Title: Custom X1
Post by: Pilgrim on August 25, 2016, 03:45:21 PM
I recently contacted John about getting a bat made to the same shape as Joe Root's and I sent him a number of pictures and videos and basically pestered him for a week or so. I decided on X1 grade and he found a cleft and I indicated around 2lb 8oz/9oz weight.
That was a few weeks ago and now I have the bat in my possession. It has 8 really straight grains that run through the toe and up the back of the bat. The finishing is fantastic and I love the stickers and grip. Its shape looks pretty spot-on (although I guess we are never going to get it quite as big as Root's) and it feels really nice. It weighs 2lb 9 1/2oz. It has 39mm edges at its highest point, about a 60mm spine. The toe is 22mm at the bottom and the shoulder is 20mm. It has just the slightest bit of concaving - very full profile really. It is a slightly shorter blade and longer, oval handle.
As a comparison, a while ago I had a 2 stripe B3 done with a similar request and it weighs 2lb 8oz and has 34mm edges, 18mm toe and 10mm shoulder, with a slightly higher spine but definitely more concaving than the Red Ink.
I would highly recommend the experience and the resulting bat should be great (already knocked-in too). Many thanks to John.
I will update once I have used it but here are the pics for now:

You saw it in the process of being made did you?
I forgot the toe-up shot for a view of the lack of concaving. Here you go:

Basically the same proportions as the GM Mana. Not really noticeable until you are told about it.

The perfect weight would be 2.10 but it depends on what you could do.

2.10 is pushing it in with those kind of dimensions. A few tweaks and we could probably get close with the right cleft but would still be over I would guess.

Yeah that would be okay. With it being a mid swell the pick up would still be pretty light.

Exactly! You have a bat made exactly as you want it. And then you sell it. Crazy.

Must have a very very very good reason. Johns made me a couple of bats and no way I would part with them....reckon I'd flog the wife first...for another XI.

Like I say, there's one on ebay. How much do you want for your wife?

Just decided to sell it as have already bought a number of other bats for next season (when I won't be able to play as much as I thought!) and this one is a bit heavier than some of the other (H4L Fifty/50, Phantom Illusion). I have also not used this one at all yet so can sell as new, unlike some of my others.
It is obviously a great bat and so hope it goes to a good home. It was made to Joe Root profile, so not necessarily to my own specific requirements but was exactly what I requested. Still thoroughly recommend Red Ink, for the product and the experience.
