Title: Toby Richardson Original
Post by: bostoncricketer on August 17, 2016, 12:43:52 PM
Laver & Wood have their Toby Richardson Original profile in performance grade up on offer for the next 5 days. Does anyone have any experience with this shape? How would their performance grade stack up against Aldred butterfly or BB net bat?

The shape is very much along the lines of what Julian Millichamp used to make. I think the performance would be decent but will take a while to open up.

This offer attracted my eye. Anyone got an opinion on:
1) can they press it softer for quicker performance rather than than them opening up gradually
2) What is the middle characteristics of the original profile? responsive small middle. Are they wide?

Im a player that goes for his shots and just conscious that it might not have much if not exactly out the screws.
Any thoughts?

I wouldn't expect it to be at its best straight away whatever is said, I haven't had a laver yet that went out of the box irrespective of grade or instruction, but they are worth it in the long run, just us it as a net bat for a while and he presto. As to the profile I find it pretty forgiving though the big edge classic (certainly not big by current standards) is definitely a lot more forgiving.

Ive sent my specs in. Asking for a butterfly with retro stickers. Hopefully that is rejected. Impulse buy at its worst.

From whatever little I know, L&W grade their bats thus : Butterfly<Legend<Special Reserve<Private bin<Reserve<Signature.

The TR profile @$269 will be the Specical Reserve (still a grade 1 bat) and should (on paper atleast) stack up very well against any net bat, if not top bats.

The order of the grades is basically correct, but special reserve is grade 2. Signature is grade 1+ whatever that is, PB and reserve both grade one, and legend is grade 3. Butterfly is priced the same as the legend so considered the same level apart from select butterfly which is a good bit more, and pricey for butterfly.

As per the special reserve pics on their site, it could be anything including butterfly.

Our skipper uses a laver performance grade.

Here's his winter net video

https://youtu.be/ZQSTp0WQT-U (https://youtu.be/ZQSTp0WQT-U)

He bought it from me as a net bat, but it opened up so well after about 3 nets he has used it all season.

972 runs so far at a strike rate of 120 would suggest it's going well this year!!

would it be rude to ask for one with a straight spine?

Thats going like a rocket!

I ordered for me and a teammate yesterday. Eta 3 weeks to US.

I asked him if they could do a slight bow and he said bow reduces the size of the sweet spot. Went for a forward sent handle instead.

That's very interesting, did he elaborate as to how this happens? Is it different for each profile?

The argument is that if you PRESS in the bow, the middle is harder, and therefore less responsive.

Pretty certain they offer 2 special reserve grades: one is Grade 2, the other is entry-level Grade 1

I asked him if they could do a slight bow and he said bow reduces the size of the sweet spot. Went for a forward sent handle instead.

Andy said that? That is interesting!

A "pressed" bow leads to uneven press leaving part of the bat soft pressed and the bowed area _harder_ pressed compared to the softer pressed parts of the bat. Does that affect performance? In my opinion it doesn't. You can use a mallet on softer areas to harden them up. The harder pressed (bowed) part will ping nicely. No issue there, atleast not with bats I have and I always specify a BIG BOW in my bats.

GN Warner Replica bat has a massive bow. Mine is handmade by Stuart Krantzbuhler. It has _no_ soft areas on the bat and goes like a rocket. Also, my Aldred has a nice bow and no soft areas.

I believe the reason bat makers don't want to bow bats is because it is a labor intensive process, performance excuse is just nonsense!

Regarding bows, I would let the bat maker do what he is comfortable with. Generally in most things pushing people to do things against the grain whether right or wrong doesn't produce the best results.

^ A paying customer should be able to get what he/she wants since they are ones using the product and have _some_ idea of how/why they use it.

Point of having a custom made bat is to get what you pay for and want.
Title: Re: Toby Richardson Original
Post by: Bats_Galore on August 18, 2016, 05:27:44 PM
It isn't a question of that in my opinion, what I am saying is that if someone doesn't like putting in a bow as an example, either accept his advise as to what he is best at making, or find someone that does like to work in that way (putting in bows), as generally if people do not like doing something and are pushed into doing it the results suffer.
Title: Re: Toby Richardson Original

Yes, I agree. You can't force a bat maker to do something they are not able to do.

Id say the one in the photo above would be bottom heavy. My first Laver was the Toby profile (90s M&H) and it was amazing.

Its not a custom its a specific profile and grade and says handles and blade length are adjustable not bow. A customer paying full price can ask away.

A bloke on facebook asked them this morning for the TR special in a different profile and a discoumt for buying three. Everyone wants somesthing extra free for just turning up.

I was making a point in general about custom bats. This situation is different as you stated.

For this price and deal, Laver are willing to make a bat in SH length with an inch shorter blade and a longer handle in TR profile with a forward set handle for bow. For the price, I think it is a great deal. I am still contemplating the bat, I have too many to use in the first place.  :D

^ Because it is still a Laver & Wood bat conforming to their standards albeit made by an "apprentice". You should reach out to them via facebook and they will promptly answer your questions.

Laver has another ex-apprentice making some cracking bat out there under his own label now: Marty Graham of MG2 Cricket!

I did the video early this week.

Pickup is balanced and not as bottom heavy is it could be. it picks up it's weight 2.95 imo and is the net bat I want once my B3 is match ready and then my match bat for the first few games if I am not opening.

I want a bat a ounce heavier early on to balance out the fact the wickets are slow compared to our hard wicket nets. It all evens out by summer.

It is a lovely bit of craftsmanship and I messaged Laver and Wood a thank you for TR.

Excellent video mate. I saw a picture on L&W's FB page that a retro stickered bat was going to the northern territory - i guess that was your bat! My bat is on the way, will post pictures and a review shortly.

1 question  - how thin or thick is the handle at the bottom?

Bat has arrived.
If I knew it was going to be as good as it is, I think I would have shelled out for two.
I was very specific with the weight I wanted and the boys have deliver. Has a lot of willow where I hit it, I have always been a fan of the Jules Classic/MH/Scats profile but have often found them a little to heavy for my liking. however this right on 2'8, actually just a fraction under with no concaving, just under 70mm spine with scuff sheet and toe guard.
Shape of handle is great. I whole buying experience, communication freight etc was on point.
The only negative I could find would be I have purchase bats with a higher quality finish. The value of this bat was very difficult to resist and I'm glad I didn't

demanding lot aren't you! I don't even take photos of my kids So I had to sneak out the backyard otherwise the betterhalf would be mage a huge song and dance about it.
When I weigh bats I must normally place them on their edge, however due to the edge and spine this bat won't sit like that.Actually the edge and spine  kind of reminds me of a bit of the  flavour at the moment the XP70, funny how things can take a fully circle.

Mine arrived today after paying the custom charges. Here are a few pictures. I am impressed with it. Had to put another grip on as the handle was very thin. Weight is 2lb 9oz

I don't have many complaints with it. Middle feels nice I got Laver to knock it in. Will use it in a few nets and hopefully it'll open up nicely

Superb looking stick, reminds me of the old Mjolnir shape. Seems like Toby is doing well at Laver, shaping some excellent looking bats!

Anyone measured width? Mine maxed at 107mm near the toe. No big deal for me, but it was spotted by another purchaser.

Saw the one my teammate got today...didn't get a chance to measure it but that one looked narrow as well

Mine is around 103-104mm near the splice and gradually increases to about 106-107 near the toe.

I think is just a way to save weight and keep that profile as full as possible. I taped mine up again and the middle is so long and meaty and I love the natural feel of that handle. It's going to be a beast.

Thanks mate.. Friend got this TON direct from the SS factory and then got it signed by Yusuf Pathan. It is a LB, 2-10 with 20 grains.

Your asking about laver or SS?

Laver as usual has a distinct laver clunky noise. Extended middle and pings very well.

SS is something special performance wise.. I just started knocking it. It was from a pile made for a professional player. Friend got it stickered and toe guard fitted.

^ Laver.

Looks like a great deal from L&W but I don't need another bat. I am so tempted!

These are lovely profiled bats

Last two bats I've received have avoided any custom charges.

I think and I could be wrong here their prices on their website include postage to UK

So this offer is back on for a limited run, and L&W posted it about half an hour after my pay arrived in the bank and while I was on night shift...

...expect a bat review in a few weeks.

My one is going nicely. Doesn't have to be all big edges etc.Profile is a classic!

Arrived last week! 2lb11 on the nose, slightly LH, 70mm spine, absolutely zero concaving. Not very pretty for 'G1 performance' but does seem like a pinger on first impressions, middle is obviously quite long. Pretty happy with it, feels like it'll need a lot of playing in though.

Has anyone used similar bats in T20? How is this bat suited to lofted shots or aggressive play in general? Not expecting edges to go for sixes but shots which are middled.
