Title: Winter nets kit
Post by: Bats_Galore on September 11, 2016, 09:00:57 AM
With the season all but over, and the winter nets looming, ours start in a couple of weeks. I wanted to collect some thoughts on kit for winter nets. There may well be other questions but to start;
What balls would people recommend from experience, I suppose my quandary is finding something decent, to not destroy the bats, durable, and relatively modestly priced.
Shoes are a quandary, not found a decent non spiked shoe, the studs that replaced spikes are often skiddy on the hard cour style surface we net on. I tend to end up using trainers and pray not to get a Yorker on the toe.
Finally the bat. Given indoor surfaces are typically quicker than turf wickets, would the use of a lighter bat be advantageous.

Balls wise I can recommend tiflex. Been trialing their balls over the season, and they retain shape and hardness for a good while without destroying bats. Also shines and swing for a good while. Speaking of the Windsor model, retailing at 12-15£. The magna does the same, just last about half the time.

You'll feel the benefit of cricket turf shoes.

Bit more expensive than typical trainers but most come with a toe box and extra padding to help planting the front foot.

End of season sales have started so you should be able to pick some up cheap.

As a batter, I'm not that well versed in which balls are best.

Apologies if I've misunderstood the post, but, where are you getting the Tiflex for 12-15 gbp?

Edit: Should have said too... great thread, looking forward to finding some gems for the winter nets

Right, retail might be the wrong word.. From tiflex direct via Nathan. Don't know if this is still the price, but that's what I was informed. Ofc that might be on 6+ orders only, as I went for 18 magna and 6 Windsor for testing.

Do you have an amazing email address for him? Many thanks. I will definitely give them a try. As to colour any thoughts for indoor nets

What do you mean by cricket turf shoes? Would you have an example?

Things like Nike's Lunar Potential, Adidas' Howzat et all. For all intents and purposes, they are trainers, but they're designed for cricket so have toe boxes and cushioning in heel.

Doesn't your club give you left over/used league balls. The members own them in any case.

I have 5 x pink Tiflex/Oxbridge balls that will shortly be going in the For Sale section, so keep your eyes peeled.

I want to have all the balls of the same age for the nets as the specific nets we use bounce quite differently according to the age of the ball (in terms of usage). It turns out Vitas sell the triflex in red and pink so have ordered a box of each. A pleasure to deal with as always.

I will get a post up tonight bud. 5 in total. They have 'school competition' branding on one side seeing as they were made for the comp, but obviously that is not an issue.

Not an issue at all mate, I've used the pink schools t20 ones plenty since year 12, plus a few times at uni. If they do a job in a sidearm and are easier to see indoors than red (something I find trouble with sometimes) then I'm not fussed at all.

Oh, and you're not the only one who struggles to pick the red ball up in nets! These balls have amazing longevity as well. Surprised me to be honest!

Either that or something very similar, what are you looking to use it for? They're designed for use in the Aussie style indoor where you bat without pads or lids, so quite a bit softer and lighter than a real cricket ball.

Ahh ok i was going to use it in a proper net, instead of using a proper ball, in hope it doesn't skid on as quickly like a proper wicket?

Not really I afraid, they go through pretty quick when new, bit more realistic off the pitch when they're older but that's mainly because they rough up so much and go slowly through the air too

How much were the boxes?
