Compton announces break from cricket
« on: June 23, 2016, 05:04:44 PM »

Just heard on radio. Indefinite break for personal reasons apparently.

I guess with that in mind, Borthwick will come in at 3 for Pakistan series?

I'd presume he's already been told he's not to be in the Pakistan squad.

Otherwise if there was a chance, surely he'd be out there trying to score runs.

Borthwick notched up two single figure scores in the latest County Chanpionship game, what happens if he goes on a bad run now? He goes into the Pakistan series out of form and potentially does a Compton and the media go mad. Just a thought, but England should have put him in to the team during the Sri Lanka series.

hoping Compdog gets a break, and comes back refreshed.Prob needs a bit of technical help somewhere along the line.

I know NC is perhaps not a favourite on this forum, but it's a tough game at club level. God knows what they go thru as a pro...the spotlight is always on somebody.

His England career is prob over now but he's got in there any had a go.

Taylor and now Compton for different reasons, there's certainly a gap in the batting order for someone to fill.....

Borthwick?  maybe,,,

Hopefully this is not another depression related issue as with Trott. This would raise huge concerns regarding the pressures of professional sports.

Yes there were question marks over the severity of Trott's depression, however, anything preventing you from doing your day job is a massive issue.

I wouldn't want to be in a position where I was unable to complete my job and have to leave.

Although a career in professional sport is the boyhood dream, it seems this is far from the case for those who have made it.

As for who is to replace him?

Ian Bell - Who, in my opinion, was dropped rather harshly and what England need right now is a bit of experience in the ranks

Sport isn't pressure, try being shot at for pressure (which makes me laugh in games when people sledge me about pressure :) )

Sad to see though, has to raise questions on professional sport but I bet it won't

Getting dropped for Pakistan series would have sounded a lot better than an indefinite break ! Waiting to see what is his real reason for this break ...

I disagree that there's no pressure in sport, at least at the professional level. For professional athletes it's their job so it's perfectly understandable that there's an inherent level of stress associated with it, more so when you're not performing to the levels you want/need to because your performances will effect your earning potential

Cricket as a sport has one of the highest suicide rates going for ex professionals, that has to show there's a certain degree of stress or mental pressure involved 0

I didn't say zero pressure, I just said it doesn't compare to real pressure like a war zone etc

A quick google search will most likely give you a list of names but this is quite a good article on it:

Most jobs allow you to go on stress leave. I suppose the realisation that you will never play test cricket again would be pretty stressful. Having a break is fine but he now needs to address his goals and be happy playing first class cricket for the rest of his career (e.g. Brad Hodge).

I'm shocked at the suicide stats.

Wow . Watching the sky commentators disect Compton's technique in the Sri Lanka series was like reading writing on the wall . He does need to fix a few things but I would have thought a few county games would be the best remedy . Must be gutted though , hes been in and out of the test side -must feel like he's been doing the hokey pokey .
