Title: GM 2017 7/9/16
Post by: Vitas Cricket on September 01, 2016, 05:28:44 PM
We are attending GMs launch event on Tuesday the 6th of September, followed by a meal and night out with the staff at GM, lovely.

I don't know for sure but going on previous years the catalogue will launch to the public the following day, Sept 7th.

It's a busy week next week with the Lords trade show on the 8th and 9th!

I'm sure this thread can be used to discuss the new range, we'll do our best to update with any imagery we are allowed to show, GM are usually pretty good at social media teasers too :)

I wish they could do events like facebook live etc and make the launch more public.

Usually a fun day out, have a great time. I hope they have made the top end softs lighter this year.

Saw on Twitter the L550/L540 hashtag. No idea what it means, but my guess would be that it could be shorter blade bats with a regular SH blade at just under 560mm long.

Gray Nicolls for 2016 do offer a LH option in every grade, but it does seem to be heading that way.

It's perhaps the start of an era where there isn't 1 standard bat length. Which I can only imagine makes it more difficult for those buying online.
Title: Re: GM 2017 7/9/16
Post by: Tom on September 06, 2016, 02:32:52 PM
My thoughts on the range:

A couple of years ago, when they had 2 sticker types I was pretty critical. Now, having moved to 1 style, I really like them. They're eyecatching, visible from afar and I love the black.

The various blade lengths I think may confuse a little, I notice they've ditched the variants of the face profiles which many discussed for the confusing nature last time. This, at least with their techie F550 terms, seems to be going down a similar route. Perhaps it could just be simplified? In simple terms they now have a standard blade, a couple of 1" shorter blades and then a T20 bat. Sounds simple when you put it like that. So many variations around these days. I'd imagine it's only a matter of time till we have large scale custom bats, the variations available seem to be moving in that direction and it's worked well in football with the likes of MiAdidas/NikeId.

Softs look great as always. The embossed sidewing a nice touch of class on the pads. Lastly, a wheelie duffle! I'm sure that'll do very well.

If only my previous GM bags hadn't both fallen apart in less than a season...  :(

Looks ok at first glance. Not a massive fan of the black background on the big GM decals and preferred this years Mana colours.

Glad they've gone back to simpler colours in the softs (Original / 808 pads and gloves) as should make it easier to 'mix and match' with the different colour bats in the range.  Sure they'll both be big sellers!

Nice slick branding this year.

I think GM have upped their game. Impressed from the SD sale GM bats also, some pride behind their grading.

Just do not like the shoes!

Got briefly excited and then where are the pockets..!

Fan of the new stickers, will stand out from all the copies of the original white ones now, keep the exciting colours but less mental than last year. Blade lengths I think are a good move, average consumer won't even notice after all. Shame there's nothing for the taller players out there though.

Just finished up at GM HQ seeing the range and meeting GM staff and fellow retailers alike. Now onto the bar, meal and night out!

GM do put more technical info into their catalogue and online then any other brand, so for those willing to delve into certain finer details, you can. The blade lengths are a little confusing at first, but well explained in their product information, and of course as long as you, the customer deal with a well informed, quality retailer (all of us attending today definitely are) then our understanding of the technicalities can be explained in a way that works for you :)

Personally I love the Neon range, and the Kaha is a brute!

The White/silver OLE 909 and 808 softs look superb, the new OLE WK glove is one of the best I've ever tried on, and I'm fussy when it comes to wk gloves

Bat pockets? There are two internal bat sleeves if that's what you were after.

Just general compartments, love duffles but if a bag hasn't got somewhere to put wash kit and all the assorted small bits you need to take to a game then it's a bit useless for match day use. Really hoping this year will be the year when a duffle comes that isn't just one big space with a couple of pockets and bat sleeves attached, wheelie duffles would be a nice option too.

The usual high standard of range you'd anticipate and expect from someone with the heritage of GM, good to see them continuing to innovate with designs throughout the range and impact materials as well.

Well done @Edward Lowy and the rest of the team, I'm sure many hours of hard work went into today's launch and hopefully it was well received.

Yup, all F4.5 this year. Remember that we started the F-Tech program a few years ago in order to explore face options. The vast majority of the demand has now settled at 4.5, hence our 2017 ranging.

Kind regards

Does this mark the death of mainstream brands LB/LH?

We still offer Long Handle in some models, but the reality is that the demand has only gone south in recent years. LB Pretty much a victim of the demand for bigger swells, you just can't sensibly market a LB Big Boy to any kind of volume.

Kind regards

Edward

Yeah but as the women's range is only available in that colourway, it leaves you open to ridicule from ignorant toßers as it is obviously a women's range. At least the purple mogul range was mens too so not as obvious.

Loving the simpler looking softs ranges, definitely the way to go in my opinion. Never been a huge GM person, but my interest has been awakened, good job guys!

The Kaha is about as far away from an Icon as it is possible to be. Low middle compared to the Icons high middle, with a big bulbous swell almost like a Zona compared to the long flowing spine of the Icon. The Paragon is closest to the Icon.

I find it surprising that only two bats have regular blade length in the entire range. In so much as the shorter blade lengths are advertised as helping greater bat speed etc, my personal experience is that shorter blade lengths and longer handles do not help a batsman in having control on shots apart from maybe helping in slog type shots. Also, short blade length bats do not give a batsman confidence in playing shorter straighter deliveries that rise high. In addition, despite being advertised as having better pickup, the pickup is worse as you hold the bat higher up the handle, so from physics, you need to apply greater force to move the bat the same amount compared to when you hold it closer to the blade, due to the lever effect...Lastly not to mention that those who are used to holding the bat closer to the blade will find it necessary to change their technique to hold the bat higher up with the shorter blade bats as otherwise they would risk being yorked... So all in all, find it really surprising that GM has gone massively in this direction..

Just my 2 cents from my experience with the kudos which is not even that much of a short blade but still a short blade bat..

Just following on from this, still having serious willow envy in the light of my retirement. I managed to acquire a beautiful example of the new range. Obviously a mana, based on last season's efforts before dispatching to a teammate. I am so in love with these stickers, originally didn't think that I would be but they look class with the blood orange colour contrasting against the black textured background of the main stickers  :o If you're a stickler for appearance of a brand, GM have made an absolute dream of a choice in colours and I'm sure whatever anyone chooses will look as class as these. But there's no existence of the bat without pictures, so please feast your eyes on this beaut.

I suppose, once you become willow addict, you WILL ALWAYS be a willow addict for life... Can't wait to see the other bats in the range  :D I'll do a full review once my brother gives it some use!

That is a stunning bat. From a hater of GM for so long I am suddenly very jealous.

What made you a GM hater? Sad to hear!

^ I don't do GM either. They are too hard pressed and take a long time to open up. A friend has a Six-6 Joe Root in light weight and no ping.

The GM 909 gloves with Joe Root thumb (small men's size) have poor to no ventilation although comfortable with great protection. I gave mine away because my hands would get sweaty after 10 overs. I switched to Newbery Club gloves which have very nice ventilation.

Oh, interesting to hear. We pioneered many years ago GM Now so that a bat is knocked in, ready to play straight away, as this is how we prepare pro bats. Thanks for the feedback.

Kind regards

Edward

There is a very simple solution for this... Don't bat for 10 overs! ;)

Just never liked the look or feel of them. Ive had a Purist growing up and then an Icon. Both were planks. Tried once more with a newer Icon and it split near the handle halfway through a season.

Just had a look at the 2017 gear and seen the price of the GM Paragon Player edition... $1300 aud... WTF?????

Pricing on bats this season here in Australia is out of control.... Glad I bought a B3 at 50% off when I did

And what the hell does " bat performance through science reality" mean?

Back in 1990 I bought the most expensive bat at the time which was a GN Elite Limited Editon and that cost me $350 aud ( because David Boon used one). With inflation that converts to $660 aud in 2016...

I'm still gob smacked!!!

This caught my eye. I own shorter blade bats and have also seen some in action. I have not heard any noise about balance or ability to play straight, rising balls. All I have seen are big hits and big scores. :) Regarding SH bats with shorter blade, I can understand the issue of balance but I think it would become prominent in cases of heavier bats, anything over 2-9. But that can be easily remedied with a counter-balance in the handle. I suspect which is why H4L Warbird has a counter-balance in the handle. I regularly use a rolled-up second grip as a counter balance in my bottom heavy bats. It works.

I am sure the success of GM Mana has something to do with more investment in shorter blades.

Next season the Warbird or Blitz will make way for a new GM blade, my first real bat was a GM as my favorite player as a kid was Derek Randall. Had a Sigma in 2015 which they sadly discontinued, teammate with more skill pleaded to buy it.

Is it possible to get a neon 606 in under 2.9?
