Just heard on radio. Indefinite break for personal reasons apparently.
I guess with that in mind, Borthwick will come in at 3 for Pakistan series?
-
I'd presume he's already been told he's not to be in the Pakistan squad.
Otherwise if there was a chance, surely he'd be out there trying to score runs.
-
Borthwick notched up two single figure scores in the latest County Chanpionship game, what happens if he goes on a bad run now? He goes into the Pakistan series out of form and potentially does a Compton and the media go mad. Just a thought, but England should have put him in to the team during the Sri Lanka series.
-
hoping Compdog gets a break, and comes back refreshed.Prob needs a bit of technical help somewhere along the line.
I know NC is perhaps not a favourite on this forum, but it's a tough game at club level. God knows what they go thru as a pro...the spotlight is always on somebody.
His England career is prob over now but he's got in there any had a go.
Taylor and now Compton for different reasons, there's certainly a gap in the batting order for someone to fill.....
Borthwick? maybe,,,

Hopefully this is not another depression related issue as with Trott. This would raise huge concerns regarding the pressures of professional sports.
Yes there were question marks over the severity of Trott's depression, however, anything preventing you from doing your day job is a massive issue.
I wouldn't want to be in a position where I was unable to complete my job and have to leave.
Although a career in professional sport is the boyhood dream, it seems this is far from the case for those who have made it.
As for who is to replace him?
Ian Bell - Who, in my opinion, was dropped rather harshly and what England need right now is a bit of experience in the ranks
-
Agree with this! Get Ian bell back in!
-
Sport isn't pressure, try being shot at for pressure (which makes me laugh in games when people sledge me about pressure :) )
Sad to see though, has to raise questions on professional sport but I bet it won't
-
Getting dropped for Pakistan series would have sounded a lot better than an indefinite break ! Waiting to see what is his real reason for this break ...

I disagree that there's no pressure in sport, at least at the professional level. For professional athletes it's their job so it's perfectly understandable that there's an inherent level of stress associated with it, more so when you're not performing to the levels you want/need to because your performances will effect your earning potential
Cricket as a sport has one of the highest suicide rates going for ex professionals, that has to show there's a certain degree of stress or mental pressure involved 0

I didn't say zero pressure, I just said it doesn't compare to real pressure like a war zone etc

A quick google search will most likely give you a list of names but this is quite a good article on it:

Most jobs allow you to go on stress leave. I suppose the realisation that you will never play test cricket again would be pretty stressful. Having a break is fine but he now needs to address his goals and be happy playing first class cricket for the rest of his career (e.g. Brad Hodge).
I'm shocked at the suicide stats.

Wow . Watching the sky commentators disect Compton's technique in the Sri Lanka series was like reading writing on the wall . He does need to fix a few things but I would have thought a few county games would be the best remedy . Must be gutted though , hes been in and out of the test side -must feel like he's been doing the hokey pokey .

Could Jason Roy now be considered for the test team? Yes, I know many are referring to his recent scores as mickey mouse cricket. Still relatively young so has a few years in him, not just going to be there for 2/3 years, unless form deserts him. In addition to this, he would fit right into the South African born - English cricketer mould!
He is now an established player in the England team. He could either bat at 3 or push Hales to 3 (where Hales normally bats) and let Roy open.
This may then counter the slow scoring rate of Cook. What England are crying out for is a Warner-esque opening batsman to put 50 on in the first 10 overs.
As I said earlier in the post, there isn't a lot of options available to England at the moment. Bell possibly being the only option.

Roy doesn't even open in county cricket he's not a test openers cousin

If (and at the moment it's a big if!) you were going to even consider him as a Test player it would be batting down the order at 5/6/7, he's doing great as a white ball opener but I've seen nothing to suggest he'd do even remotely well as a Test batsman up the order and to be honest I haven't seen much to suggest he'd do that well down the order in Test cricket, his FC record isn't fantastic for someone who doesn't really do any bowling.
-
Someone who doesn't bowl much, he does still have a better first class bowling average than Moeen Ali! ;)
I think I'm right in saying that over the past 2/3 seasons Roy's first class form has been much better than for the rest of his career in fairness, so his numbers will clearly improve. Saw him make his first fc ton 2 years ago I think and he's now got 6, for example. Could see him getting in at 5 at some stage if he continues to make one day runs and keeps improving in first class, but he'll probably need a bit of luck with a spot opening up and a big run of county form coming at the same time.

I've already made my feelings known regarding Moeen's place in the team on numerous other threads :D
I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge regarding Roy's recent FC form, with living up north and not having Sky Sports I can only read scorecards and stats. But in my defense the original post said "Could Jason Roy now be considered for the test team?" and you surely must agree that the answer is no, he couldn't/shouldn't be considered for the test team now, in the future, if his FC form continues on the up then possibly in the middle order but as much as I am a fan of his in white ball cricket he isn't a Test match opening batsman by any stretch of the imagination is he?

Yeah that's completely fair, it'd be a big shock if he was picked for the test team right now. Although just after I made my last post I read Farbrace has been saying Roy can do well in tests! Given that he's young and still improving all the time, I don't see any reason why he couldn't end up in the test team, but fair to say he hasn't made the weight of FC runs to demand selection yet. Time will tell, a 5/6/7 of Roy/Stokes/Bairstow would be pretty good to watch though!

I don't see why he couldn't, in time, end up playing test match cricket, Hales was pegged as a short form specialist too but I thought he looked a lot more assured in this test series, albeit against a pretty ordinary bowling attack. I just find a lot of people get carried away when someone performs well in one format and automatically assumes they'll perform well in another, I remember last summer a lot of people were calling for Morgan to bat at 5 in tests again because he was playing well in ODI cricket but it just doesn't work like that, same with people this year calling for Buttler to come back at 7 in tests when he hasn't hit a red ball in 12 months.
-
yes.....Roy has a great talent and in the one day game on flat tracks he has all the shots.
If you look at Hales there may be a clue thou. the new Warner? nothing like it. Warner is exceptionally talented to go after the bowling like he does.
England I guess have stuck with Hales because he is learning how to play Test cricket, that is, he's worked out he cannot smash good bowling(im not talking about sri lanka's attack)....he plays himself in.
So maybe that's why England want Hales-he can adapt and tighten up outside off. If he continues that against Pakistan quality attack he could be a success.
Roy may be in the same boat. Yes brilliant to watch when he going, facing high class bowling is a different story thou.
But I don't want to put a downer on this thread :) potential is there and it's great to watch in the one day stuff
-
The only reason I suggested Roy opening or 3 is that the rest of the squad seems pretty settled at the moment.
What the team is lacking is runs at the top of the order, to take the pressure off the likes of Root, Bairstow etc.
I am not trying to say the Roy should be a certainty nor can I vouch for his ability, as many others have said, his FC stats aren't the best, not is he considered a top order batsmen... But neither was Pietersen...
With the lack of cricket due to the weather, it may be difficult to choose a batsman for the next test series, looking at the CC top run scorers below, it could be anyone?
J Hildreth - Too old for selection now I would imagine. Has always scored runs though.
S Robson - Possibly in the same boat as Compton (I would argue Robson never got a fair shot)
S Borthwick - Seems to be the next man in line, got thrown in at the deep end for his test debut, has he improved? Only one way to find out.
J Trott - Only suggesting this because he is scoring runs again, surely can't be considered.
D Bell-Drummond - A name that has been mentioned a few times recently by Sky, surely too young to be considered yet.
As a side note, it wouldn't appear Bell is in much form so may not be considered.
Interesting times ahead for the test squad, the selectors under scrutiny again.
-
same with people this year calling for Buttler to come back at 7 in tests when he hasn't hit a red ball in 12 months.
Instead of starting a new thread, I was watching the ODI the other day and was curious as to why Buttler has the gloves for the ODI, but Bairstow has them for Tests (Yes I know Buttler isn't in the test team)
Surely ODI's are closer to Test format than T20? So surely you would want your Test keeper behind the stumps? Surely your best keeper is your Test keeper?
I wouldn't say that Buttler stands out as a better keeper than Bairstow, I think everyone knows they are both average.
With that said, Bairstow has impressed as a fielder, maybe Buttler is crap?

I think it's partly down to Buttler being nailed on as an ODI pick whereas Bairstow perhaps only has his starting spot due to Taylor's unfortunate retirement. Either that or they think Buttler is the better keeper generally but that the difference between Bairstow and Buttler's test batting means it's worth the slight drop in keeping ability to get the significant improvement in batting?
Also regarding Buttler's fielding, he's a very decent outfielder, he rarely got the gloves at Somerset when Kieswetter was around so has done a good bit of fielding.
-
thats something that always intrigued me, why do keepers when they're not keeping field in the outfield, id have thought slips would have been natural to them being a keeper or is it to prevent hand damage so they're stuck out of the way?

Oh my life.. A few runs in white ball and suddenly a test player !! Words fail.. Hales isn't a test standard player let alone Roy. My god cricket is doomed if this is the best we have for test cricket.

Downer...
I know it's mid-season, but doesn't anyone have any new willow to show? Think we all need cheering up!

According to sources Compton has been suffering from mental and physical challenges. Due to which he took indefinite break from Cricket. But he will return soon because he simply loves cricket and cannot stay aloof from the excitement of the game for long.
-
I think that's correct you could see how intense he was at the crease lets hope he comes back stronger or at least enjoys his cricket
