Title: my first training session
Post by: LeonieKelly18 on April 08, 2016, 08:31:21 PM
After nearly 2 years of being injured and being told about 4times that I won't ever play again, I had my first training session yesterday and had NO pain!!!
But god my throw has gone to hel and I'm slightly afraid of the ball, which I've never experience before and I've been hit in the face(nose /mouth). No I wasn't trying to eat it.

Has anyone got tips or tricks to get back used to everything??

Great you're back playing. Just give it time, it will all come back to you. Start off slowly and progress at a pace that's comfortable. As they say, don't run before you can walk.

The more you practice the better you get and the more confidence you become and therefore less afraid.

It's still very much on the low, very nervous and feels strange. I used to feel so comfortable on the field and now it feels scary haha.
but you're right I just need to take my time.

very true, still need make sure certain movements don't hurt. Think I might be over thinking a lot

Just keep practicing and you'll soon get back into it. Give it a few sessions and it will be like you were never away.

Wait, this is CBF... This gives you an excuse to buy at least 2 new bats, and probably replace all your kit just for good measure  ;)

To be honest I am way to happy with my gear. Would need new shoes which I can sort via work and I need a helmet. But other than that WAY to happy.

I just need to get used to it again. But right now I feel like a donkey without legs ahhaha

Seconded. A new bat will stop your face hurting, surprised they don't prescribe it on the NHS tbh.

Other than that, hours and hours and hours on the bowling machine.

Good to be back though, right?  ;)

The face was years ago. Shall I throw the whole story in so it gives a bit more of a sob story.?

Yes if I was allowed to. The only girl when there are 3 mens teams.  The main bats men face the bowling machine.

Amazing to be back.
As soon as they told me I couldnt play again I got my jersey number tattooed on my back. I never wanted to lose it .

Yes. It's very easy to over think  it start  by doing what you know you can do without pain and build your  game from there.

Great to hear you're getting back to into cricket after being told that news.

I had my first net the other week and my reactions are soooo slow, I also found I was hurting in muscles I never usually hurt the day afterwards e.g. sides and back and just generally achey all over.

Not sure what advice to give but every time a ball was coming down I was just trying to focus and watch it all the way onto the bat, as well as that I was trying to get my feet moving properly again.

Will be nice to hear how your other session go :)

Keep practicing mate. That's the only way you are going to get into the mode of playing. If you have a rope + ball setup at home, then it would good to practice 10 mins a day just hitting the ball. It will help remind your hands of the muscle memory when playing shots ...

Ah right, I thought you'd been hit yesterday. In that case you've got nothing to worry about, it must have just been "Ring rust" and nerves. Not a technique/mental problem as I first thought.

Only the main bats get to go on the machine? That's not cool! Shout up, if anything, the main bats need less practice!

Tattooed your jersey number on your back? That's pretty badass! See the thread below for Forumites artwork. Not sure you'd qualify for the "Beards" element though 😄

Na the face happened during fielding, knocked me out, broke my nose and torn my lip. I still can't properly move my lips ( every image you get in your head, it's not like that.) You can't see it though.
But I went out to bat later that day.

But now I've had full ankle ligament reconstruction, after 3 years of going to hospitals with ankle pain and getting told I was over reaction. 3 hospital's including the professional sports hospital so where the Dutch football players go etc.
everyone told me to keep playing and stop moaning. At a certain point I got rum out and I walked of and didn't go near my captain and walked up to my parents who were watching took my gear of and cried... I was in so much pain, I was so tired. I was done with it.
My dad got me to go with him to his physio, and he looked at me once. And sent me straight away to the surgeon. Within 2 months I had surgery.

Now after all that turned out my legs had been over compensating so long for trying to not have pain, that I have cartilage damage in both knees and both ankles.

So it's mostly scary due to the association of pain. And just not had a cricket ball come at me at speed for a while.

Ahw I know what you mean!! I felt like a slug a hahaha!  If you have muscle ache make sure you stretch properly and drink enough water to get the Lactic acid moving.

I'm lucky that my physio has trained me so hard I didnt get muscle ache.

Did you as fit as me? Like NOT AT ALL?

I'll send updates

You should try using your hands to catch the ball, not your face 😜

I'm fortunate that I've never been hit, the worst I've had is edging the ball into my box. Very rarely bounces above waist height in Yorkshire and I'm a touch player, never play pulls so no chance of the ball getting anywhere near my face!

The important thing is that you're now pain free and playing! Crank the machine up to 95mph Brett Lee bouncers!

On the plus side you stopped the ball so not a total fail

I've not netted yet with season 2 weeks away as work been taking me everywhere but played indoor over winter so your ahead of me this year

Depends on where your confidence is lowest batting or bowling/fielding

It was one of those over used football fields. And it had a funny bounce so it went past my hands under my nose.

Hahaha you just mean to say the Yorkshire lads don't have enough power right?

Haha, I shouldn't say it anyways. If the Yorkshire nomads see that I'll have trouble in Poland.

Never dive away for a ball always give it your all.
Since I was a itty bitty tiny girl (been going to the cricket club since I was 2 weeks old)  I've been told to never let a ball pass me.
So I didn't

Have fun in Poland! Go see Kraków if you get a chance. Amazing place and mental nightlife!

I admire your bravery. You'll find me hiding at fine leg for my own safety.  :D

Let us know how you get on.

We are in warshaw, if I get the chance I'll go check it out.

I just got a phone call from my physio, 2 more weeks of testing during practise and then he says if it goes well, that I'm back.
FULLY BACK!
