (Graham's, PTS etc.) or DIY store like Screwfix/B&Q/Wickes will stock it pal

Tried it on octopus! Succes!

This is awesome. Definitely giving it a go

Next guy who makes it, should make a video!

Quality, if someone makes one from parts off the internet, could they list them here with the URL please? Then we can all have one without 20 trips to Wicks.
-
Get wicks/b&q/hardware shop on the forum as a sponsor, see if we can get some discount on parts!!!

Plumbing terms for materials is 2 inch pipe
2 inch tee
2 inch to 1 1/4 reducer.
I'd use solvent weld joints too instead of push fit, won't move about then.

-
Actually you sure it's 50mm/2" pipe? I'm not sure you'd get a grip over a 2" end.
1 1/2 might be better.

I think 1 1/2" is right Kev.
-
It's 50mm. Very sure of it.
-
I made mine to fit the second and third grip if needed. And all my grips worked well with it. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160223/7c3ad7e9ee827f89fcd307cd76041041.jpg)

Brilliant! Well played.
-
Great idea. Just wouldn't of thought you'd get a grip to stretch over a 50mm pipe

Might be difficult with a thick spiral, but octo and scales worked fine so far. The GM one is not much smaller though. Think its 45.

Brilliant idea and awesome execution

Genius. Great job and this give me a perfect weekend project while wife is away.

Hats off to you!

Almost the perfect article! The ONLY thing that lets it down a little is the toe shot in the last pic! ???
Apart from that, this is genius! Today...invention for the perfect grip applicator. Tomorrow.....out-invent Dyson!

My what a strong left hand you have there Quagmire ;)
-
brilliant. you are the Macgyver of cricket. Whats the next project?
No idea. I was just sick of my Gm not functioning properly. Took it apart, matched the measurements with the pvc, tried drilling and assembling first, but that was very bad. Second time around I tried this.. Basic idea is, enough suction, and every grip will expand. And ofc, everybody should be able to make and use- unlike the ones in the factories, and easy grip etc.
-
My what a strong left hand you have there Quagmire ;)
I'm a physio by day.. Should have strong hands :-P
-
Looking forward to seeing the variations on this once the forum members start creating their own versions.
-
I'm going to wrap mine in chrome vinyl!
-
Very useful way of doing it. Wish this was done before Saturday, spent my evening applying a second grip to my 3 and I'm super picky about how I like it; don't like anything above the handle and like the top grip to cover the bottom completely. Cue several attempts with the bat cone before having to squish it up/down etc and my thumbs being blood red afterwards
-
so all in, how much did it cost you?
-
75 kr = round 8 pounds. Not counting the vacuum cleaner, hacksaw, sanding paper for the rough edge.
-
Got a lot of loving for this thread being an "inventor" type myself. Top work @SteffanLangholz
-
Thanks buddy, means a lot :) Sent you a pm by the way!

You're very welcome. I am working on a YouTube tutorial atm, but since this is my first of the kind, it takes time!
Bunnings would always be cheaper than what I would be able to find in Denmark unfortunately, loved bunnings when I toured down under!

I like that idea. Only issue is if the entire front page of a section ends up being stickies. That said the topics would all be worth reading. We'll have a think about that.

Sorry to resurrect this but was hoping for some additional advice. I have built a similar "gadget" for the club in metal and have it working off the vacuum cleaner thanks to Steffan. However, I really want it to be more self contained so am looking for a suitable vacuum pump but have no idea how powerful it would need to be. I have seen various different ones on the Bay of E and need to know if 2.5-3 CFM would be powerful enough. Would something like this work:

Create a seperate section for such threads, so they don't vanish.

Thought about this. But with my vacuum on low, it still doesn't suck enough. Especially for the tricky grips.

That's what worries me. Do you get much air leakage from the joints and connections? I have welded mine up and the only part where it can leak air would be where the rubber grip goes over the metal tube so was hoping a pump like this would work, but don't want to waste the money if its a non starter. The commercial versions of these that I have seen don't seem to have a massive pump so hopefully someone else would have built one and will be able to advise on the power required.
-
I have no leakage.. At all actually!

B3 cricket use a similar pump. So hopefully @The Doctor or @procricket B3 can confirm.

Come into a slight issue with mine.
My dyson!
It has a valve that opens when it detects a blockage, so it sucks the grip a quarter of the way and then. Boom, the valve opens and all pressure lost.
I need to find a shot Hoover or a vacuum pump.

Well, I have now acquired a vacuum pump from the Bay of E for the princely sum of £35 and its works brilliantly! The most difficult part is getting the grip stretched over both ends of the tube (I used 45mm tubing which may be too small for double grips, I hope not but time will tell)
For anyone else trying to do something similar I bought a 3CFM 1/4hp pump and its more than powerful enough. They seem to go for anything between £25 and £55 but if you hang around you can get one at a reasonable price.
This whole thing has cost me about £50 which includes pump, metal, welding, paint and felt base protector (so it doesn't scratch the Mrs' kitchen table!), which is probably more than most people would want to spend but as this is going to be used by a number of people I wanted to build something fairly robust.

Good luck.
I purchased a small vacuum pump in an attempt to make a small carry round item. Unfortunately I either have a leak or the pump isn't good enough.
Will try get some pictures up this week.

I bought a 12v compressor, and epoxy welded a 4mm output to the air intake. Keeping the compressor function, but allowing for a vacuum to take place. Hopefully. Epoxy drying as we speak.

Ignore the long stainless tube and the excessive clear pipe. My stainless cutter is in the van so it's just like this for testing. Pipes will be curt down and meet each other were they currently are.
Idea was that's a 12 volt vacuum pump, so was gonna firstly have a fag lighter wire on it to use from your car, and at a latter date retro fit it with a 12 volt rechargeable battery.
Quite compact, not heavy and just makes abit of noise.

But currently struggling to get enough pull to stretch a grip enough.
Not sure if there's a leak, the tubing is to long, or the pump just isnt manly enough.
Hoping to do more testing next weekend.
-
Mine does have enough pull, 250 watts. But it doesnt pull quick enough to make up for the slight leak at the ends of the grip.
I've tried with my hands on each side, and it works perfectly.. Not sure what to do now.
-
Bigger tubing would lead to a tighter pull of the grip, the GM grip applicator also has some ribs on the ends to help with the seal I'd imagine.
-
I have a 3 CFM pump and a 50mm tube this will pretty much do anything and will cope with leaky grips. I did try various pumps before opting for the current one and anything that was either hand or battery driven didn't seem able to cope. Have done around a hundred grips with my setup and it has coped with every type of grip. Let me know if you want more info.

Yeah, thats a better solution, but too expensive for me. It would set me back £70 with shipping. Cant seem to find anything local that goes without water..

It seems the end of the tube isn't creating a seal(maybe GM we're onto something with the ridges).
I used electrical tape to get a seal and the vacuum is pulled perfectly.
Vid coming up.

Then a new question arises. How to make a seal that works every time? Without tape that is.

Make a slight groove in the tube to allow an o ring to sit in?

Apparently I had a leak at the valve. I'm still using the original pvc setup, as I don't know a plumber or blacksmith. Loads of tape, and now it's perfect!
Might have to make a permanent seal though.
