So this winter I couldn't motivate myself to do the 80 mile round trip to the nearest cricket store for a toe guard. My season is due to start tomorrow can anybody recommend something to protect the toe in the absence of a guard? Thanks

Outdoor wood varnish
Yacht varnish
Linseed oil
Bat wax
PVA glue
Shoe goo

Google shoe goo and have a look at this video https://youtu.be/Z_e3AFndzmM

Short term :linseed
Long term ie four coats of yacht varnish letting each one dry

Ronseal yacht varnish seals the toe and repels water.

Dont hit the ground

Apart from toe guards which I don't like I have always used shoe goo.
I wondering if someone who has used the goo and a varnish, what do you find the advantage of one over the other.
I would assume the goo helps more with the physical damage? but the varnish would look better??

Thanks. I've used Ronseal decking varnish as a temporary solution. I'll aquire some Shoe goo before next week

I definitely prefer shoo goo to boat varnish, but it also takes a few more goes to get the hang of it.

I prefer outdoor varnish as it's easier to apply cleanly. It might need re-applying every few weeks but it takes a few seconds with next to no effort. It's also diet cheap at about £3.50 a ton which lasts forever

This is my shoe goo method. Works really well.
